I'm looking for "dumb phone" recommendations.
Must-haves:
- No internet
- MP3 player (ideally lossless hi-res with FLAC support)
- No pre-installed Meta/Google/Microsoft/Amazon apps
- Bluetooth 5.0+
- USB-C
- Flashlight
- Calendar
- Calculator
- Basic camera (quality not important)
- No ads (looking at you, KaiOS)
I searched online but couldn’t find anything that meets the above criteria. Nokia 5310 (2024) is close, but it comes with root Facebook (😖), with no possibility to uninstall.

I admire the German Deutsche Bahn method:
1. Buy and run four private train companies in the UK, including London Overground and the Grand Central line.
2. Charge Brits up to £2 per mile.
3. Use profits made in the UK to subsidise German train tickets (49€ per month, unlimited travel).
At least one nation has benefited from Thatcher’s privatisation.

I also had many tests done during those six years.
Again, it took the specialist less than a minute to dismiss all previous diagnoses based on my test results.
The problem in my case was that none of the GPs had enough knowledge to interpret my results correctly.
Unfortunately, many of the GPs I interacted with were too arrogant to listen to me when I told them I disagreed with their diagnosis. One, in a very patronizing way, laughed me off.

This policy has been introduced to save money or reduce waiting lists, not because it’s what is best for patients.
Anecdotal experience: In my local practice, three different GPs on four different occasions “googled” my symptoms. It took over six years to finally be referred to a specialist, who correctly diagnosed me after one minute, compared to six years of incorrect diagnoses and a series of unnecessary antibiotics and steroids.

When we teach children that there are magical beings in the sky and that kid’s leukaemia is the result of a rib-clone eating an apple from a talking snake, we shouldn’t be surprised to learn that later in life they fail to grasp basic biology.

Billions of people will die. Whole species will cease to exist. Yet the only language these people can speak is the economy, mortgages, investments, efficiency, and growth.
The sentence “Climate crisis will destroy capitalism” is on par with claiming that “liver failure will destroy one’s alcoholism.”
Money is our poison. Not fossil fuels, not climate change. Money. This Guardian article is written from the perspective of a (money) addict.

A sentence I never thought I’d say:
Roy Mackal's 1970s Instamatic camera tangled in Boaty McBoatface's propellers.

If you read one book per day, it will amount to 36,500 books in a century.
There are millions, if not billions, of books out there.
Choose wisely.

By this time next year, I hope to run my own server with my website, email, private Mastodon and Pixelfed instances, and private cloud storage.
I would like to do this the correct (secure and private) way and was hoping someone could share links to good educational resources (I don’t mind paying if it’s worth it). Online searches are getting worse, and I’m struggling to find detailed yet digestible courses/tutorials.
Not an expert, not a total beginner either.
I don’t watch YT
TIA

ID card is not a proof of Health Insurance.
You can get your EU Health Card from your health insurer (state or private, depending on which country you’re from).
It is possible to have an ID and not have health insurance.

For the next week, I will be posting pictures of cormorants – one per day – in this thread.
All of these photos are local to me, captured during my dog walks.
I may include facts about the species, the story behind the picture, or a quote from Carl Sagan.
Follow #CormorantWeek if you’re interested, and feel free to mute if you’re not.
More info in ALT.

Reading the article below about the spread of the Nazi movement across Europe in the past 20 years, I can’t help but think that implementing Universal Basic Income is a simple solution to the rise of the Far Right.

When my son was 10, he gave me a card for my birthday.
In it, apart from the usual wishes, was a hand-written link to a YouTube video. 40-odd characters with random letters and numbers, carefully calligraphed by a 10 year old.
It took me 3 attempts to land at the correct page.
I got rickrolled.

Who gave this man permission to destroy the only planet which can sustain human life?
When did we all hold a meeting and agreed that a giant mega constellation of junk in lower orbit with zero oversight, zero regulation and zero accountability is what majority of humans want?
Btw, some another obscenely rich white dude is just about to start Deep Sea Mining.
