Hungarian elections are in the news around the world. This is highly unusual, so here's an informative video about the sad state of my homeland. Insane indeed. https://inv.nadeko.net/XTp45qKCYRw

If you really want to hurt a snail, you may be able to break its mantle (never seen it actually happen), but the crack on the foot looks ridiculous.
Tangential fun fact: snails intentionally stab each other during mating. Look up "love dart"!

As a biologist, I call bullshit. The anatomy is correct, but I've never seen a snail getting injured by lifting it off the ground. It's not like a suction pad. The only place where it *might* happen is a very smooth, artificial surface, like a window. But there, you'll feel the resistance, and won't rip it off. Also, usually they retreat quite fast when in danger, you don't need half a minute for that.

I've heard an HR professional openly say that they no longer read cover letters. AI has become so pervasive that they are basically neatly written garbage, and all look the same.
So we arrived at the point where we spend time, money and energy to produce something that nobody will ever read. This is a pattern that will spread beyond cover letters, I reckon. Interesting times ahead.

Category theory for programmers is a gem, and my favourite online lecture series ever. It made me a lot better programmer. Every second of it is gold despite the bad sound quality... And now I've found out that somebody denoised the video and shared it on Peertube.

I was just thinking the same. **IF** (that's a big if) people ever realise that they don't need the digital "services" provided by the US-based companies, what's left? Some things for sure; it's not nothing, but most of US economy would be gone.

Wooow, small world! I lived in that area around 2012. It has changed a lot since then. Awesome photos, thanks!

I'm preparing a NixOS config for a new computer. It blows my mind (once again) that you can test and polish your config in a VM, so that when your computer arrives you just import the hardware-config, and boom, you're good to go! In theory. But for me, theory ≅ practice with #nixos so far.

I used gemma3 and codegemma. But my card has only 8gb ram, so that could be the issue. Writing doc was also a disaster for me, it totally misunderstood what the code was doing

I think I might just remove the bullshit machine from my computer. I wasted a lot of time setting it up, tryint to prompt it well, and it gave me useful answers twice so far.
LLM-s on consumer hardware are useless. And I am not going to pay a lot of money to a provider to be fed bullshit that is a lot harder to detect. So that's the end of my LLM journey for now.

Looking for AWS batch alternatives to run nextflow pipelines. European providers are preferred. HTcondor looks promising, but probably takes quite some time to set up on a cloud provider. Does anyone on fedi know a good one? #bioinformatics #cloud

I wasn't going to bring it up, but now that you mention it... :D
More seriously: somebody was talking about Tumbleweed in the context of NixOS, and probably that's what made me think that it was a declarative one as well. maybe it's just a rolling release then?

Ah, that's not a declarative distro?

`tar xf` works for both uncompressed and gzipped. You're welcome. I never use bz2 anymore, so not sure about that one

Does it smell like FASTQ in here? :-) I too used awk for that

Very true. What we*do* know for sure is that the path leading up to death sucks big time. Unless it's super quick.

I've just switched from Gogs to Forgejo on my local server. Thanks to #nixos it took me very little time to set it up, as all the configs have the same syntax, and packagers did a great job enabling all the necessary options.
Forgejo looks super mature, and migrating my repos was a breeze. it can even migrate issues, wikis etc. from a number of git hosting solutions, including the less popular ones (like Gogs). So far, the user experience is vastly improved. Happy Sunday!

That's all totally cool, I guess you are still allowed to btw if you use Arch.
Are there any bioinformatics software missing from nixpkgs? Just asking bcz I'm happy to try and package it... depending on the complexity ;-)

Today we had a "bored afternoon" with my four year old son. The rest of the family was sleeping, and we played with a broken folding rule. The game somehow got invented, I don't know if it was him or me; perhaps together. It was just five straight sides that you could fold in any shape, and the other one had to guess what it was. Amazing how children can enjoy these creative games <3 Best bonding moment ever. #parenting
