European besties struggling with the heat - small bits of advice from an Indian whose home is optimized to stay cool:
1. Remove the rugs ! Those will insulate your floor. If your floor allows for it, lightly mop with plain water for more cooling.
2. Paint your roof white, or place reflectors on your roof. Better still, solar panel your roof.
3. Switch to thin curtains.
4. Ceiling fans FTW! Table fans if those are too much work.
Small immediate steps that'll help in the moment.

The last industrial revolution produced cheap copies of the real Bengali muslin cloth and since the real deal was too slow, too "expensive" required too many trained artisans, it has been lost. Sure, there are revival movements trying to study old cloth and trying recreate it. But the cheap copy flooding the market necessarily meant a loss of skill. Similar thing happened to the true Damascus steel as well, didn't it? 1/2

I can afford the money, sure, but the humiliation ritual demanded by Western countries just makes me want to plan a vacation in an Asian country. Perhaps I should take my vacation budget to African nations as well.
(This rant was brought to you today because my neighbour, who is literally 81 years old, is filling a visa application - his son lives in the UK - and we uploaded the pictures of every page of his three passports (from past many decades) into the visa website).

2026-05-24 16:06:18 UTC

Travel the world if you can afford it!
For an Indian citizen, a UK visa requires you to take a picture of every passport you've ever had, including the blank pages.
US visa requires you to go to stay in a metro City overnight - they take biometrics on day 1 and interview on day 2.
Schengen visa requires you to show hotel bookings for every single day and a six month bank transaction history ( Yes, every single transaction).
All of them require income tax returns for the past three years.

I can grumble about certain aspects of teaching all day every day but at the end of it I love these gremlin children and I love Physics and every time a concept clicks for them I can practically see a comic-style light bulb switch on in their head and I am never getting out, am I?

2025-12-11 10:25:43 UTC

<Rant> Am I just dumb, or is everything difficult? CLOSING a simple social media account is hard. Getting a banking query answered requires "talking" to 84 AI agents, none of whom understand what you need. A wrong phone bill will never be corrected. I can't even invest my own money overseas. Trying to buy anything leads to ads and spam calls. THIS is the age of convenience we were sold?? </Rant>

These women were desperately making themselves pretty, earning well and still managing a home, just to land a man. And their options were men so demanding that even they gave up. The men literally wanted a 19th century wife who could also pay the bills. And now the same dudes are crying on the internet. Conservative men deserve the loneliness. 4/4

2025-06-09 09:44:14 UTC

- reply

The "male loneliness epidemic" was preceded by the loneliness of women, who wanted to have a life just one notch better than their mothers. They never expected egalitarian marriages, just one step ahead of the extreme misogyny that their mums faced, and were summarily denied. Now older, they've realized how much better their lives look as compared to their peers in full tradwife roles. But no, they are the "aging like milk","unwanted" ,"left behind" women. BS. 3/n

After trying for an entire decade, the daughter of a family friend , let's call her "P" - simply gave up. She's a doctor, and every guy she met up with wants her to be progressive enough to earn a lot and sleep with him before they are married, but traditional enough to center her entire life around him - moves cities if required, bear 2 children, look after the household and the elders. P is just one of many.
Several others, now in their late 30s or early 40s have simply given up. 2/n

2025-06-09 09:37:51 UTC

This is going to be a rant, sorry.
A vast majority of Indian marriages are arranged. (At least to some degree). And most traditional homes DO want their child to be married. Yet I see many of the women of my generation (many of them 40+) who have never been married. THESE ARE WOMEN FROM TRADITIONAL HOMES, FROM A PART OF THE WORLD WHICH STRUGGLES WITH THE WORST GENDER RATIO. This is not for the lack of trying- their parents have looked for multiple suitable matches. 1/n

Defending teens is the hill that I'll die on. No, they don't speak funny. Every era has its own slang. "Tubular" used to mean "cool" in the 80s, remember?
No, they're not illiterate. They're used to audiobooks because those are widely available. Instead of questioning the system that left their parents so exhausted and underpaid that convenience food and screens as babysitters became normal, we're blaming kids who are inhereting the world that was already broken. Leave 'em kids alone.

However, I have myself been in an abusive relationship in my late teens/early 20s - and I had resented friends pointing it out because it felt so judgy, like I was being punished for having a boyfriend by my friends (while also being punished by my then- boyfriend for being myself). So. How do I approach this? Send wisdom.

2025-05-31 14:40:02 UTC

Alright fam, serious talk - how do you approach a friend who seems to be stuck in a bad relationship? The usual way is to not interfere at all - which is the path I have taken so far - but it has ended badly on at least two counts. Which is to say, two of my friends who seemed to be in bad relationships weren't just in bad relationships, they were in abusive ones. And it feels horrible to think that I should've taken my intuition seriously and told them that we are here for them. 1/2

I need some legal advice fam. I've started entertaining the idea that we might want to buy a house in the coming years. I tried the usual websites ( MagicBricks, 99acres, nobroker etc).... And they're flat out terrible. I wonder if we can take action against these sites, because they're clearly engaging in false advertising- I don't think that the apartments that I showed interest in are actually up for sale at all. This is just a front to sell our data. Have received so many spam calls.

yes, there's an increase in self-employed women, but that's not because entrepreneurship is easier - it's because many work spaces are actively hostile to women are they are figuring out that they're better off making it on their own.

I find it mentally restorative to be in nature, and very critical of big pharma. Folks sometime misinterpret this and think that I'll be into their woo woo version of "medicine". Your "healing crystals" were mined from the Earth in the same exploitative manner. Homeopathy pills are not made in fairtrade factories. My country became free of polio due to a free government run vaccination program. My problem is with the capitalist structure in which a basic necessity is sold for profit.

Things that I think will become common due to climate change:
1. Rest of the world ( or at least, low income Western people) will adopt asian-style bucket bathing due to water shortages. Communities will invest in grey water recycling.
2. Guerrilla gardening will become more common, with people trying to reintroduce wild native plants to salvage urban landscape. Lawns will become less common.
3. Countries with rare Earth metals will undergo hostile takeover by corporations.
