Apple’s new #MacBookPro is just half a millimetre slimmer than the old one, and a few mms shorter in the other dimensions, but with a 14% reduction in weight. So it’s basically the same form factor just a bit lighter. Not the ultraportable pro-level machine some (i.e. me) had been hoping for… #Apple

At present, government funding only covers 60% of the cost of teaching, so universities have to make up the shortfall somehow. Hard to see how this can be resolved without urgent government intervention, which is why (among other things) the ongoing talks on public sector pay are so important.

2026-10-24 08:49:20 UTC

- reply

This was of course entirely predictable—and indeed predicted (see below). What’s new is that, like the UK before it, the Irish government’s own clampdown on international visas is the source of the problem. Additional government funding is urgently needed to keep the university sector competitive.

The uncharitable explanation is that the Minister doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I’ll leave you to draw your own conclusions… 🤨

2026-10-19 20:01:25 UTC

The charitable interpretation here is that this is deliberate misinformation since it conflates the €250m *funding gap* with the agreed *rate of decrease* of €25m per year. Having failed to achieve that, the gap is closing more slowly than agreed, hence the need for additional funding. #SpéirGhorm

This is a very cool feature of the (now very expensive) #AppleTV box. Though I wish they’d allow for other configurations, such as including a front or rear centre channel. For music, stereo works well enough, but a centre channel makes a huge difference for film… [www.macrumors.com/2026/10/19/t...](https://www.macrumors.com/2026/10/19/tvos-27-2-homepod-surround-sound/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon )

Plus, each individual #HomePod is already stereo, so having, say, a central HomePod plus pairs of HomePods front and/or rear, would make for a great home cinema experience! In any case, it’s an impressive feat to get the system to self-calibrate to the acoustics of the room. 🙌

To be clear, this isn’t meant as a criticism of students, many of whom are juggling assignments with paid work and lengthy commutes. But the formulation of the policy adds to lecturers’ workload since there is no integration between the extension system and VLE, meaning manual checking is required.

I could just give ALL students an extra week without penalty, but that goes against how the policy is formulated. So the rational thing to do is simply move assessment deadlines back a week in the expectation that students will avail themselves of the extension, which renders the policy pointless.

It may just be novelty, since the system is new, but it seems that this might not be the case, which is going to add considerably to the workload of grading essays since I’m supposed to cross-reference students who have declared extensions with the work that was actually submitted to assign a grade.

2026-10-19 08:11:17 UTC

#UCD has introduced a new system of ‘self-declared’ extensions for assignments without any documentation or permission required. Predictably, this has resulted in a full third of my students granting themselves an extra week’s extension… #teaching #grading

This is contrary to guidance we were given before the change was introduced that, where similar systems have been introduced at other universities, the vast majority of students submit on time with only a relatively small number of self-declared extensions.
