This is a *highly* recommended read to anyone out there who is curious to learn about what LLMs and generative AI tech is actually doing/can do, without the corporate hype that surrounds it.
Denis also has a knack for describing aspects of human intelligence (and "intelligence" in general) with clear language that helped me more clearly see the differences between humans and LLMs.

America is a big place and while nearly everything on this list is not universal, it's safe to say there are many more Americans who do have access to all items on this list than there are people in Finland who have access to all items.
This is not a defense of America, it is shameful how it treats the average citizen. But something I see Europeans consistently get wrong is the per capita differences.
For example: Finland has six million people. America has 23 million millionaires.

Very excited to see that #NYTimes podcasters @npub1unt…k4k7 and @npub1drp…4unm created a Mastodon instance, the #forkiverse!
Mastodon is often presented in media as weird and scary, having familiar names behind an instance can give fans a degree of comfort when making the change. More fanbases should do it!

Just discovered a @npub1gh2…tcud list that blocks pages with AI imagery from your Google (and DuckDuckGo) search results:

The most under-reported uBlock protip I know about is checking off the the "annoyances" filter lists after installing (which are not checked by default)!

Why are people spending so much on "AI" that produces stuff nobody wants to spend money on?
All this on more in the latest issue of Stay Grounded!

Regardless of the quality, even if an LLM was invented that *could* summarize as well as a human, who wants an additional intermediary with their loved ones? Who wants to play a game of telephone when they don't have to?

The Onion bid was highest *because* the Sandy Hook families were paying out of their own pockets. This feels like going out of the way to make sure the families won't get the outcome they specifically paid for.

Is there a choice? I don't see how federation works without it.

2024-11-11 18:37:42 UTC

- reply

Eh, I've heard this before but I don't really buy it! The reason I don't is because the *experience* of Mastodon is functionally identical to that of Bluesky (or Twitter, or Threads):
1. Download app
2. Make account
3. Search for people to follow
4. Post using hashtags, etc.
At no point is a Mastodon user ever faced with anything involving "federation" or "decentralization" unless they willingly choose to seek it out. It's impossible to tell it from a centralized service.

I've actually been working on a piece similar this for a few months, but I kept questioning my knowledge and the overall premise (that "AI" companies are not viable business models), checking my data and re-writing so much that I've genuinely worried the "AI" market would collapse before it was ready to be published.
Honestly this piece by [@Zitron](https://mastodon.social/@Zitron ) is so comprehensive I feel liberated!
