There's many reasons to call these Terrible Comics, as you can see.

@nprofile…s0wa OK, I was gonna check myself, cuz I know it's not, like, ALL your fault if stuff loads slow, it has to come from another server, but then I was scrolling inktober posts and realized the SLOWEST LOADING IMAGES ARE FROM SDF.ORG like, left hand not talking to right hand???
It's an actual potato, right? Just admit it's literally a potato, I could accept that.
Timeline seems to have sorted itself, still slow to post, and retrieve images, video is still "maybe, probably never though."

@nprofile…5uqu Not pet-solo but human-solo for a long time now. And my old dog doesn't like to snuggle, though I do make sure to pet him every day. Feeling this thread enough to want to keep track of the replies, because I have nothing to offer except the awareness that not touching anyone is making me unhappy.

Just domain blocked @spinster.club for being a TERF server.
If you deliberately set up your server to be a home for hate I have no problem with an instance block.

@nprofile…rtl5 He is still dog. He is not in pain, afaict. He still enjoys his life, he just needs a little help on the stairs, and I'm not putting him down.

@nprofile…zejv You work on wikipedia, don't you? Can you give me some points to make to Lindsay Wilson, "Donor Relations Specialist" when she replied to my email about not giving WMF any more money until they recognize the union with a description of the legal process they are using to "determine who is eligible to vote" and forcing another vote of "eligible" employees? Because it sounds like a bunch of legalese for "we're doing our best to limit the pool of voters to those who don't want a union."

@nprofile…pfuj Think about Flock: tracking every plate, using facial recognition, matching web data to a profile, tracking locations etc etc. A surveillance state takes a LOT of computing power.

@nprofile…pfuj well, considering China is making retina scanners for credit purchases a thing, I think we can guess what they're doing with the data centers.
The same thing we are: building a surveillance state.

@nprofile…x9q9 I have seen signs on the road here in Vermont with prices crossed out and new, much higher prices painted on. We're up to $55/gallon and that's at the farm.
Global warming is fucking with the maples, hard.

@nprofile…pfuj When we first got married, my wife wanted to buy a couch. Just wait, I said, one will appear. No, no, she wanted to buy a couch. So we went to a furniture store and put a deposit on a nice couch.
Within days, before the delivery of the new couch, a couch appeared.
Argument by anecdote is always suspect, but in this case your husband is correct. Please tell him I said so.

@nprofile…pfuj My mother wants me to help her write exactly this kind of book. She is a genealogist, among other things, and has spent extensive time in graveyards and courthouses reserching out family back to the revolution, and helps applicants to the DAR do their geneology. She wants to write a history focussed around Bucks County, PA.
I am dragging my feet on agreeing to help with this project, have been for years, and will probably try to do so until she dies.

@nprofile…25ct (raises hand) can I be in the cabal?
I have books, speedball inks, and a tiny press. It's mostly for lino blocks, but I am also an engineer with a machine shop in the garage, I'm pretty sure I could build an actual printing press. I also have a giant roll of paper (~5' wide and several hundred feet long, heavy card.)
Pretty please?

@nprofile…pfuj It's not weird, it is the perverted economics of electricak consumption in this country.
For businesses, electricity gets CHEAPER by kWhr, the more you use.
Residential users: $0.40 per kWhr
Commercial, under 10,000 kWhr: $0.20 per kWhr
Commercial user 10K to 20K KWhr: $0.10 per KWhr
Commercial user over 20K KWhr: $0.05 per kWhr
and so on.
Now ask your question about reserving kWhr again.

@nprofile…xkhf Buy physical books. Stockpile them. Read them, share them, love them. Dedicate some of your personal space to them.
Personally, I have just a few books, around 1000, but I am always trying to get more (library discards, free shelves, outright theft, purchasing, etc.)
Always been a dream to run a used book store.
None of that will save us if we lose the publishing industry though. Knowledge is a community effort.

@nprofile…35vy In the 1977 story "Lucifer's Hammer," which is about a civilization-ending comet impacting earth, a man makes it to the grocery store after much of the gorceries have already been purchased or looted, so instead he stocks up on spices and condiments. At some point in the story, his truck gets lit on fire and the smells coming out drive all the hungry cannibals wild.

@nprofile…pfuj The water stuff is clearly Iran, by the style of the attacks from what I have read, and they're not publicising it because it makes them look bad, which is why "no one cares" and it's not getting a ton of coverage. Also it was kind of not a big deal. Also the Chump blamed the Governors, which PROVES it was Iran, and this is the best they can do, which isn't nothing but was immediately fixable.

@nprofile…pfuj If they're announcing they caught the guy, it's because they want to make it look like the crazies are attacking the chump, so they can justify their law and order bullshit. And they would LOVE to make it seem like he was part of a bigger movement because that feeds their narrative as well. The only thing we won't know is if it was a setup.
Most likely they will claim he was antifa, no matter what he was.

@nprofile…r37k @nprofile…2ujz It was irrational then too. And I know that because I bought a house, refinanced a mortgage, and then sold the house one month before the bubble popped, and my timing was based entirely on NYT & other's articles about how there was no way these mortgages weren't a bubble. We knew then the same way we know now. But the same now as then is that the people who made those loans think they're going to get out before the pop and leave us holding the string on a limp balloon.

No, you can't blame the aide.
No, you can't blame the staffer.
No, you can't blame the messenger.
No, you can't blame the agent.
Responsibility CANNOT BE DELEGATED. It always resides with authority.

@nprofile…vfe6 I have watched rabbits clear my 4' garden fence in a single jump, no climbing necessary. So it won't matter what the fence is made of, really.
The best deterrent I have ever used is strips of mylar ribbon hanging from the fence and tree branches. This basically keeps everyone away, birds and rodents and rabbits, because the ribbons fluttering in the breeze look like a snakes to them.

@nprofile…pfuj So, Banana Republic has been around since the 80s, when I was in HS it was all the rage. And you COULD buy a lot of very military looking clothing, particularly "safari" shirts in khaki with epaulettes, etc. And if you went into the flagship store in Cambridge, they had an open top expedition jeep in desert tan in the middle of the store, looking as if it had just come from fighting Rommel in the desert. It was the beginning of the camo trend in US fashion.
