@nprofile…jwu8 This organization is a mess. They took me off salary a couple years ago because our state has a minimum salary and I was under it (they backpayed me to make up for it), but I reminded them about the minimum salary going into this promotion. And when it got to compensation, they said "Congrats you're salary!" And I said "That's 10k below minimum salary."
Probably have to delete this conversation soon. My industry isn't on Mastodon, but still don't want this to be seen.

You're getting promoted - Congratulations! So is your boss and one of your employees is taking over your old position. You'll be training them for the role and they've asked that you train the new hire for the department too.
Should all three of you get raises at once OR is there a reasonable order to who gets there promotion wage first? If so, where in that order would you expect your raise?

2 out of the last 3 years, I was told I was approved to go on a business trip (big convention), but then never got assigned flights or hotels. It didn't bother me too much, never really thought I was going, but this year, I was told I was approved, and a month ago they bought a badge for me and I started getting booked for meetings at the show.
I've been pinging people repeatedly over the last month just checking in on when they were going to book things. When one of my colleagues finally got booked earlier this week, I checked in and found out that they're not sending me. Apparently, it's too expensive... but of course it is, you waited until a month out to book it!
I'm so frustrated. It's easy to wave off the the years I was approved but no forward traction happened. It's really hard to wave off this year, when there were multiple ways in which it was confirmed I was going, only to be blown off at the last second.
Incidentally, they told me it'd cost $5k to send me, but I've decided to take it as a vacation, and it looks like I'll be able to do it for <$1.5k... so they're not good at booking things.

401ks seem to be setup in a very poor manner for reviewing. Everyone I've looked at shows the amount you put in, the amount your employer put in, but never the amount of interest gained or lossed through them.
The best they do is tell you the percentage of gain/loss over a period of time. But by not telling you the $ value of the gain/loss and putting everything buckets of how much you and your employer put in, it makes it feel like the gains and losses are not real.

Just saw that a Chinese company figured out a method of charging an EV fully in less than 10 min. This is a game changer! Full recharge in about the same time as a gas fill up!!
We don’t need to drive gas cars anymore and worry about who is going to mess with gas prices by starting another war in the Middle East.
My next car is definitely going to be an EV.

@nprofile…deyz I learned recently that there's a safety act we passed in the 80s that had a carve out in it to keep Jeep from going out of business in response, and that carve out allows SUVs and Trucks to skirt the safety rules and ultimately allows car manufacturers to make an additional $4k in profit on SUVs and Trucks. And this is why the PT Cruiser is considered a truck.

There's a guy on here that uses Christian hashtags to blast Christianity. And it's fair to say the Christians have done some terrible things and some terrible things have been done in the name of Christianity (not the same thing). So I get why he's upset and posting in that space. But what's interesting to me is how he attacks anyone who disagrees with him.
In his view, anyone that disagrees with him is in fact actually admitting they are the problem. The reasoning goes like this: If I post about racism, only racists get upset, so if you're upset that I posted something (perhaps even untrue) about your religion, you are guilty of the issue I'm posting about.
It's not good logic, but I think we're all guilty of it at times. I've heard Christians do the same thing.
I guess, my mind has been stuck on this as a kind of warning about how easily we can all fall prey to an us vs them mentality. Just because someone disagrees with you on one topic doesn't mean they disagree with you on all topics. It doesn't mean there's some vast, uncrossable void between you in everything. It just means you disagree about that one topic. And good discourse can help you understand each other better, even if neither of you changes your stance.

2026-04-03 15:33:46 UTC

Vice President JD Vance said he thinks UFOs are demonic. There is a part of Christian theology that lurks in the background and says unexplainable evil phenomenon are demonic, but this doesn't make sense here for two reasons: 1) There's nothing evil about UFOs (at least so far) and 2) UFOs are explainable phenomenon (usually weather balloons).
So to me, this shows someone who has been to church and heard these things said, but hasn't put much effort into understanding his faith. And that's a dangerous thing. The person with a lot of belief and no grounding in reality is dangerous. They will say and do things based on their beliefs, but without doing any actual research into what is happening in reality.
This is exactly why the Pope keeps critiquing him... he may have some faith, but he has no grounding. He'll act on impulse rather than facts.

@nprofile…86c8 Absolutely! There's definitely a lot to be said for not going in debt, a common principle and law for Jews. There are a lot of food principles in Scripture about money, but we got to be careful how we talk about it because Jesus wasn't rich, and he warned us that the poor will always be among us.
I took a lot of notes on the book, but a fair number of them were with question marks... I want to go look at the original Hebrew because I'd be in Hebrew the terms referenced aren't financial.

2026-01-14 05:40:46 UTC

I read a Christian financial success book today and it was mostly good, but towards the end they tried to get all full of encouragement and started taking verses out of context to basically say “if you do all the things listed here, you’ll get rich.”
Which is just not a promise in Scripture. It is said that wealth comes from the Lord, but that doesn’t also address the verses that say “why do the wicked prosper while your people languish?”
A balanced view would say something more like: these principles will lead you to a more successful path, but there is a no promise or guarantee of riches. The wealthy may steal from you, you may lose your house/health/wrath to natural causes… those kinds of words aren’t exciting and fun to read.

There's also the issue of Head of State Immunity and the legal principle of Equal Dignity.
Equal Dignity is what I think is itching under my skin the most, but I didn't have words for. We will not always be the most powerful country. And if we want to maintain our rights when that happens, the best thing we can do is maintain the equal dignity of others in smaller and less powerful countries. We can't just invade counties because we don't like them if we want to protect our dignity in the future. By arresting Maduro we give permission to other countries to indict us in politicized courts and invade our country to kidnap and prosecute people so indicted.

A few years ago someone on here made me aware of a free Bible conference it’s was on a very specific topic that I hadn’t heard covered before: animals and humans, so I opted to go.
Every so often I’m reminded that one of the papers I heard presented made this off handed comment that we were missing thousands of bones in Israel. Implying that since they did so many sacrifices, where are the bodies?
I’m continually baffled by the assumptions here. Maybe I’m missing something, since all the context and assumptions were left out, but why would we expect to find the bones?
1) This is an agricultural society. Bones make for good nutrients in the soil. How would they not know to either grind it to bone meal, as we do in western society today, or compost it? I’ve looked into this some, and it looks like bones decompose within a year when properly composted.
2) This is a civilization, they didn’t keep the bones in the city. No cities that keep trash inside their walls last long. Disease and rodents cause a lot of problems. If they weren’t using them for soil nutrients, they were likely moving them out for someone else to use.
3) Fossilization doesn’t happen all the time. It typically takes a pretty catastrophic event to cause fossilization. Most of the time bones are left out and nature takes care of them, scavengers take the bones, and the heat of being in a desert climate will work decomposition much faster than a lot of colder locations.
4) It seems unlikely that they’d bury the bones, which would have preserved them a bit. But even if they had, would we expect them to be treated as well as human bones and therefor me buried as deep and as reverently keeping them preserved through the rise and fall of nations?
5) This region of the world has been rife with war for as long as has been documented. Throughout all that would we expect bone piles to survive?
Anyway, I don’t get it. Maybe I’m missing something, but as it stands it seems like a weird thing to think “where are those bones from the sacrifices?”

2025-11-30 07:52:10 UTC

I’ve been looking at Micah 6:8 for awhile now and have been surprised by a few things:
1) In the phrase “Love mercy,” “‘mercy” is הסד (hesed). Hesed is the word we most often translate as “loving kindness” or some would say godly love. So this phrase could be translated as “love love.” Which is just a funny thing in English.
2) Mercy is a legitimate translation of hesed, and using it that way here makes a strong connection between seeking the benefit of others and actively helping them overcome the hardships, misfortunes, and injustices they face.
3) The phrase “walk humbly” does not mean to walk in a manner consistent with your position or to walk in a manner that acknowledges your lowliness. The word “humbly” here is not the normal work we translate as humble. It instead has a meaning of “circumspectly.” As in, we should walk in a manner that thinks about the consequences of both our actions and inactions. How do they affect others, honor God, and adhere to the first two commands to do justice (right wrongs) and love mercy?

@nprofile…xmhm you’re not being a jerk, it’s a new concept to you and you have a lot of questions. Totally normal.
I use Scripture as the basis for all of my contemplations. Does Scripture prescribe it? Yes, then I should do it. This is the most fundamental question.
If the answer is no, then why are we doing it? Where does it come from? Can we put a date and person to the beginning of it? What was their reasoning for it? How has it developed since. I’m not sure what tradition you come from, but I’m guessing some sort of orthodox. Orthodox churches split off from the Catholic Churches around 1000 years after Christ - if I were in that tradition, I’d want to know why they split, what traditions did they keep and what did they add or drop? Why? Were the decisions based on Scripture or something else?
These are the kinds of things I think are worth thinking through. However, it’s worth addressing the fact that while I have sympathy for the deconstruction movement, I’m not claiming to be part of it. I have abandoned some wrong theology I’ve been taught and moved towards adopting theology I thought was wrong before, but careful examination of Scripture showed me are correct. To that degree, I have “deconstructed.” But if you want to go deeper on this subject, you might want to look into it for yourself. That’s not a rebuff of this conversation, I’m happy to keep talking, I’m just not an expert.

2025-11-28 15:58:04 UTC

@nprofile…xmhm I think analyzing what you’ve been taught is in line with Paul’s instruction to the Thessalonians in 2 Thessalonians 3:6: “In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers and sisters, to keep away from every believer who is idle and disruptive and does not live according to the teaching you received from us”
After 2000 years there’s a lot that’s crept into the church, regardless of denomination and tradition that did not come from Paul and the apostles. And we should move away from those teachings and back to what we were instructed to do.
Some people take deconstruction too far. And I think that’s the concern you’re getting at with your question. Some people end up walking away from the faith entirely and I don’t agree with that, but I do understand how church abuse leads people to run from the church. This same dynamic is in some Old Testament passages… it’s a natural reaction and the Israelites ran from ungodly priests.

2025-11-28 15:36:36 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…xmhm well, I’m sure we weren’t taught the same traditions the Thessalonians were. Some of the traditions I was taught were created in the last couple hundred years and do not align with Scripture. Would you argue that because Paul instructed people 2000 years ago to hold fast to the traditions he taught them that I should hold fast to the traditions someone made up in the 1800s?
If so, how would you align that with Paul’s command to the Galatians: “Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ.
But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse!” (Galatians 1:7-8) ?

2025-11-28 06:58:03 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…xmhm the deconstruction movement is Christians realizing that all churches have flaws and bad theology and practice. And through those flaws we’ve all been taught to believe and act in ways that do not exemplify how God has called us to be. Therefore, we should critically evaluate the theology and practice we’ve inherited and correct the issues we find.
In many ways, this is what all Christians should always be doing, but many have fallen into a kind of blind obedience to their denomination, pastor, sect, or even political party instead of keeping their eyes on Jesus. Deconstructing, you could say, is exactly what the reformers did a few hundred years ago. However, the term itself is very new.

2025-11-28 03:06:25 UTC

Watched a seminar yesterday that still has me frustrated. Some Christians believe that anything thought up by non Christians must be wholly rejected because their fallen nature means that their ideas will have falsehoods attached to them. Taking one part of their idea and leaving the rest can’t be done, they say, because it’s all interconnected.
This is just silly, holier-than-thou thinking.
Yes, their fallen nature means that some bad ideas will be wrapped up in their good ideas, but the same is true for the Christian. We’re not perfected yet, sin still pervades our thinking too. To say their idea must be rejected in whole because of their fallen nature would necessitate that all ideas be rejected in whole because of the originator having a fallen nature. It makes no sense.
We must always find the good, dust off the chaff, and move forward.

I just acquired four boxes of Bible commentaries. If I have the energy tomorrow, I can get one or two more too. (Did not bring enough boxes on this trip to handle all this!)

Reading something in another language and noticed that it uses two words that are synonyms and translated “normally” create a weird statement in English.
In this case the words would normally be translated “love love. As in, you should love love. But I think because it sounds weird and because words can have multiple meanings it’s normally translated “love mercy.”
I’m wondering if we have words that are synonyms that you could place in a similar verb noun arrangement that would cause people to pause when hearing it and/or be potentially weird to translate.

You're right that there are a lot of different things. I agree with every example you brought up. But a private pilot is more likely to know about those things than someone who has never flown. And even with those differences, there are somethings that will be easier for you to grasp and understand. I think that's why the flight simulator enthusiast broke the landing gear and the two pilots knew they needed to pull up as they got close to the runway.

Also, if it were true, the path to becoming a commercial pilot wouldn’t include being a private pilot first. But that is in fact the first step. You learn small, you do small for a very long time often becoming an instructor and then you build up to flying big boys.

@nprofile…77wp @nprofile…0a4r @nprofile…w47d Yeah, David is wrong.
University of North Dakota ran a test a few years ago. Most failed, but those that succeeded were a private pilot, a commercial pilot, and a flight sim enthusiast. Showing that some skill is far better than no skill.

@nprofile…0a4r I’m one of them! Of course I’m a private pilot, so I have some basis for saying it, but as such i also know it’s far more complicated than the small planes I’ve flown.

@nprofile…6dq2 the backstop is designed to catch arrows from 80lbs bows. Im also shooting from about six feet away, so misses are extremely unlikely. But yes, the garage door is behind that, I would expect it to pierce that, but not go flying into the street.

This weekend I bought my first bow, and setup a little archery practice area in my garage.

The Christian should loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, set the oppressed free and break every yoke!
The Christian should share their food with the hungry and provide the poor wanderer with shelter— and when they see the naked, clothe them, and not turn away from their neighbor!

@nprofile…sskn I am unaware of the views of other evangelicals on Netanyahu. I know many blindly believe Israel can do no wrong, chosen as they are by God. I haven’t heard anyone say anything about how he’s actually chosen to destroy Israel (or America a not sure which comparison you’re aiming at here).

If Trump won a Nobel Peace prize, I would seriously start to question the validity of all Nobel Peace prizes every awarded.
It's very likely that no single individual has ever done as much as he has towards stoking tensions in the US. Few people have been as support of other people going to war as he has.
Few people deserve it less than he does.

As I continue to look at this word we normally translate "compassion," רחם (rachum) is also translated as mercy and love.
Love feels a bit strange to me, a compassion and mercy seem more connected. But in one Psalm we're told the Psalmist will rachum God. And saying that we as people will have compassion or mercy to God doesn't make a lot of sense. So in this context the translators (seemingly unanimously) choose to translate that as love.
Psalm 18:1 "I (will) love you, Lord, my strength."
Rachum also finds its origins in the word for womb. It's too late at night for me to postulate what all this means, but definitely all worth a ponder.

Beginning a study on the word “compassion” in the the Hebrew Bible. The root word is רחם (rachum) and it’s only used as an adjective 13 times in the Old Testament. A couple interesting notes:
1) it’s the first word God uses to describe himself (Exodus 34:6)
2) 12 of the 13 uses are to describe God. The 13th use is an exhortation for what we ought to be (Psalm 112:4)
The word is used a bunch more as both a noun and a verb, and I’ll be studying those use ages next!
