Steam is not perfect, for neither developers or players. But at the moment one of the "best" solutions we have. The reason why Tim Epic is mad is because they have to first create something as good and then refine it for better, and they haven't even reached that point. At this rate it would have to be Steam messing up for them to rise, and Gabe is playing the cruise game, just chilling and waiting. And that makes Tim so angry I bet.

oh right so games/software can be decompiled/cloned at will and nobody did anything; but it takes 1 person trying to remove spyware from their TV OS and they got banned. I am not surprised obviously. Honestly if this is the type of stuff someone is using those tools go for it. They could disappear for all I care, but if the tools exist, show 'em.

Do I know anyone who understands/reads Chinese Traditional and/or Simplified? I would like someone to just take a quick glance, not extensive, at a game to get the general impression. Not to localize or fix anything btw, I just want to have general impression of a third party because I can't know for sure.

not sure if this info is useful for anyone, but if you want to look into which controllers to make sure your game supports on Steam (and the icon glyphs too maybe). 58% of my game play sessions are using a controller, majority with an Xbox controller followed by Steam Deck.

One sad aspect is that at this rate, maybe in 5 years, it will be hard to even explain to new generation of people entering tech exactly what they missed. Kinda like trying to explain why the internet was a better place years ago.

Valve is out there making software to run Windows games on Linux with 0 changes from devs, translating completely different apis on the fly with matching, or above performance. I would not bet on a performance contest even as a joke.

Back in school, a History teacher would often send us homework that required going to a library to research (yeah before internet!), most often we were a bit lazy and did surface search, first hit or just asked the librarian.
"Couldn't find it!" / "I just have that one reference!"
She once scolded us during a presentation "you kids are losing the skills for researching information".
I finally get it, with what is happening now with search engines etc (involuntarily for many).

took some time to setup Godot C++ module system to get it to run my own C++ code instead of only gdScript, and I'm finding myself "more at home" now, the convenience of a powerful editor, and I can still use GDscript on nodes if I want to. might be my optimal balance here.

@nprofile…wgz8 they do yes, it’s taller to allow some room for the connectors on the bottom, a bit weird but works. I usually have a hub connected to the back via a long cable anyway for having on my desk so for me it’s ok, but if someone needs access regularly it’s complicated. Also both sides can take 4 fans combined which helps with more flow, overall it’s a very well though case. Time will tell if quality holds, but it’s a pretty decent price at 69 euros.

@nprofile…r7kf yeah, I built all my machines as well but was tempted when I got the invite email even at this crazy price. I have a friend who said he'd take it off my hands if I regret within a week so I decided to take my changes with less risk. I suspect in a few months the "we can build cheaper" will be gone and will just be "we can build more flexible", SM prob has some future months price increases factored in

The Steam Machine is indeed incredibly tiny, few things for reference here. But what I haven’t heard people saving is how heavy it is, it’s quite dense, I’m surprised.

@nprofile…242z this one runs SteamOS, no word on alternatives afaik

There are a bunch of Steam Frame videos floating around, but what got my attention was the “Steam Frame requires a Steam account to use”, I hope that's just a suggestion and the hardware itself isn't locked, would be the first time they lock hardware I think? Index was not IIRC.

@nprofile…40t9 yeah and this is in fact a faster way to generate said “content” that’s why I think some people might think their time investing in quality might eventually be irrelevant for most people. I don’t agree but I can understand why someone could consider “no one values handcrafted anymore”

@nprofile…40t9 I don’t fully believe it as well but I understand the reasoning, for a large % of population the slop output is “good enough”, many people don’t care if underlying foundations are rotting away in tech debt, or privacy issues or issues with planet, or whatever, otherwise we would’ve be in many situations we are, that could be prevented (non AI stuff). For many it’s a “can I get it for <free> or dirty cheap?” and consideration ends there.

@nprofile…pnjn cool, thanks for the info. I ordered it so let’s see how it goes. Also a friend told me he’d keep it in case I regret so I can test with a backup plan

@nprofile…fe2g have to run into any “oh this runs like garbage” situation? All I hear/read is performance is terrible. I don’t hear s lot of high demanding games but i would probably
Start looking into some stuff like FF7 remake, upcoming Gears etc, I don’t need 4k but I wonder if this is just slightly above S Deck and the cap is quite quick

@nprofile…wkjx yeah, and the compactness of it, and there's tons of pc-only indie games I'm yet to play

@nprofile…udln yeah, unfortunately considering they are already announcing they sold all the stock for next 2 years I think they want to keep up the prices high as much as possible, artificially or not

@nprofile…wkjx I think I would be fine with 1080p/1440p because last gen I was on Switch 1 and PS4 (although I guess Even my work PC I rarely update them incrementally, usually I let them be until "it's time", current work PC is starting it's 6th year, with a 9y old GPU. I imagine the next time I update will be complete, unless it's astronomically expensive and I can only go for CPU etc. Or maybe I'm trying to talk myself into getting one regardless xD

@nprofile…udln probably yes. While I'm not tempted in buying RAM now for work PC before it gets more expensive, I also don't think it will get to better prices in the next few years, I think this will be bad for several years.

@nprofile…wkjx I don't have a Steam Deck, and connected to the TV I would use I have a Switch 2. my only PC atm is my work pc which is on a desk, honestly my PC digital game collection is bigger than consoles but I rarely have the "stamina" to be around the desk after work hours.

2026-08-17 11:00:48 UTC

Since I've been in the queue for getting a Steam Controller for quite some time I never imagined I would get accepted into the Steam Machine one this year and added myself into the list "just in case", but got the e-mail yesterday and I'm not really sure. Really overpriced but tempting at the same time, anyone has one and want to talk me out of it (or into it?).

I'm sorry, so the solution for the slow software is not to optimize, but boost the CPU frequency?? Sure that will temporarily help, but the underlying problem remains, like painting over mold, selling the house and leaving the issue for someone else.

@nprofile…harz it’s so clear at this point they have no idea how to keep the thing rolling at the speed it’s been, and instead of trying to stabilize it and build strong foundations (if that’s even possible), they just keep on pressing the speed button
