I guess maybe json/XML data of "state of the last app" that you can massage into the right shape to use in the current app?
It's that translation-of-structured-information problem I'm having trouble seeing any halfway universal approach to.

Isn't this more of a "small screens are hard to do anything non-trivial with" problem?
On an interface large enough to see multiple applications at once, this is trivial.
I'm trying to imagine the grammar of the data structure that lets you say "grab these $N things from this app, and let me go to another app and do something arbitrary with them", and I'm coming up empty. As you say, maybe I'm not imaginative enough 😛

How is this list constructed?

It'd be neat to see this broken down by country of residence. Americans, by stereotype, don't visit much. Canadians (like me!) love to but are far away. Europeans, I imagine, would have to put in special effort to not visit a bunch of nearby countries regularly. What about others?

100%.
it seems like a common practice though - I'd love to hear a counterargument to this if anyone has one.

I'm not sure I know what that means?... Wait. Dammit. Well played.

I'm about 93% kidding -- law is a bad tool here. I just can't understand how so many fonts fail to get this right, or explicitly choose to do it this way? In my mind, it's basic table-stakes for a reasonable and useful font.

It should be illegal to make a font where the numeral "1", lower-case "L", upper-case "L", or numeral "0" and upper-case "O" are not clearly distinguishable. #hottake
