Seeing as I couldn't hang out on Mastodon for the last few days, I actually got around to doing stuff :) Here are the first two videos of a series I've started to do on the reasoning and making of the #RepRapMicron.

I'm still saying it: Local LLMs will trash the aspirations of centralised LLMs as the technology gets cheaper and more capable.

Opto coupler with powered cooling.
More or less.
Seems to convey sufficient radiation for the job, albeit somewhat inefficiently. Hey, I'm running on solar.

For those who have not heard of the Austrian Girardoni air rifle, it's an engineering masterpiece from the 1700's. Made without modern seals it ran at 800psi and rapid-fired musket balls smokelessly even in the wet, while everyone else was faffing around with flintlocks. https://youtu.be/k5IPB9S9vNw

I found my phone graveyard. I liked the Treo a lot.
And yes, I was a flip phone fan.

At the moment a strategic extension cable network is running hydroponics, freezers, fridges, charging the car, and the tumble drier. Scheduled outage btw. Lovely weather for it.

#blackanddecker 6V/12V trickle charger died. No big deal? Well, it trickle charged the start battery on our standby generator. Or rather, didn't. I cannot manually start said generator due to prolapsed L1/L2 which is why I bought a frickin' self start in the first place. At least our solar powers the important phase, and that's all going well.

Well, bugger. A typhoon has (probably) stopped the Chang'e 7 launch for this window. Orbital mechanics and lighting conditions mean a 90+ day postponement, with the likelihood of the launch not being possible until early next year.

So if I fry a TPU thing from my #3Dprinter in olive oil, it becomes more flexible after cooling and washing. Hmm, have to investigate.
[WTF is going on at Vik's place??!]

My #HomeAssistant Pi 5 dropped off the network. Can't see why because a) it's not on the network, and b) I don't have a microscopic HDMI cable.
Boots and connects if I shove a headless Raspbian SD into it, so presumably the HA SD is shagged somehow?

Me: "Certainly, as long as you give me a copy of the transcript so that I can verify it."
Doctor: "OK, let's not use AI."

Another reason for #ActivityPub / #Mastodon to figure out a protocol that doesn't rely on static IPs and DNS: If you're not relying on an IP address or domain name, it's bloody hard for someone to block it. (And yes, I know this is hard but sadly, they're coming for us https://techcrunch.com/2025/08/29/mastodon-says-it-doesnt-have-the-means-to-comply-with-age-verification-laws/ )

Am I getting the right end of the stick? That's doing modbus things to a native TCP port on the inverter, rather than a separate modbus adapter of some kind?

2024-12-16 20:01:14 UTC

You have details or starting point for the modbus? Would like to try that. 'Course, lengthy projects problematic right now due to the RepRapMicron work and upcoming conferences.

I got as far as making a HA sun sensor from an ESP32 and an LDR. If need be, I'll make something that slips over the battery charge state lights. They could make this a lot easier given there's a wifi connection but no, everything has to go through "The App."

The major problem I'm having with connecting crap together is that they're all in little walled gardens, connected mainly for the vendor's benefit not yours. Trying to integrate car and solar inverter system was (and still is) a major PITA.

2024-12-16 04:09:47 UTC

I've programmed up the Leaf and arranged the power connection so that it has only been charging on solar power at home for the last couple of months. I have a solar-powered car!
