So I have pretty peculiar requirements for a text editor:
• Flexible file-local (and beyond) search (this disqualifies #VSCode)
• Powerful regex (this disqualifies all #Plan9 editors) with deep integration into the editor (this disqualifies VSCode; kind of disqualifies #Emacs, because its regex are… unconventional)
• Extensibility, no matter how weird (this disqualifies VSCode)
• Multi-buffer multi-file multi-project nature (this disqualifies VSCode)
• Ability to avoid the mouse (this disqualifies VSCode)
Non-requirements:
• Syntax highlighting
• Realtime / screen / immediate nature
• Modality (more harmful than useful, at least the way it’s implemented in most “modal” (#vi) editors)
So yes, I am again confronted with the idea of making my own text editor that’d “zoom in” into lines and “zoom out” into files, directories, projects, filesystems, machines.
But no, I’m not making one. I already surrendered to the temptation of making my own #Scheme, which now is almost R5RS-compliant. So no, I totally am not using it to write a text editor. No.

It seems I have to buy a new phone. The current one stopped charging, and the only suggestion people at the service center had was swapping the whole motherboard. Which is more expensive than getting a new phone. Bummer.

@nprofile…xa9x the section you linked to lists two failures, but it lists them in regards to the post author is reviewing. Both of these points can probably be addressed (though the tabs would need to communicate the actual switch of the tab; ARIA status or something?) I realize that it might need a bit of JavaScript, which I’m avoiding. But I’m motivated enough to try and make it work.

@nprofile…xa9x re appearance:none: yes, that seems to be the way I gravitate towards.
Re don’t use: yes, these are not semantically perfect for tabs. But there are no native tabs in HTML, so we have to make do with what we have. But you planted a seed of suspicion in my head with the words on AT confusion.

2026-08-10 22:56:34 UTC

An #accessibility #a11y finding: hiding #HTML inputs (as in display:none;) makes them and their labels (even if labels are visible) unfocusable with keyboard. So, to make e.g. the radio tabs pattern accessible, you have to un-paint the radio buttons instead of hiding them. Which is ugly and anti-semantic.
Any better way I’m missing?

Wondering if I should make a #Haskell Hoogle alternative, but for #Scheme. index.scheme.org has an exhaustively typed listing of most SRFIs and all of the standard. Might it be useful? Types are documented, but something like type variables and dependent types are missing, so there’s not much complexity and richness to the system…

But I need to stress-test this design against possible use-cases for such a GUI. What are the small GUI apps you use daily or want to have that’d benefit from a really simple custom GUI you can hack up in an hour?
So far I have:
• Disk flashing utility (I keep forgetting the commands)
• Shell
• Music player
Any other ideas?

That’s exactly the problem. I want to have multiple implementations of a common standard for everything I do, because that’s (almost) the only way to ensure my software works across time. Having a single reference implementation is fun, but I don’t wanna risk that.

I am indecisive about this post: https://solar.lowtechmagazine.com/2020/12/how-and-why-i-stopped-buying-new-laptops/
On the one hand, it does make sense to buy used high-quality repairable machines instead of new replaceable glued garbage.
But, on the other hand, does it really make sense buying an extremely old laptop AND two more for spare parts because getting these parts is hard? This feels like an unnecessary multiplication of e-waste to me.
My approach is: I’m using my extremely underpowered 2020 Lenovo Thinkpad for the longest possible time and then I get an X220 from 2011, because that’s the last model with a good keyboard that’s still relatively powerful enough to handle my type of computing, and roughly the same specs as the current one, in fact. But it’s a hard sell even to me, because computing is heavyweight in a general case. Might be quite inconvenient with such a laptop, especially in two or three years from now.
Time for a SIMD-powered application stack anyone?

2026-02-09 00:12:32 UTC

So I have a really high rubric for my projects: “does the world need new software?” one.
The more this “#AI” craze drags, the more convinced I am that the world actually doesn’t need more.
True, a person with spare $1K can buy a #Claude subscription and slop up a “product” scratching their own itch. The necessity of scratching either itch aside, I doubt that this product will be innovative and useful, with all its single-purpose undocumented APIs and flat faceless #Tailwind design.
There are projects solving all kinds of issues already. The problem is not creating them. The problem is learning and extending them. That’s often a hard, but nonetheless important part. Because if we invest in good #FOSS projects that are flexible and useful enough, we’d get better foundations to solve problems on. Without the need for slopifying a new project every time there’s some difficulty we encounter.
The world doesn’t need more software. It needs better software.

Hey fedi, is there any list of fash software that one should steer clear of? With all the nasty stuff happening to projects, the list is likely to be big, but it feels quite useful still.
Like, a single place to track all the fash-tech, with proof links and alternatives listed.
Did anyone come up with something like this?

2026-01-13 00:42:33 UTC

Tested #ChatGPT with generating simple #ed(1) scripts. Not even close. #sed and #awk syntax keeps getting generated into the responses. And overall ed(1) use is pretty nonsensical.
So, I urge you, in case you want to become an irreplaceable professional and an #AI-resistant person… use ed(1)!

New #CommonLisp library I made to finally write #Lisp in #ed comfortably and reusably: line-readtable! Provides a couple of reader macros removing the need for parentheses, packaged into a named readtable for your convenience 🖤
I have ideas for a couple more reader macros, and then I'll submit it to Quicklisp. But it's fairly usable as is already!
https://codeberg.org/aartaka/line-readtable
An example from my https://aartaka.me/lisp-lines.html that works perfectly fine with line-readtable:
(defun factorial (n)
(if #/ < n 2
1
#/ * n #/ factorial #/ 1- n))

A second shot with a link now.
Robert Kingett’s @nprofile…lx0q ‘s “The Colonization of Confidence” is a piece that makes me want to write weird and colloquial, ragged and jarring. Human. I still suck at literary English, but I don’t want to suck even more and surrender to Artificial Inferiority.
https://sightlessscribbles.com/the-colonization-of-confidence/

2025-12-13 01:21:16 UTC

@nprofile…lx0q still reading your “Colonization of Confidence,” but it already hits me: writers (I say as one) are often obsessed with being “real,” “slick,” “professional” over colloquial or weird. Because the “real” writers are (by definition) average-sounding no-irritants un-alive smooth talkers.
I can feel the problem in that desire to sound average, but I can’t put it into words yet.

@nprofile…6nk8 yes, Readability is imperfect due to its focus on plain long form articles. Needs remixing if we’re to do something more generic with it.
There is a niche for a “website cleanup” scraper / simplifier, and I keep stumbling into it. Maybe make a C library doing HTML simplification? 🤔

2025-12-03 23:14:34 UTC

New idea for a web browser/PIM tool: vertical-only view browser. Say, something restricted to 600px in width. Because the Web is vertical.
Having this design restriction also provokes several interesting decisions:
• One element at a time is an optimal pace. Narrow view would not work well with multiple elements alongside each other. And maybe that’s for good?
• Views can be easily reordered and tiled, utilizing the horizontal dimensions of most modern screens. Imagine a browser that can be open five times on one screen without any penalties to comprehension!
• Page content needs to be ruthlessly optimized and reordered. Something like Readability.js (I keep getting back to it, all the time) but also for non-article pages?
• Can be used as a cheap GUI—still compatible with the Web, but easy to spin up in a separate window and manage with OS’ primitives.

2025-11-26 17:20:16 UTC

My main complaint about #Scheme is that it’s “not practical,” being non-portable and batteries-excluded for any sufficiently complex case. And yet my current situation (my #LambdaCalculus experiments, aspirations for the Web-resident software that’s NOT necessarily #JavaScript, and overall feeling that #CommonLisp is quite trippy when I write it) kind of nudges me towards Scheme. The appeal is real.
@nprofile…anar is partly to blame for that, showing all these beautiful combinators off in her posts. Combinators are cool, and Scheme is (almost) a perfect language for them!

@nprofile…6nk8 there are Greasy Fork (https://greasyfork.org/en) and UserStyles.world (https://userstyles.world/) for that, so my userstyle/userscript support idea is partly prompted by the abundance of actual scripts/styles and the community out there!

2025-11-15 02:14:00 UTC

💭what if I make a minimalist browser that focuses exclusively on user scripts, user styles, and adblock rules? Other features can be derived:
• Keybindings (vi, Emacs, APL keyboard—take your pick) can be added with user scripts
• Browser settings can be chosen at startup or compile time, maybe read from a config, but that’s too much complexity for such a browser idea
• Extensions & configs: unnecessary. All you do in a browser is interacting with the web, and user scripts/styles fix that just fine.
• Tabs can be replaced with opening multiple instances of a browser as separate windows
• UI/chrome is unnecessary, all you need is a window into the Web
What I’m striving for is something like Suckless Surf, but
• without Suckless
• without C
• with actually working user scripts/styles
• maintained (even if by myself)
I remember someone mentioning their Scheme/MacOS browser called Prism? I think, but I don’t have references for that anymore. The difference with that would be that Prism config file was Turing complete. Mine won’t be.

It's a script that
- Prints contents of a file, then
- Rewrites them to a script that
- Prints contents of a file, and then
- Rewrites them to a scripts that

I had to use Markdown for the README of my latest project (https://github.com/aartaka/ed.modal) and I'm not happy about it. But it fits in with the general interop-paranoid-pragmatic position I'm adopting. I want to make my writing and software (=writing) accessible and portable across all the software there might be. And that means no Org Mode or Gemtext. Plain text, Markdown, HTML, rather. I'd bet everything on HTML, but it seems no major git forge supports HTML READMEs (and yes, I've asked! https://github.com/orgs/community/discussions/109580#discussioncomment-11159714 and https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/issues/442779)
So Markdown it is.

#ed is finally self-conscious! I somehow missed that part of documentation where it says that "w" command can write to bang-prefixed command, feeding buffer contents as standard input to this command. Which means: #ed can evaluate #ed commands in its own buffer, by calling another instance of #ed on them!
With this, the sky is the limit to what I can do. I already re-implemented my (disappointingly) shell-heavy #grep version, as pure #ed script: https://aartaka.me/scripts/grep.ed

2024-12-14 07:47:53 UTC

I added two scripts to my #PATH:
- aed, or "aartaka's #ed": adds a nicer prompt and toggles help messages on. Easier interactive use.
- xed, or "execution #ed": executes the passed in script, be it file or string with commands. Non-interactive.
I do need to publish a list of all my #ed scripts someday, don't I?
