For those of you don't know, there is currently a #Kickstarter for #Pixelfed (an alternative to #Instagram ) and #Loops (a possible replacement for #TikTok ). And it looks like it will reach its funding goal on its very first day.
I was one of the first backers and pledged a significant amount. Why?
Well, I've ranted often enough about how corporate social media has now essentially become a massive tool for promoting #fascism around the world - #X is of course the biggest offender, but #Facebook and #Meta have recently made their allegiances clear. More clear, that is.
And we need to replace them if free, democratic societies are going to have a future in the medium term. There is much at stake - fascists don't care about #ClimateChange or any of the other major threats to human civilization (indeed, they are part of them).
So yes, I will put my money where my mouth is and support this. The #Fediverse is bigger than #Mastodon alone, and we need a healthy range of popular, well-supported apps and systems. And this is part of that.
Sure, even with the extra funding the people behind the Kickstarter might not reach their goals (and lofty goals there are). But at the very least it should push the Fediverse forward, increase our user base, and give us more spotlight in the news.
There will probably mistakes along the way, but we and other Fediverse developers can learn from them further. So to my mind, it's better to take a gamble on this than be content with what we have now.

Unlike many others, I have decided _not_ to leave #Facebook for the time being...
...because I want to tell the people back there about the #Fediverse . Seriously, there are plenty of people who haven't even heard of Mastodon, Pixelfed, and all the others, and are receptive to the idea. And now that Meta is doubling down on Enshittification in such a drastic way, this is a good time for recruitment.

Does anyone have any experiences with successfully connecting #Fediverse apps with Brid.gy _other_ than #Mastodon and Bookwyrm? I tried but failed to connect my #Pixelfed account earlier, so I am curious about any other possibilities.
I am all for using this possibility, if only to show the fine folks at #Bluesky that we have a rich ecosystem of different apps over here. 😉

In other news, in our #WFRP campaign we have just entered Middenheim and the "Power behind the Throne" adventure.
Our elven wizard is a bit miffed that she had to pay 17.2 gold pieces for the privilege of entering the city. But my ex-Cavalryman/ ex-Riverwarden/Soldier _did_ manage to smuggle her books about forbidden Chaos lore into the city for her, so it could have been so much worse.
We've found a place to stay, and since my character has to learn a music instrument to complete the first career level, he is going to buy a fife, practice with it, and see if he can connect with some local party people.
Also, we want to root out some local Chaos cult which is undoubtedly up to no good, but isn't this always the case?

@nprofile…m680 Well, the US news media _have_ been pretty good at creating a narrative at being the indispensable "Fourth Estate" that is a guarantee for freedom and democracy - far out of proportion of what they have _actually_ done for these causes (not unlike the USA as a whole...).

My early impression of #Loops is... well, discoverability is pretty much absent. You can only search for user names, and for that you'd need to know which users are relevant to your interests in the first place. Apart from that, videos tend to show up strictly as global timeline, and that makes them pretty random.
I assume that there will be more and better options down the road, but right now it is what it is.

#WritersCoffeeClub 01/19—Did you find a way through the maze of traditional publishing to get your book published? What’s your secret?
No, I went the self-publishing route from the start.
For one thing, I didn't want to get any flashbacks to my job hunt days where I received rejection letter after rejection letter. Why subject myself to that if I can avoid it?
For another, working with traditional publishers means deadlines - and I get enough of those at my day job, thanks.
Finally, publishers tend to insist on annoying things like "exclusive publishing rights", which runs counter to my goal of releasing my translations under a Creative Commons Zero license.
Mind you, I am not ruling out working with a traditional publisher if my works get translated into further languages. But for the time being, I focus on self-publishing.

In other news, I am currently translating some rather dodgy Bavarian folk tales about toads.
Apparently, one of the Bavarian names for toads was "Bärmutter" - which is an earlier term for "Gebärmutter", or uterus.
And these folk tales imagine the "Bärmutter" as living animals that lived within the human body - and if the humans fell ill, they would sometimes emerge from the person's mouth while their host was asleep, wash themselves, and go back into the body the same way. And after they had washed themselves, their hosts would be cured.
In one tale, the toad is described as emerging while the "ligaments of the uterus" are still hanging from it!

When I did my PhD, back in the day, I was given a "half position". The official explanation was that we would work 20 hours per week for the university (teaching, writing papers, project proposals, and so forth) - that was the half that was getting paid - and 20 hours per week on our PhD, which was the unpaid part.
In actual practice, the ratio was more like 40-10.

@nprofile…lqlv That's still a non-trivial amount of money for a lot of people, however.
Sure, a lot of tech people in the developed world can afford this. But I suspect this is one of the major barriers to entry into the #Fediverse for people in developing countries
The Fediverse is far more centered on the developed world than #Twitter or #Facebook were. And that lack of representation from developing countries hurts us.
The revolution needs to go global if it is to succeed.

Some questions I've seen on an online forum about #Pixelfed :
- What are the motivations for setting up community servers, given that these are presumably significantly more resource-intensive than Mastodon instances?
- Are there any Pixelfed instances dedicated to #ttrpg gamers, similar to dice.camp?

I've ranted before how we need to expand the #Fediverse in order to replace the #fascism - promoting machine that is corporate social media (and maybe help save human civilization in the process), and currently, everyone joining, using, and promoting #Pixelfed seems like a great opportunity.
A lot of people didn't take kindly to #Zuckerberg kissing #Trump 's ring, and we have an opportunity to both hurt him and boost the Fediverse. While quite a few people are leaving #Facebook over this, this platform has had too many years making it indispensable for people maintaining connections with each other, and for them to extract themselves from this Moloch will take a lot of time and effort.
But #Instagram , a site that is less about maintaining connections with other people than about sharing cool pictures and short-lived trends, is far more vulnerable. Yes, there are some big-time "influencers" who will be loathe to move to a smaller platform. But of the 2 billion users or so that Instagram has, I'd wager that a lot of them don't have the same attachment to the platform that Facebook users have.
So let's do our part to make Pixelfed an alternative worth migrating to. It is fortunate that they released an official app recently, which gives the system some further news buzz. But what we really need is to make the platform come alive - which means registering, posting our cool pictures, and sharing those of others. Let's see how many Instagram users we can convince to follow.
This is also our opportunity to show that the Fediverse is more than just #Mastodon . Sure, Mastodon was the important pioneer that got the Fediverse its first global attention. But right now, Pixelfed gives us the opportunity that we are part of a large interconnected ecosystem free of corporate manipulation - so let's not waste this opportunity!

@nprofile…jgcn There _are_ companies where senior management recognizes that long-term employees with lots of institutional knowledge are vitally important, and want to keep them as long as possible. I work for one such company, for instance.

2025-01-15 16:28:02 UTC

Let's remember:
If a company fires the "lowest performers" according to some dodgy metrics, then the second-best strategy for employees is to sabotage their co-workers so that they drop beneath them in the rankings.
The _best_ strategy is, of course, to find a place of work that isn't a complete and utter shithole.

I see the right to leave spaces you are not comfortable in to be pretty fundamental. And people who _insist_ that their voices should be heard by everyone are deeply suspect to me. Especially since they usually want to drown others out.
