From one old-guy to another...I usually create the problems for myself that I then end up having to solve. Keeps me busy and always learning!

Aaron might know a thing or two about Ubuntu, I'd probably try his approach first

Little less of a battle-axe approach 🤣
I never found much use for the snap store, just rather run the app natively... And install everything from CLI anyways. Guess that's the old guy in me 😂

You could definately run the server from CLI, and remove the desktop. snap is only brought in with the desktop...part of the 'bloat'. Cockpit installed will give u a web frontend to manage your server and resource use would go WAY down.

Check if you have any snap packages installed first:
snap list
Remove snap packages by name ex:
sudo snap remove spotify
once all packages are cleared out
then remove cache and snap:
sudo rm -rf /var/cache/snapd/
sudo apt autoremove --purge snapd
you might also want to hold that package so it doesnt accidentally reinstall:
sudo apt-mark hold snapd
Some of that is described here and you can reinstall some things it might have taken away...

You can also remove snap store if you aren't explicitly using it for something. Its not really required as far as I know, especially as far back as ubu20. Seems to create more complications than needed.

if i could just ask here...is there a way to have oled deep black for the whole theme? The black seems to just work on popouts & informational windows, not the entire background for me. Or am I just doing something wrong?

so if it was previously installed it will continue getting updates maybe? Or maybe if you pay for it?

+1 for forgejo. I self host it and access via tailscale when I'm not at home. Pretty rocksolid IMHO...hosted gitea before that and its pretty easy to migrate to.

so much easier to script, troubleshoot and identify what's being loaded. Rumors are that Debian is going to do some work on their implementation (which i've also used - NOT devuan) and that could be good, it was a little buggy and pushed me to #gentoo Did you ever try the Debian openRC init? I had it running with Forky and its my backup OS when/if I tank my gentoo on the laptop.

I went to #gentoo on the lappy and desktop (mini-pc). Its been good on the laptop and a little buggy on the desktop. I may give alpine another run. OpenRC is pretty solid either way...

how do you like alpine? Is this on a desktop?

Gentoo elogin update seems to be breaking KDE login (or sddm login). Drops to a flashing unresponsive screen. Happy to be able to restore with timeshift, but had to block (mask) elogind updates for now. I was only upgrading 2 packages, that and kernel 7.0.6, and its not the kernel.

rolling with gentoo (openRC) currently. Devuan is a little limiting imho, especially since you can get Debian running with openRC just fine, its just a little quirky and requires some manual init.d file fabrication. Artix has some similarities with devuan in that u are limited to smaller repos (Debian has over 70,000 pkgs available, and arch probably more if you include AUR).
I miss pacman, but gentoo is proving pretty robust! Just a PITA to install.
I'd love something that combines the best of all of em! 😆 Is that too much to ask?!

I mean yeah. But I have nil for programming skills. Mine as well make it init system agnostic. Free the boot free the mind. Systemd is far to corporate these days. I got lots of other good ideas, but just dont know how to get others on board.
