I must confess I was VERY skeptical about anyone filling in for @npub13cj…xnnm and @npub1xwr…3chj – but @npub12y3…05cn and @npub19f6…n48s surpassed any expectation I could have had. They make a very good podcast duo, with Darren's booming charisma and Larry's soothing presence. Their attitudes and deconstruction hold the show very well.
Keep up the good work and TYFYC, gentlemen.

R.I.P John Charles Dvorak (yes, that's what the C stands for).
The man who made me fall in love with tech journalism.
The man who took nothing too seriously or too lightly.
The man whose words I consumed for about 23 years, through magazine articles, TV shows and of course, the Best Podcast in the Universe.
He has been my compass my entire adult life. I'll miss him dearly.

After over 10 years of hearing his voice every day, I unsubscribed from the Ben Shapiro Show.
I did it after realizing I just listened to an 8.5 minute sponsor segment in the middle of a 10-minute block between ad-breaks. And the sponsor was Home Title Lock, which ACCORDING TO ITS OWN AD is a scam.
Add Ben's growing repetitiveness and giving Candace Owens a job YEARS after I warned that she has no principles except self-aggrandizement - that's not a person I want to benefit from me.

I hate ties. I think it's a garment invented to torture men and remind them how uncompetent they are. But alas - Here I am, showing off in one. And I didn't even have to humiliate myself by asking the closest woman to tie it for me. Thanks, AI.
As for the song - Armenia sent a song that is rubbish, and is proud of being rubbish. And somehow I even enjoyed it.

I never defenfed the people. I defended the ideal. And no, once you erode the idea, you actually prevent any good journalist from getting in.

I can't, and I'm not saying they are good journalists. But there are things that are the pillars of certain jobs. For journalists, one of them is the discretion of using official and unofficial material. The fact 99% of them make the wrong choices of when to use either doesn't justify taking the choice away.

that tweet was clearly written by someone who doesn't understand the situation.
Those journalists didn't demand unrestricted access to the Pentagon. They had limited access the Pentagon gave them in return for their compliance in publishing its POV with rarely any criticism. Now the Pentagon says that 'rarely' is not enough, and they MUST EXCLUSIVELY publicize its POV and nothing else.
That's not journalists' job. That's what PR staff are for.

a country is not a house. There's no one person who decides who's welcome and who's not. It's a matter of values. And, as far as I know, Australia still calls itself a "constitutional monarchy governed via federal parliamentary democracy". So if enough people there are interested in inviting her to speak, the politicians shouldn't deny her visa request.

I don't think so. Samsung is very aggressive in trying to keep customers locked to its own ecosystem, so it takes their info into its own void. No sharing (not even with Google - they make you update their apps from their own store, where the privacy policy states they practically own the info).

I want to vouch for @npub13cj…xnnm's tip from yesterday's show (#1688). About 6 months ago my workplace started changing the wheels of all office chairs from plastic to silicone, and I liked the change and wanted to do the same at home. When I looked for such wheels on Amazon, I found this "roller-blade" type and thought it made more sense than the skate-type my workplace went with. I'm VERY happy with my choice! The chair rolls like BUTTER.

There's a very big difference between being blocked by a server and being blocked by a client app. The former is stupid but fine. The latter is unacceptable and disregards the whole point of the Fediverse.

As for licensing: His blocklists for Mastodon, Pleroma etc. are provided under CC-BY-SA - so, he doesn't see them as a software issue, but as a COPYRIGHT issue.
Also, he says "This list is not comprehensive; to keep this list small, I excluded many really bad instances. I take into account not just severity, but also notoriety and likelihood of reaching/harming people on other instances". So according to him, we are the WORST of the fediverse.
What an asshole.

"I find it quite easy to handle views different from my own. It’s no secret that I’m a passionate supporter of software freedom: I’ve written two posts about how Free, Libre, and Open-Source software (FLOSS) is necessary but insufficient to preserve user autonomy".
This is literally the 1st sentence of the last article written by the same person who built this openness-busting freedom-stealing Fediverse blocklist.
This is comedy gold.

I just went over the GPL v3.0 license, which covers this app - and to my surprise, it has no clause that even remotely stands for 'freedom 0'. Seems like the FSF itself has abandoned any attempt at supporting real freedom.
The world is going in a very, VERY bad direction.

can someone please explain to me what the difference between Mastodon and Nostr is? I always thought they were just two almost identical twin protocols doing the same thing with a slightly different codebase.

2024-08-12 16:40:43 UTC

Yesterday I realized Moshidon, my favorite Mastodon client, started blocking NAS this past week. I uploaded an issue on GitHub to ask if it was intentional. The answer is scary: It is, and Moshidon is one of many apps to do so. They've blocked over 150 servers already, many of which are totally harmless (and that's beside the point, actually).
This means developers have taken the whole idea of federation and flushed it down the woke toilet. It's a huge blow for us.
