If you have ever successfully moved your GoToSocial profile (followers, following, etc.) to a Mastodon instance, I would love to know how you got it to work. I'm having to import my following list to my new Mastodon instance because nothing worked the way the docs said it should, and then just hope for the best that folks will follow me back.

I did a search for Linux distributions that are not actively using AI and DuckDuckGo gave me only links to articles and Linux distributions that are using AI or are built for use with AI. Zero results for what I was asking for. Search is absolutely dead.

A friend of mine wants to add RAM to her aging Dell tower. I went to the Dell website to see what RAM she would need. The site is absolutely unusable. Each time I tried to search for the RAM type, AI shit popped up everywhere with answers that weren't even close to what I was looking for.
The internet is ruined.

Is anyone running GhostBSD? I thought that I would give it a try but latest release is rather buggy on my Lenovo ThinkPad L14. Install appeared to have completed successfully but after reboot, my ethernet connection is not recognized and won't start and when I attempt to connect to my wifi access point, the system just locks. This same laptop seems to run rather well with FreeBSD 15.1.

The shitty way that Torvalds made this statement about AI use in the Linux kernel is fucking infuriating. If you want those of us against AI to leave, then I'll leave. I've been moving closer and closer to BSD over the past few months and this statement is speeding up that process.
I've been running Linux for more than 30 years and dammit, now I'm fucking pissed! I fucking hate AI now more than ever. If you're okay with the terrible ethics of AI, then use it. Just stop telling me that I should be or I'll be left behind. Fucking leave me behind. I don't care!

Four days without any alcohol. I'm already starting to feel better. I don't feel so "cloudy", if that makes any sense. And in just four short days, my running has gotten better, too. 14.3 miles earlier this morning. And instead of struggling to get going and forcing myself to run, I got right at this morning. I think this is the way forward.

2026-07-12 13:45:16 UTC

I've been running Linux since 1993 and to this day, I'm still learning. It's what I love so much about running Linux and FOSS. I can't even imagine what it would be like to be stuck running only a proprietary OS or apps.
I've also been running FreeBSD on and off for years, but that's about to change to running FreeBSD daily. Not replacing Linux, but running it along with Linux.
Sorry, just a simple appreciation post for FOSS, all the projects, and most importantly, all of the folks who devote their time to developing this wonderful software.

So, I've been wanting to learn a second language in an official way. I say official, because I can read and understand German but only because I used to work for a German-based company and my co-workers would always email me in German. I still struggle to speak it, though. I think I now want to learn Spanish, but in a more official way. I'm just not sure what the best "official" way is. Call me what you want, but when it comes to folks losing their jobs, data centers sucking up our water and causing higher energy bills for people already struggling, LLMs being trained on stolen data, and so many other ethical issues, I won't budge or back down on how I feel.

I've been a Linux user for more than 30 years. The HUGE understatement of year would be telling you how much I love Linux and FOSS.
With that said, I am continually disappointed at how many Linux distribution projects and Open Source software projects are "all-in" with using AI. Even with all of the ethical issues. Like with everything else, I'm now having to check project pages before downloading and using an Open Source app or curious about a Linux distribution to see if they are using AI for part of the development. There are a few projects that I have been supporting monetarily over the years but just this week, I ended the support for all of them.
Sorry, I'll get off my soapbox, but this is all just sad.

With the announcement of the AI "kill switch", I decided to download and install the recently released Firefox 148. After installing Firefox, I can confirm that the kill switch is present and does work (from what I can tell, anyway). I have to give Mozilla credit for doing what they said they would do and allow their users to disable all AI "features", but I'm still not happy that they've jumped onboard the horrible AI train. I'm torn between leaving this latest release of Firefox on my hardware or removing it because of its use of AI, even though we can disable it.

Mozilla have completely lost all understanding of their user base. And, honestly, I don't think they care. Like many others, I've unsubscribed from their newsletter, and have removed Firefox from all of my Linux hardware. The once great savior of the internet is now dead to me (and SO many others).
This is so disappointing.

Am I the only person on this planet that has never played Wordle and has no idea how to even play it?

If you are on a @nprofile…azpz instance and use an iPhone, what app are you using? I used to use Metatext but it seems development had stopped a few years ago. I think the maintainer was experiencing some health issues and had to back away for a while. I absolutely love the app but, recently, I started experiencing some issues. I keep trying different apps but they just don't do a great job of supporting GoToSocial. Or, at least, I can't get the apps to support GoToSocial.
Thanks for any ideas you might have.

The "good" that AI might do (still not convinced that there is any good) doesn't even come close to the harm that it inflicts. Electrical bills are skyrocketing, it's helping burn the planet, people are losing jobs, etc., and, etc.
If you think AI is a great thing, just unfollow me now, because I will unfollow you when I read your post praising it.
Here's to hoping the bubble will burst sooner than later, and all of those companies shoving AI into everything will feel that bubble burst. And here's also to hoping the people who got rich off of it lose everything.

At my age, and even with 30+ years of IT/Linux/web experience, I've given up on getting a full-time job again in the field. Does anyone know of any companies (or not companies) looking for a part-time Linux person, or someone that can build websites? The St. Louis Metro area would be great and remote would be awesome. Thanks!

@nprofile…dfpj I completely agree with this message. I love the command line. I'm also a user of Linux and Unix for more than 30 years. To expect someone new to Linux to jump right into using the CLI is not something that should be expected. Make it easy. And there are great GUI tools available to accomplish almost everything (and now, maybe everything).

My daughter gave me her AirPods 4. I can't seem to get them to connect via Bluetooth to my Ubuntu and Debian installs. Has anyone been able to get AirPods working in Linux?

Hey, folks! @nprofile…ar60 needs some help. If you've always wanted to help with an Open Source project, and you're a fan of @nprofile…ezx3 and Xubuntu, this would be a great time to start contributing.
Check out @nprofile…tgs9's blog post and then check out the Xubuntu contribute page:

Just finished an install of @nprofile…mg3v 43 workstation and received a pop-up from @nprofile…6tqm asking for a donation. Absolutely onboard with this way of asking for donations. Sure, if the pop-up appeared every single time I booted the machine, it would be annoying, but I'm sure this is not going to happen.
More open source projects should do this.

After many years of using @nprofile…ppv5, the end is close. My renewal date is arriving rather quickly and unemployment forces you, at times, to give up on some things that you love. I had to halt most of my monetary support for my favorite Open Source projects and I'm sadly going to have to give up my favorite email service.
I'm honestly not sure what it is about me that companies don't like but being unemployed absolutely sucks. People keep telling me to keep my head up because it will get better, but I'm now at the point where I'm sure that it won't.
Anyway, even though I am going to have to close my Tuta email account, I will still support them by telling everyone how great the service has been over so many years. If you want an email service that focuses on privacy and security, you will never find better than Tuta and their team. And that is NOT and exaggeration.
I know that there are many out there that are going through way worse than me, but unemployment, a nearly completed divorce, and hoping I can afford an apartment soon, are my current struggles. Can life suck? Yep! But at nearly 60 years of age, it will make me stronger, right?
