What happens to your bitcoin when you’re gone? 🤔
BAL PROTOCOL in 50 seconds: pre-signed copies, will-executors, and why one is enough.

A fixed amount of sats, every month, with no one holding your funds.
Sign twelve transactions today, each valid in a different month. Hand them to independent servers.
Each month one becomes valid and is broadcast. Your coins never left your wallet.

Most people think of Bitcoin After Life as “the Electrum plugin”.
It isn’t. The plugin is the first door.
Behind it is a protocol, and a network of servers that hold signed transactions and broadcast them on time.
What else can that carry? https://blossom.primal.net/9650ff9ef931bff5828dc792e83db3987cfcb10c35fe38ffd38cb596a112a509.png

Your family doesn't need your seed, your balance or your passwords.
They need one sentence:
"If something happens to me, there is bitcoin that will reach you on its own."
That's the whole conversation.

What happens to your bitcoin when you're gone?
Self-custody protects your coins from everyone. Including the people you love.
30 seconds on how a time-locked transaction, signed only by you, reaches your heirs on the date you chose.
No lawyer. No custodian. https://blossom.primal.net/508c6fce98d61bfb41237e3376a709bc3e6a9dc696bd4a0fa23036150704bc6e.mp4

Should you tell your family about your bitcoin?
Most holders say nothing. Not because they don't care, but because telling feels like exposing.
It doesn't have to. There's a list of what they need to know, and a list of what stays yours.
The two don't overlap. https://blossom.primal.net/09c49a4d69ed961c5cd25b386707aeadca7d0d7f1cf1909b32d50e0c11730997.png

Check Alive uses that asymmetry.
Set a window before delivery, e.g. 6 months. Close Electrum inside it and the plugin asks you to Invalidate and push the date out.
No account, no server watching you. Just your keys.

A signed will can't be taken back. It can only be beaten.
Bring the date closer: the plugin signs a new version dated one day earlier. Free, nothing on-chain.
Push it later: Invalidate the old one with a real transaction. That costs a miner fee.

How does a Bitcoin inheritance protocol know you're gone?
It shouldn't try. No death certificate, no check-in dashboard, no account.
BAL flips the question: it waits for your wallet to say "not yet".
Stop saying it, and your heirs receive on the date you signed.

The days after a Bitcoin inheritance arrives are the most dangerous in its lifetime. Not because of the tech. Because attackers know exactly what a fresh, unprepared heir looks like.
Rules for your heir, written in advance:
• Don't be in a hurry
• Never share the seed
• Verify on a block explorer
• Trust no one who contacts you first
https://bitcoin-after.life/blog/the-quietest-day.html

A Bitcoin address without the private key is a tomb.
The BAL protocol delivers coins on time, to the address you chose, with cryptographic certainty.
It cannot guarantee your heir holds the seed that controls it.
That part is on you — and it's the only part that matters.

2026-09-20 11:48:56 UTC

The best day of a Bitcoin inheritance is the most boring one.
A block is mined.
A time-locked transaction confirms.
Your heir's wallet shows a new balance.
No lawyer. No court. No safe to open.
The hard work of inheritance happens years earlier — at a desk, in silence.

If any part of an inheritance plan says
"trust our server / custodian / federation" — that's where it eventually fails.
Replace it with something a consensus rule enforces instead.
What the Liquid hack confirmed, and why BAL only builds on bedrock:

On 6 Sept 2026, ~4,000 BTC ($320M) walked out of Liquid Network in a few hours — a bug let attackers mint L-BTC that was never backed by real Bitcoin.
Blockstream is one of the best teams in the space.
The lesson isn't about them — it's about every layer built on top of Bitcoin.

"But can't the executor abuse what it sees?"
It sees addresses, amounts, a date — and can do NOTHING with it: the transaction is already signed (can't be altered),
time-locked (can't execute early), and pays its fee only if it executes exactly as written.

Traditional inheritance:
a folder in a lawyer's cabinet with your name, your family's names, and everything you own — often public after probate.
Bitcoin After Life:
a pseudonymous transaction on a server that never asked who you are.
You can't leak what you never collected.

2026-08-19 19:57:16 UTC

The usual "solutions" to Bitcoin inheritance all quietly break the thing they're trying to protect. 🧵
Give your seed to a family member → you didn't create a backup, you created a co-owner. They can move your coins today, not after you're gone.
Hand the coins to a custodian → valid choice, but no longer self-custody. You're trusting an institution to still exist and still be willing when it matters.
Write it into a will → executors are great with houses and bank accounts. Most have never restored a wallet from a seed phrase.
There's a fourth way. Bitcoin already contains it.
