"I shouldn't have to be decent, you should be tough" is such a meaningful measure of a human.
You don't have to. That's the entire premise. Your body doesn't force you to be kind in order to keep you alive. It's optional. You can choose to be decent and respected or not and not.
No one is holding a gun to your head ordering you to be likable.

Imagine being a young singer in 2010, going to a music school and having them spend more than half the class time on responsible use of autotune.
You tell them you're not singing into microphones at all right now and you don't have a computer, you actually want to learn about scales, reading music, warm-ups, how to engage the diaphragm, voice box anatomy and building out a repertoire.
They tell you that before any of that you must learn how to use autotune properly and how not to use it, otherwise you'll be left behind.
All the exams are primarily testing that you're not using autotune to 'cheat'. You're not sure what you would use it to cheat at or what other thing you should be doing, because the only thing you've been shown how to do is interact with autotune. None of the teachers seem to know how autotune fits into singing, but they know it's equally naughty for students to use it and to refuse to use it.
This is what uni in 2026 is like.

@nprofile…hm63 @nprofile…wccv @nprofile…a2ht reminds me of the pilot episode of Jonathan Creek.
The two lead characters meet, he's working in magic shows, she's an investigative journalist and she's super interested how he designs tricks. She absolutely insists he does one in the restaurant at lunch a few hours later and then insists she shows him how it was done.
He does it, it's magical, tells her she'll hate the explanation, but she insists. The explanation is that she was obviously likely to make this request, so when they arrived he set up the restaurant staff to do the trick for a cash tip, using props he handed them that he had made for the trick a few hours earlier.

I've been learning about this as one of many common hospital pharmaceuticals. Some interesting things I've picked up that could be useful to others. This is all stuff I've been taught in the last week, so take it with a grain of student.
-it doesn't vape, it doesn't smoke. There are consistent rumours of cannabis and more recent rumours of vapes being laced with this. The temperature at which it vaporises is significantly higher than an ordinary flame, so it would just end up as bong scum.
-there are skin patches, but otherwise it won't just randomly be absorbed into your skin in any significant way. You will not be harmed by giving breathing support to someone who has had it in their mouth. Being near it will neither harm you nor give you a buzz. It only makes US cops faint because they've given themselves a complex about it.
-it's vastly cheaper to produce than the things it's being sold as. People who take it in the community generally believe they are taking something else. This is certainly not the most common way to encounter it through, it's the standard of care for some situations and it's common in hospitals. What's rare is encountering someone who has taken it themselves on purpose.
-in a hospital it's given IV or applied to mucus membranes. These are the places it's generally hidden in the elicit drug supply: in stuff that's injected or goes up the nose. It doesn't work well when taken orally, but does turn up there too. In this case they sometimes look like a prescription pharmaceuticals but are not (this is a whole thing I didn't know about, not party pills that look like purple love hearts and are obviously elicit, but I Can't Believe It's Not [the psych drug you need that isn't covered by your insurance, probably] tablets)
-therapeutic doses are tiny, the quality at which it becomes dangerous is also very small. This means a person could take a perfectly reasonable quantity of *something* [eg one pill, 'a bump'] and enough fentanyl to be a problem could be hidden in it.
-can cause respiratory depression, where a person breathes so slow and shallow that they can stop altogether or suffer from low oxygen. This person will become unresponsive and look pale or blue-ish. Call an ambulance immediately. If they stop breathing, breathe for them. If you have naloxone, do what you're trained to do with it, you won't harm someone by trying this.
-get some naloxone. Opiates overall are pretty common and it's an easy way to save a life. Many people who are on opiates/opioids have never taken them before and won't again for a decade or two, because that's what they're great for: a short period during a new medical issue. This does mean that a lot of the people who are taking it at any given time are unfamiliar with it, didn't expect to be taking it, didn't have time to do a deep dive on it. Plenty of naloxone and training in the community helps keep everyone safe.

Several comments along the general lines of "the fedi likes consuming celebrity content if the celebrity is cool about it". This would be logical and I can see why people would think this.
If you have tried this and found this to be the case with your content and your stage name, I love that for you.
I have found the opposite. The thing I produce and its associated stage name has 25k followers on another platform. People on the fedi seem to quite like me [producer of hot takes about farts] but no one is having a bar of me [producer of hot takes about farts who also sometimes shares polished professional stuff for free]. It just fucks up the vibe. We're not here for that, we're here for the farts and I respect that.

But of course this is not what's meant by "engagement". Much like "agency", this means something totally different in the tech world. Engaging does nothing for your "engagement".

Accounts that claim there's no engagement on the fedi are, in my experience, some of the only accounts not engaging. The only ones not getting in other people's comments with similar interests and just shooting the shit with no other agenda.
You cannot go to a jamboree, sit around your own fire and complain that no other scout troops are coming by to hear your guitar. Your troop has to go to everyone else's fires, listen to their stories, sing along with their songs and of course answer enquiries about whether you can play Teenage Dirtbag.

This is what I mean when I say the fedi is a series of kitchen tables. Not a form of email, not a world of islands, just a lot of kitchen tables.
Everyone is happy to see someone rock up to the kitchen table with a bunch of cat pics, a recipe and a silly question.
No one wants someone turning up to the barbecue with a professional portrait of oneself with cat, a series of YouTube links to polished videos of yourself presenting recipes and constantly questioning why these are not getting enough attention.

I keep hearing "mastodon isn't good for [type of celebrity], they have to go to [other platform] for engagement"
It's not the celebrity type [scicom personality, journalist, author] it's the attempt to run a celebrity account at all that doesn't work on the fedi.
There are heaps of well known people on the fedi. Either it's not obvious that's their day job or they're just quietly being that in among posts about walking their dog. Coming to the fedi trying to sell your day job and hoping people will 'engage' is odd. Like going to the playground or the museum and being mad that bystanders didn't engage your about your day job despite the sandwich board you're wearing and your refusal to talk about any other topic.
Going into a social environment broadcasting [📢this is my content, engage with it📢] is an obvious recipe for disappointment. No one cares about the things you're broadcasting. Show us your dog. Did they have a nice walk?

- it is always worth getting warm for an hour or two every 24 hours. It may feel like if you've uncomfortable for a while there's not much point taking a break only to go back to the cold. The opposite is true. Effects of cold are cumulative. It's worth going out of your way to warm up at least once a day.
- setting up a small tent inside a room can keep the people and pets inside warm

To put it another way, making you coffee is not "entry level work". It's work.
Take your wage, divide it by how long it takes to create a latte in a paper cup with a little compostable lid. That's what everyone else's labour was actually worth.

2025-11-20 21:00:17 UTC

Hot take: there's no such thing as "entry level jobs". It's not a useful concept. It refers to:
- bachelor/diploma/apprenticeship + 3 years industry experience
- any low paid customer service job*
- all low paid admin jobs*
- anything where only an underage partial-wage is on offer, even if it's not an entry to any industry or role
- any service work*
- literally any job people see done, feel must be relatively simple, can imagine doing for a little while in college but can't imagine themselves having to do long term
*even if mostly filled by middle aged and older people whose 40h/week job is their side gig (parents, artists, farmers, students, carers).

Here's a very fedi question...
There are heaps of Ye Poor Of Wealthy England (Lay Ye Masters Low) type songs out there from the 18th and 19th century. The lyrics are preserved for many of them because they were printed in radical newspapers (including in australia), but the tunes are mostly lost.
Most of them are probably set to standard folk tunes. The one mentioned above is set to the tune of Ye Mariners of England. It was noted at the time.
Can you match any other historical radical worker songs to their folk tune so they can be sung now?

I don't remember details of this. Folks who studied psych, if you remember this case, please link the real details.
Decades ago, well before sophisticated chat bots, someone set up a computer program to take a text input then give one of a very short list of generic answers like "tell me more" or "I see, that's interesting".
This was framed as a virtual therapist and people (study participants?) were encouraged to engage with it about their mental health. I believe all participants knew it was a generic phrase generator.
Even with the simple repetitive nature of the phrase generator and the knowledge that's what it is, participants wanted to keep using it as a therapist.
I'm fuzzy on details obviously, but I think participants started reporting the program seems to understand them, show them kindness, have empathy.

Reasons farmers have given me for wanting to retire to The Simple Life (office work):
- number one reason, by a massive margin "my back is fucked"
- you can be inside out of the sun and in aircon. Not just at dinner time but *all the time*
- you can sit down and it's not a break, it counts as work
- very few things in an office can remove a finger
- dangerous work equipment such as firearms do not need to be stored on the same premises where your children live
- you're probably not going to do directly responsible for the welfare of thousands of animals
- if the business goes under, you are free to find a new job. Your family is not forced to live in the physical remains of the failed business
- even if the business you work for can't achieve its goals, there generally won't be a large scale animal euthanasia (or plant death) around your home
- you get paid every month, not once a year. Often your wage is set, or sometimes it's related to how much work you do. Your wage doesn't fluctuate wildly according to rainfall, demand, etc.
- office work involves other humans
- very few low paid office workers have to buy and mortgage their workspace in an increasingly abusive financial system which leads them into deeper and deeper debt in order to continue working the same... Desk

In light of the ongoing financial crisis I will be selling some islands. Preferably real because the source material is easier to find and follow, although I am also open to selling imaginary islands including all the discworld continents and australia.
I could definitely organise a reef, atoll, coastline or archipelago if that's more your speed.
- watercolour painting on A5 premium 200gsm watercolour paper
- uses premium lightfast pigments (tbh this technology still has limits, lightfast is never lightfast, don't trust it)
- surface sealed
- will be pressed nice and flat before sending, they're never totally flat because watercolour, but they're normally a lot flatter than this
- available in australia and NZ, if you're somewhere else and you want one, hit me up and we'll see if that's an easy thing to organise (it's probably fine)
- I can do a few a month depending on other commitments, I'll run it as commission slots if this ends up being wildly popular, otherwise I'll just give you a lead time
AUD$100, for one like one of these ⤵️ with any island or coastline of your choice.
If you want something either more simple or more substantial, I'm open to discussion.

I've decided to replace "spoiling the child" with "instiling entitlement".
I previously had simply stopped saying "spoiled", because it doesn't seem to exist. You can't treat a child too well. You can't love them too much. You cannot give them too much education, experience, fun or joy. It's simply impossible. But you can instill entitlement.
You can instill entitlement to cut lines, pinch down, hog space and take more treats than the person beside you.
You can also instill entitlement to walk away, say no, hold boundaries, be treated reasonably and be free from violence.

It's so wild the way TechBros always point to medical care as the reason consent is impractical in the real world.
1. You are not providing care, selling your tech is not a life or death emergency
2. It's well acknowledged in medical ethics and medical training that best practice is to seek full informed consent from every patient in every circumstance where that is possible
3. Patients have the right to refuse life saving medical care. Medical professionals and hospitals provide provision for life saving care to be refused and for that right to be respected. If doctors, nurses [all medical/hospital staff] can work with the practical implications of right to refuse life saving care, I think corporations can cope with the practicalities of a [NO] button. They just don't want to.

2025-04-13 23:29:58 UTC

- reply

I reckon this is intentional. By placing massive friction around exercising consent, you make any worker who understands consent seem like a source of friction in the workplace.
It takes a worker who understands consent 10x as long to do anything in tech compared with a worker who simply taps [ALLOW] every time.
This effectively purges workplaces of any workers who assert their own right to privacy, have any boundaries or are generally in the habit of standing up for themselves.

2025-04-13 23:18:01 UTC

We don't talk anywhere near enough about how the tech industry is fucking with the general public's understanding of consent.
Fairly often I will opt out of something that would have been obviously reasonable a few years ago, and people will look at me like I drove a truck through the room.
Things like:
- I won't be appearing on camera today
- I don't wish to speak on a recording to be published on the University website
- I won't be giving my personal details to an overseas third party just to use a notepad tool in one meeting
I see this seeping through into attitudes about consent in other everyday life contexts. People are so used to being walked all over by their tech that they're increasingly shocked by boundaries.

As you all probably know, my parents weren't anti-vaxxers, they were unschoolers, but as you will also know if you've been around here a while, it's the exact same cult.
I just saw a toot saying only more dead kids will stop them.
The opposite is true.
More dead kids always makes them more determined.
The more kids they kill, the more firmly they commit to being off the rails and never coming back. If they came back to reality before doing major damage, there would be some responsibility for past actions to take on.
If they come back to reality after killing a child, it's too much responsibility to return to. Once they've killed someone, they have to keep running forever. Reality can never be allowed to catch up to them once they're responsible for a death.

If you live in a place where chickens are comfortable in the climate year round, you already have running water through a nearby paddock, you have a place to put the waste and you have plenty of excess scrap fruit/veg being produced on site, then chickens are probably free. In fact they are unpaid workers. Maybe they pay you.
If you live in an apartment, all those ecological services (temperature control, water provision, waste disposal) are provided by you/the grid and a chicken becomes extremely expensive.
In suberbia, small towns and rural fringes it's much harder to decide if it's economical, because you have a mix of ecological services and human provisioning.

Most of the driving I do is around country back roads, farms, fire access roads or in the 40km zone of the town. I would normally only take the car above 50km/h if I'm taking a road trip to a city.
A lot of the time my car is travelling slower than a bike. I could definitely travel safely with no seatbelt in some of these cases.
But the cognitive load of deciding every time I get in my car "am I planning to have a high speed crash today?" is too much effort to integrate into my routine.
So I just put on my seatbelt every time I start the car. It's easier and more convenient. This toot is about masks.

Me: this is how bikes get repaired and recycled in this one small town.
- The junkyard guy leaves nice ones out by his gate for a day or two before dismantling them for scrap.
- there are several people in the town who know they can come past regularly and take anything by the gate
- there's a guy who takes any bikes he thinks we can salvage, they are almost always kids' bikes, there are just more of those
- a rotating group of friends and people who want to learn about bikes work on them
- when they're finished we distribute them by word of mouth: is there anyone around 6-8yo who wants a purple bike?
- the bikes seem to come with lifetime servicing. No one mentions this until the bike needs servicing, then they just say 'we better get onto servicing your bike, hey?' and it happens
- you can do a trade-in/upgrade. Kids swap their bikes for bigger bikes, people service the little bike and give it to another kid
-there is no name, no official location, no contact details for this, it's an ephemeral property that emerges from the community every day that the community has capacity to do it. It is fascinating and I am glad to have witnessed it.
Sustainability tutor: so first off this could never happen without NGO administration, start there

@nprofile…d2rl you could potentially own in a regional centre like Ballarat, Shepperton or Bendigo for less than the rent in Brunswick and have a cheaper, more convenient commute into Melbourne CBD.
They're far away in literal distance, but the Vline* system is excellent. I've lived in a regional centre and commuted daily into Melbourne, I actually found it way more convenient than living in the suberbs of Melbourne.
*regional public transport system, separately managed from the metro system, vastly cheaper and nicer

For anyone who isn't aware of it, Bushfire.io will give you satellite heat data from FIRMS, wind and weather info, aircraft tracking (filtered to only show fire related aircraft), evacuation areas and road closures all on one map.
It was very handy for navigating the recent Grampians fires. It's available as an app or it works just as well as a web page.

It's common in extreme temperatures to have the idea that if you've been hot (or cold) all day and will be all night, there's no point going to a space with livable temperature just for an hour or two.
This is exactly the opposite of how it works. Temperature related illness can be cumulative. Getting cooled down/warmed up for an hour or two every 24 hours is very valuable.

If you had wages stolen from you at RM Williams Doncaster, Eastland or Chadstone in the last decade, hit me up. I may be your witness.
I was management. I noticed this happening and reported it repeatedly. HR told me to fire the employees who had been underpaid instead of organising back payment (I refused and organised backpay for those I knew about, before being pressured to resign so a new manager could come in a fire anyone needing backpay).

Please get out of Halls Gap. Now. Yesterday.
A leave immediately was issued late last night. I understand that emergency warnings are taken as suggestions rather than instructions by most communities. But eucalyptus fires in tight valleys don't fuck around and neither should you.
The specific conditions (topography, ecosystem, local climate, social factors) make Halls Gap a case study of a tragedy waiting to unfold.

We don't talk enough about external locus of ethics.
People can have a firm ongoing sense of identity: I am a [political party supporter] from [place] who loves [value] and supports [concept].
This all seems good and normal.
But then what happens when people need a constantly shifting moral compass to keep this position? We recently saw the answer: the moral compass will shift just about anywhere to preserve the rest of the identity.

It's weird that the bra-wearing aesthetic doesn't go out of fashion more often.
Bra shapes with varying appearance, comfort and practicality go in and out.
It's odd that since its invention, the bra itself rarely goes out of fashion.
[inb4 'I actually need bras, they're not a fashion accessory, they're a need' yes, same. I need stable shoes. I need sun hats. I need thermals. Arguably we all do. That doesn't keep them in fashion for a hundred years at a time.]

One of my main uses for alt text is working out what the author thought was notable in a picture where everything is the same level of wild to me.
Eg. *pic of a chaotic city street scene, many people are doing many different things on the street*
caption: wow, this is so wild! I have never seen this before!
(alt text: scene of taxi rank in [place]. one of the taxi cabs is blue instead of yellow!)

2024-05-26 05:53:50 UTC

Pretty sure I've said this before, but alt text is brilliant for crossing cultural divides and telling me WTF is going on in pictures from contexts I have never seen before.
I don't expect anyone to recognise what a forestry skidder is for, no one expects me to know what a Wendy's is for. I don't expect anyone else to recognise an autoclave, no one excepts me to recognise a doorbell cam.
Ideal. No notes.

People: ...but what do you *want* to do?
Me: Surviving capitalism has nothing to do with what you want and the sooner you accept that the easier it will be.
