I maintain an altar for my ancestors, where I keep candles lit. When grief strikes, it becomes a very active place.

#WritersCoffeeClub 10/15: What's the last thing you read to really impress you, prose-wise?
The last thing I gave top marks to was a reread of "The Maltese Falcon." This time I was studying it as one of the best Cinematic POV novels ever written. I have a talent for fanfic and pastiche but Dashiell Hammett's style is not one I can match.

#Wss366 Pet #TimeTravelAuthors 08/23. Pets or animals in your storyPets
I have always felt #pets are more work than they are worth. You need to keep track of them and justify their being in the story. That being said, Bijou, before the rabbits killed her, had a lab rat she was fond of. It’s mentioned a few times. The longest passage is in Time Argonaut: .
Patroclus chirped happily upon seeing me, hoping for snacks. As the first animal to time-travel, I pampered him. Having risked his life for me, he deserved hazard pay. No matter how I felt, I wouldn’t ignore him.
After feeding my time-argonaut his favorite treats and stroking his pink-dyed fur...Animals
I have a great deal of fun with animals by placing characters within their minds so their perceptions blend with the animal. This takes place in “The Crow and the Witch” when #Airisu becomes a crow. There is also a long section in #KonbiniIdol where Ume witnesses several scenes through the eyes of a frog. For example:
A long, thin tongue flickered into view — mine, but not mine — and vanished. My mind recoiled. — The Empress’s frog?
Was I…
Mikawa’s whispered cry of “Sssheee sss…” seized my attention before I could grasp the last thought. Through the fog came one thought: Mikawa. Then came a sharp click — my receding human mind supplied a label, “the Empress’s fan” — and a stab of instinctual fear. “Bad things. Danger. Mistress angry.” Fragmented feelings tumbled in my head, pushing out rational thought.
“…minnneee…” The sound tapered off and vanished, like a dragonfly swooping past too fast to catch. Part of my mind recognized these sounds as the last I’d heard from Mikawa, as Takiyasha banished her. But it was the fan’s click that dominated my thoughts, signaling danger.

“Honey stains thy lips. I am not known for generosity. But for my sister’s sake, I will make an exception and trade the woman for the man.” His porcelain hand waved with cold indifference toward Tomo.
I should accept the deal. It was the only rational path to save Shishi. I shut out Kan-chan’s pleading — “Please, Ume” — calling on me to refuse the trade. I braced myself.
Like Judas or Mitsuhide at Honnō-ji, I would betray her.
But which betrayal was worse — turning my back on one love, or the other?

Rocky’s Treat
#FanFic #TitanicVoyage @nprofile…02nk
#Wss366 Paramount #TimeTravelAuthors 08/5. bitter/sour/mean #WritersCoffeeClub
“I think it’s funny,” Clara said.
She stood wide-eyed in front of the counter at a small café at one end of the town’s only mall. Clara had adjusted to the mall more quickly than Liam had expected. ‘It’s just like a shopping street in New York—brighter, cleaner and covered—but not that different.’
The movie they had gone to, “Lieutenant Nightingale,” was quite another thing. She had been stunned.
“I saw ‘The Miser’s Heart,’ and that was nothing like that movie,” Clara said of the film. “I prefer the kind of moving pictures Mary Pickford used to star in."
"They were so casual about the 'you know what.'" She blushed. "But I liked that Miss Nightingale wasn’t a poor little thing. Little Kathy was so useless in ‘Miser’s Heart.’ But Barrymore, the thief, was dreamy. But this had so much color and sound; you could hear what they said.”
They had just left the #Paramount film “Lieutenant Nightingale,” a superhero film picked by Rocky. “I pay, I pick um,” he had said.
Liam was just happy that his friend had settled on a film featuring a female superhero. If he had had more money, he would have taken Clara to something more romantic, but being unemployed and the expense of setting Clara up in an apartment had drained what little resources he had. It was all he could do to treat them to a drink at the Mesa Café.
“What’s funny?” Rocky asked.
Clara pointed to a candy jar on the counter. “Penny candy that cost a quarter.”
“It’s just a saying,” Liam explained.
Meanwhile, Rocky picked out a pink gummy worm and paid for it. “Here, Clara. Bet you’ve never had candy like this.”
She looked dubiously at the long pink thing he handed her.
“Go on, take a bite,” Rocky prompted.
Liam opened his mouth to protest, but too late. Clara took a bite, then made a face. “You’re so #mean, Rocky! It’s #sour!”
“What did you expect?” He pointed to the label on the jar, which read “Extra sour peach gummy worms.”

Rain of Fish: Part 1 of 3
#FanFic #TheApothecaryDiaries
#Wss366 Dungeon (referenced) / #ScribesAndMakers Tell us a fish story
Mao clicked her tongue when Steele, “her” mercenary guard, arrived at the medical office. The apothecary could tell at a glance that Steele was not there for medical attention, which could only mean another summons. Ugh, what if that pervert, Lakan, wanted something for the morning-after-demon? Least Kan Lakan be Forgotten:
The rush of burn victims had slackened, and the business at hand was cleaning up and restocking supplies. Dr. Liu hardly looked up before he waved Mao to go. He had already borrowed En’en and Yao from their normal duties, and they were more than adequate for the routine work of boiling and rolling bandages.
Mao’s fellow physician’s assistants knew better than to pay attention to her leaving. Who would want to earn her or Dr. Liu’s ire? Except for one person, and even he kept his voice low to avoid the doctor’s attention. As she passed through the door, Tianyu said, “Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone could call a personal attendant after a night of debauchery?” Word spread fast when someone bested Kan Kakan.
“Kill him,” she said to Steele.
“As you wish, M’Lady.”
The mercenary’s hand went to her sword, an unusually fine one, a gift from the Moon Prince for her part in rescuing Mao from The Mad Frank’s minions. The Mad Frank’s Dreams:
“Niang Niang!” Tianya responded, eyes wide.
“Don’t bother,” Mao told Steele. “I’ll do it myself later.”
Steele relaxed. “Come, the Prince wants you, something to do with a prisoner and a fish story.”

I don't think either Quasi or I follows that rule. I figure it mainly means the author's aim is to have their work read over time and need to maintain interest between EPs. Cliff hanger being one way.

Snip Bijou the Time-Traveling Ghost:
The Countess wore a 17th-century-style dress of deep crimson satin, but with a décolletage that was totally 1920s. It was further accented by black lace and tiny rubies or, more likely, red glass that could have been mistaken for blood droplets in this light. Her mask was delicate, enameled porcelain, shaped like a weeping face from a sepulcher.
Using her other hand, she linked arms with me. Unlike the fingers that had tugged my sleeve, it was gloveless, displaying long, talon-like scarlet nails. They were hands that had never worked beyond claiming what she thought was hers.

#Wss366 (Bonus) Doll #ScribesAndMakers Ripple
There was a young girl in black robes. Her long, ashen hair blew in the wind, for her pointy hat had blown off and was clutched in her hand. On her robes was pinned a star-shaped brooch, marking her as a witch.
Who could it be?
Of course, it was me, Elaina, the Ashen Witch.
The narrow country road, my feet followed, ran between farm fields that lay as far as the eye could see. Sweet potato, rice, lush clover, tall leeks, cabbage, and many more; for this was a rich agricultural country. White flax blooms rippled in the wind, and small red flowers, like a carpet, bloomed between the crops.
Presently, I came upon rows of peas, with a girl no older than me sitting in the middle of them. Around her were piles of shelled peas that nearly hid her blue satin dress. With her porcelain complexion, seated amid the carpet of red flowers, she almost appeared to be a #doll. In her hand was a newly shelled handful of emerald globes, which she studied carefully before discarding and moving on to the next unopened pod.
She called out when she saw me, "You can’t have him."
I smiled and nodded. "As you wish. May I ask who I shan't have and what you are doing?"
"I am looking for my prince?" Her tone implied she thought me a dunce, but I didn't mind. I thought her rather foolish looking for a prince in pea pods.
"Is he a pea?" I asked, imagining a prince shoved into a pod. The thought made me grin. There wasn’t enough room for a noble’s ego in a pea pod, let alone his body.
"Of course, where else would he be?"
"In his castle or hunting a dragon," but I kept those thoughts to myself.
"And how will you know him?" I said instead.
"I just will. He will be the handsomest pea to ever have existed."
"And will you kiss or eat him to transform him back?"
Her look was withering. If I had been one of the crops, I would have shriveled up on the spot. "Neither, I will put him under my mattress. He will keep me up all night, and I will bear him a beautiful blond heir."
I didn't ask how this would all transpire. Instead, I put my hat on, for the wind had dropped, bid her farewell, and continued on my journey.

#ScribesAndMakers 02 a question
@nprofile…4gas
How do crows influence your writing, or how do they manifest in your writing?
They make an appearance at the end of "For Love of a #KonbiniIdol" as symbols that the LI has grown and made major changes in her life, but is still the same person at the core. Dark, quirky, not always polite, mischievous, and not entirely bound by human morality.
@nprofile…2utx: The above should answer why crows appear around Shishi's feet at the end.
A crow is the main narrator of "#Airisu: The Crow and the Witch." I have tried to blend human perceptions of crows with how a #crow actually sees the world. I like writing non-consensual reality things.
She is modeled after American #Crows. I have done some research and lots of observation of crows in an urban environment, and how they interact with both friendly and unfriendly humans and other crows.

@nprofile…n2fr #ScribesAndMakers #TTMD #Serial #Serials 2/2Tips
Remember, readers, will be reading a bit at a time over months, if not years. Every chapter should include reminders of what just happened. The more subtle the show, the better. Tell is obnoxious used this way. If you later release in novel format, you can go back and edit where this is janky.
Per above: You need to keep your readers interested over a long period of time. They will not forgive you for breaking your initial covenant with them. (See fanservice below.)
Have a clear picture of your characters and/or world. Otherwise, your work will wander all over the place. Remember, you don’t have the luxury of going back and editing it for consistency.
Per above: Once it's out there, it’s out there.
Readers are more forgiving of McGuffins. You need hooks for later and foreshadowing. Chekhov’s gun only applies if the gun is smoking.
The pace is different. There is less room for info-dumping, transitional chapters, etc. On the flip side, there is more tolerance for something that is interesting but may not advance the plot.
Readers like some fanservice, but don’t let it take over. I define fanservice as something your specific audience enjoys, be it sex, food, fights, or heroics. Spread it out, and if you notice that you have delivered on the goodies for a few EPs/chapters, throw something in. If you republish as a novel, you can edit it out if you don’t like it.
Anchor each character with some identifiable traits so readers don’t lose track of them.
There are a bunch of them, more than enough to give you something to think about.
Oh, yes. YMMV/ Rules are meant to be broken. I am not a kami of writing, just another hack doing my best.

What do you like/not like about releasing work this way? Any tips, sites, or software recommendations? Anything that surprised you about it? 1/2What I like best.
It keeps me honest with writing. I have regular goals that are small enough to envision achieving.
It is the dominant format in the publication channels I use. Which allows me to write and publish without worrying about marketing, formatting to publication sites' specifications, and Corpo censorship (Amazon and credit card companies, I'm looking at you.)

I’d messed up badly. Not only had I frozen and gotten Matsumoto hurt, but I’d ruined the vision we were following. Matsumoto had been with us in the Katasu vision, but now she had gone home. Shishi should be yelling at me, not comforting me. Glorious me was going to protect her. Right, instead, she was comforting the big baby.
When we reached the tunnel, she finally spoke. “We should chant. Those hands were creepy.”

#WritersCoffeeClub 21. When writing about unpleasant feelings, how do you avoid alienating the reader entirely?
Not wallow in it. Otherwise, I assume readers are not so fragile that a little unpleasant feeling won't break them.
Hopefully, they realize I have a covenant with them to deliver what my book sets out to do, i.e. since it is yuri, the two women will kiss and hopefully start a happy life together. There is yuri that doesn't, but I think I convey effectively that mine is HFN.

#Review: #ReformingAnIcyFinalBoss: Getting Back at the Self-Proclaimed Villainess with the Power of Friendship Vol. 1 (#IcyBoss)
#LightNovel by #Takamedou
English Pub: #JNovelClub (1-9): (7 Entertaining)
#Fantasy #Isakai (sort of)
Angelina Grey—the self-proclaimed villainess—is isekaied into her favorite otome. But despite her beliefs, she is not the person the world revolves around. Milly Asteara, the ‘Icy Final Boss’ is.
IcyBoss is reminiscent of “My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!” (Hamafura). Milly, an intelligent, powerful magic user, and total social baka, discovers the power of friendship. Like Katrina Klaus (Bakarina), she has powerful charisma, which hinders her from becoming the badass delinquent villainess she dreams of. But that’s okay as she gathers her flock of friends and locks horns with Angelian Grey.
This was a lot of fun to read. It missed a higher score due to some moments where I was knocked out of the story by interactions that didn’t ring true, as well as the shallow portrayal of Angelina.
Volume 2 is already streaming in prepubs, and I can’t wait for all the chapters to be available.
Volume 1 is free for J-Novel Club members until 26/02/16
Volume 2 is free for J-Novel Club members until 26/04/15
