Building web apps became fun again with Coding Assistants. As someone who cut his teeth with front-end, enjoy building and polishing interfaces the most, and never cared much for the repetitive labor of specifying sensible-sounding API endpoints and data schema for CRUD app no.145, it's so nice to not have to worry about that part of the labor and focus on what I love.
Next thing on the agenda is to learn how to deploy quickly and safely, and write some tools for the agent to automate that. A prototypical app a day feels quite within reach if that's achieved. #LLM

Shower thought: despite difference in their intention, many movements can be described as "anti-technology". Examples: anti-vax, anti-AI, anti-nuclear, anti-fossil-fuel, anti-GMO.
And technologies are shifting objects. The nuclear energy today is vastly different from what it was 60 years ago.
So in principle it would not make sense for any of these movements to hold a black-and-white position where the subject of their criticism is always bad. Their positions ought to be constantly re-evaluated depending on how the technology is developed and deployed at that moment.
This applies to those in the pro-camp as well.

I started learning cursive 2 weeks ago. Wow, I can't believe how much my writing has improved.
Learning a mechanical skill is such an empowering experience. I wonder if it can be a remedy for mood disorders.

Thanks. It's pretty fascinating to learn about academics from 20 years ago speculating about these linguistic oddities.
The theory speculated in the first link was what I disagreed with. At the end of the second link, the author quoted a guest speculating that this error was made from MT programs. Neither article stated that Babel Fish transliterated gan to Fuck.
It would be cool to dig out the cause of this mistranslation. I think the MT programs of that era can probably still be found. They would likely be running on Windows XP.

Where did the post explain that babelfish transliterates gan to fuck?
The first link included this text:
> The more likely story, as given by a Sinologist going by the handle "xiaolongnu" in this guest post, is the reliance in China on dictionaries claiming to provide "real idiomatic American English."
Which is the explanation I disagreed with.

2025-07-22 23:23:08 UTC

- reply

The explanation in the blogpost seems unlikely. 1) Growing up in China I was not aware of any popular dictionaries that specifically offered American English translation. 2) Even if these dictionaries exist, I was not aware of any strong preference for one type of translation over another. If the signage came from the U.S., then I could see a Chinese non-English-speaking owner deciding to seek out American English translation. But this came from a hotel in the inland province of Shaanxi. There's no reason for them to care about a detail so small.

This particular combination is replicated on my instance. It seems that the app refuses to combine some of the combinations.

I wonder why polymaths are a lot more common before modernity. It probably mostly has to do with inequality restricting opportunity to education to only the leisure class.

The author of https://killsixbilliondemons.com/ also hides links to music in the comic image's alt text. Though I guess in that case there's also a "soundtrack of a movie" side.

Townsfolks in Tokyo: where can people go to find indie game designers? Are there any new gathering space after [@picopicocafe](https://mastodon.social/@picopicocafe ) closed?
Some game designer & crafting friends from Shanghai just moved there and are having a hard time finding the right ENG-speaking community.
