I don't care if Trump "bans" the name AI. I'm not calling it "superintelligence". Fuck that.
Also: "The United States also totally rejects any attempt to construct a globality scheme to control for the artificial intelligence being spoken of so much now, hereinafter called super intelligence. Changing the name."
What the actual fuck does that gibberish mean? If one of my kids said that I'd have them checked for a head injury.

This raises a very good point. It's not in dispute that authors and journalists should be paid for their work, but is it in the public interest to have facts and truth behind a paywall while lies and propaganda are freely distributed to every corner of the web? Maybe news SHOULD be a public service, but it's less likely for that to happen at the very times it's most needed.

I feel like this is something that's going to come up more and more in the near future. So far the strategy for LLMs has been MOOAAARRR. That works to a point, but not forever. Sometimes it doesn't even work to a point.

I'm complaining a lot about work today, but it is what it is. My company uses ServiceNow, which has recently announced Arc, which is a new AI agent for enterprises. My company, like many, is currently exploring AI in multiple ways, so I was doing some research on this new "Arc". In the description I find, "Arc is governed and secured by the ServiceNow Super Intelligence Control Tower." What is that you ask? I check some video material, and it all refers to AI Control Tower. So, when they 1/?

I was right in the middle of writing an email at work when my screen went black with "Restarting" in white text in the middle of the display. Last night I got a notification that said updates had been installed with two options. One, restart now. Two, restart in 5 minutes. I told it to restart now. It didn't. A few minutes later I was ready to sign off, and the pop-up reappeared. I told it to restart in 5 minutes. This morning it hadn't restarted. Now? Restarts with no warning. Windows is shit..

Just updated my home server from #Ubuntu 24.04 to 26.04.1. Went flawlessly. Everything back up and running in maybe 20 minutes. As close to perfect as I could want.

Honestly, not only should they avoid any platform like Twitter or Instagram or Facebook, they should make an effort to host everything offshore. Even if they host their own Mastodon instance, they're still vulnerable if they're using GoDaddy or Azure or GCP. Any US based service leaves you vulnerable.

Looking around at the new 5.0 release of #Mastodon that's coming here soon. I realize it's superficial of me, but the first thing that jumped out at me is I really like the new Orange theme. They've made some pretty significant changes to the UI. I expect there's going to be those that love and those that hate, but so far I'm in the former group. I've only been poking around for a couple minutes, but so far I'm really liking what I'm seeing.

This is where we need to be very careful about what we're talking about. Geoffrey Hinton is talking about AI like what the words actually mean, not the moronic "superintelligence" or confusing AI with LLMs. He brings up some very interesting questions, like how do we treat rights if AGI is ever achieved. He's not conflating AGI with whatever it is LLMs are doing. Convincingly faking text is not a route to AGI, but that's not to say AGI isn't possible eventually.

In a post I saw this morning, the author did something that I find super annoying. It could be a Monday-morning-ism or something, but it really kinda got under my skin. I read it over and over, getting more annoyed each time. It struck me on the 4th or 5th read through that I do something similar in some of my posts. Not the same way, but close enough. I'm going to stop doing that. It's really annoying.

2026-10-08 23:29:11 UTC

Two things.
First, I'm not convinced these "rouge" AI agents are actually rogue. It's a convenient excuse to avoid accountability for questionable activity. They can just throw up their hands and say, "Gosh, it wasn't us!"
Second, even if the agent acted in unintended ways, that's only possible because proper precautions weren't taken. There's always some attempt to imply agency, but agents are only programs. They're not doing something they're not allowed to do.

I just realized today that I'm the same age now as my dad was when I was born. For the record, today is NOT my birthday. I'm just stupidly slow. My youngest is older than 10 (Not exactly 10, but younger than 20, so I'm rounding). My dad was a braver man than me. I wouldn't be wanting to start a family at my age.

The "Pill" UI is an interesting idea, but I feel like it's low hanging fruit for a browser like @nprofile…60xv to add. I already keep my UI hidden virtually all the time, and the top/bottom bars just slide into view when I mouse over. I don't know of a way to make that top bar shrink to contents (not saying it's not there), but even just that would mimic a lot of what I see in #Blanc. Seems like an easy theme to mimic in #Vivaldi.

Today I escaped my first Escape Room.
At the request of my second eldest son, I threw my horde into our vehicle and drove halfway across the greater Phoenix area to get locked in a room with no technology for an hour. The only way they would let us out is if we solve a series of puzzles.
It was actually really fun! I think we'll be doing it again. No one even complained they couldn't use their phone. I don't think they even noticed the absence. Money well spent.

One more week. At this point, it's already determined that I'll never have to take another English class again. Ever.
Thank. Fucking. God.

I was dropping off my car at the shop this morning for some routine maintenance. The guy that was taking my details looked..... well...... horrible. A little disheveled and huge bags under his eyes. He apologized to me and said he only got 6 hours of sleep last night.
Now, I'm not 100% he wasn't just loaded at work, but 6 hours??? I got barely over 5. That's not even rare for me. How much sleep do people normally get??? 6 hours I'd feel pretty damn rested. I haven't gotten 8 hours for a week.

2026-08-28 20:54:37 UTC

I'm writing a research paper for my English class right now, and after I finished writing a paragraph for it, I thought it would be wise to plop it into a scanner to make sure it wasn't coming back as AI generated. To be clear, I wrote it 100%. No AI used. The detector came back 73% AI generated. Sooo, I revised the ever living shit out of that paragraph and then reran the scan. 82% after my revisions. AI scanners are bullshit.

This is going to be a dumpster fire. Musk has already sued, and even if the case goes against him, he'll appeal. The first thing they'll do is demand and injunction stopping these new guys from providing a product. Irreparable harm blah blah blah. If that gets denied they'll find someone who will grant it. That's the way the American legal system works. Rich people sue and then appeal until they get the decision they want. This won't be different.

There seems to be a prevailing idea in tech that Apple is a "good guy" company. In my opinion, this is largely due to PR and not to the behavior of the actual company itself. I'm not a fan of OpenAI, but I'm also not a fan of Apple. I think it's suspicious a company like Apple, who has struggled for years to get even a minor foothold in the AI market, is now suing an industry leader in that market. This "if it doesn't have anything to hide" logic doesn't play for me.

I'm a big fan of ZorinOS :zorin:, but it does have it's moments of frustration. Usually when I'm feeling like trying something "new". Zorin's UI is based on Gnome, but Zorin has kinda a "take your time" approach to it's UI. This makes things really solid, but the latest version of Zorin is based on Gnome 46, which is already over two years old. There's no expectation of updating their Gnome version until ZorinOS 19, which won't come out until 2027 at the soonest. Probably fall.

All in all, I think these "watermarks" are going to cause more problems than they solve. I don't think most people walking around in the general public can tell if something is AI generated or not. Even fewer can tell AI generated text that's had even a light editing done to it. The last thing we need now is some infantile attempt at marking text giving them bad information. Just my 2 cents.

sounds like it's probably going to be even worse. Further, a good percentage of takes I've seen regarding this kind of "watermark" seem to think this is flagging text that is generated by AI, but that's not what it does. A 10,000 word paper entirely written by a human will have a watermark if the human asks for a grammar check. The wrong impression can be easy to reach here. Even further, it doesn't even work on shorter text. No one is going to have a watermark for a social media post. 2/?

2026-08-17 16:21:01 UTC

AI text watermarks kinda concern me. Let's get something out in the open first. I don't really write, and what I do write, I don't use AI for. I understand how these things work, and while I understand the possibility might be slim, I'm concerned about false positives. If I DO write something and I use words that are atypical, am I going to get flagged? Also, the way this "watermark" works is kinda shit. AI detectors are notoriously garbage, and this

@nprofile…ypfx I expect because it's part of the migration process. The video starts with Google in Chrome, and ends with Startpage in Vivaldi. Neither search engine actually gets used in the video though.

A bit of unsolicited advice from a 50+ year old:
Lift with the legs, not the back. Really.

This asshole acts like we can't see what he's already done with CBS. The apple didn't fall far from the tree with this piece of work....

@nprofile…jmep Know the feeling. My first meeting of the day was a 30 minute discussion about a password reset. It wasn't even a fun password, just a standard account. No mission critical services or anything.

Just watched #Supergirl. Didn't hate it. It was definitely better than the last Supergirl movie I saw.

Really sad to see this, but there's so much of what @nprofile…ucup wrote in this post that I can relate to. If you're someone in the toot.community community and want to join #Fosstodon, drop me a DM. I'm happy to hook you up with an invite.

Some people seem legitimately surprised #Fauci pleaded the Fifth. It seemed pretty obvious the whole point in having him testify was to entrap him. Comments made by #RandPaul and others leading up to the hearing made it obvious. They were planning on throwing him in prison for the rest of his life if they asked him what time it was and his watch was off by a minute. Since Biden already pardoned him for anything in the pre-Trump era, something "new" is all they have.

The part of writing I spend the most time on is probably staring at the blinking cursor with absolutely nothing on the screen, wondering what the heck I'm supposed to be writing about.

@nprofile…7hy7 Absolutely. It's something I just don't understand to be honest. Journalists should be calling this stuff out, but investors just keep throwing money at him. I'm not a big fan of Bezos, but I can get a bag of cat food or a charging cable for my phone in a matter of hours without ever leaving my house. He's an asshole, but his stuff actually works. Musk has more money, but he can't say the same.

@nprofile…vuzn If I were to guess, I'd say that the chances of the US going bankrupt is actually higher with AI and robots. 1000% without AI and robots, 10000% with them.

@nprofile…j0el On his best day. Most days, I'd bet on the 8 Ball before Musk. At least the 8 Ball is pseudo-random. Musk is actively lying to us.

@nprofile…arfv Well, DOGE was a whole other thing. If you see how many of the departments directly impacted by DOGE were also interacting with one of his companies, the crossover is incredibly suspicious to say the least. It wasn't about what those in government (and Musk) claimed it was about.

@nprofile…njch Ya, this was the second article about Musk that I read in a row, and that probably push my tolerances. The other was how he promised to have half the country covered my self driving robotaxies by mid 2025. The man lies and makes promises he can't keep and then just lies again. He's not hoping to find a pearl. He's claiming he's already found it and trying to pay for dinner with it.

#Musk: "We are 1,000% going to go bankrupt as a country and fail as a country, without AI and robots."
This is the shit that annoys me. We NEED AI and robots or we're doomed! Coincidentally, #Elon sells #AI and robots. I don't think AI is evil and should be avoided at all costs. I think it has its uses if handled properly, but I also think #ElonMusk is full of shit and just trying to add even more money to his coffers. He'll say what he thinks needs to be said to do it.
