Someone I care about is planning to travel to the US within the year. Any suggestions for safety? They're about as vanilla as it gets demographically - married, white, hetero, cis - but I still worry about ICE and friends.
Current thinking:
* Work laptop only, with nothing personal on it.
* Burner phone with *nothing* except a benign work-only WhatsApp account.
* Several stashes of emergency cash, well hidden.
* No firearm (AFAIK the law in the state they're traveling to permits only residents or citizens to carry).
* Prescription meds accompanied by prescription *and* letter from Australian GP.
* Different duress codes worked out in advance with friends, family, colleagues.
* Several emergency contacts in the US worked out in advance.
Other thoughts? What am I missing?

Anyone else experiencing panel scuffing from their Framework laptop keyboard?
In fairness it's not only the Framework, all recent laptops I've owned have this problem. My older laptops - X200 and X220 - never did because the depth of the bezel ensured the panel never touched the keyboard.

@nprofile…u76z She spends much of her time with the existing animals - so I doubt that'll be an issue. More concerned about "things I wish I knew about rats but learned the hard way".
We had pet rats as Uni students but I've forgotten almost everything about them, except for how they used to sit on our shoulders while we were working ❤️

@nprofile…u76z I gather you have pet rats - any advice you'd be willing to share?
Our nine year old daughter wants to add rats to her menagerie that already includes a greyhound, three silkie hens, and (temporarily) her Grandma's little dog while Grandma is recovering from surgery.

Weird. On FreeBSD 15.0, my new Jabra headset works perfectly with the wireless USB dongle. Plug it in, it's picked up as an audio sink and source, and everything Just Works. On Linux Mint (which I still use for gaming and DRM media), the headset reports that it's connected ... then immediately disconnects again :/ No idea why and haven't had the time to debug it.
This further confirms my general impression of FreeBSD and Linux ... Linux distros have much broader software and hardware support, but tend to be a bit jankier. Whereas FreeBSD has a smaller set of software and hardware support, but when it works, it's stable and remains so.

Welp, it had to happen eventually. My beloved and once-renovated Sennheiser Presence ( gemini://duncan.bayne.id.au/gemlog/2025-04-28-refurbishing-sennheiser-presence.gmi ) finally went to the great e-waste recycling centre in the sky; the microphone is as dead as a doornail.
Now I'm looking for a replacement. My wishlist, in descending order :)
1. Noise canceling *in the mic* so I can take calls from anywhere and not inconvenience the people on the other end with background noise. This was the Presence's killer feature, and the reason I loved it to bits. I bought it while consulting so I could take client calls from anywhere and still make it a pleasant experience for them. Busy city street? Car with open windows? No problem.
2. USB *and* Bluetooth. I'd like to use the replacement device on my phone, FreeBSD PC, laptop, etc.
3. Noise canceling on the speakers. Less important (the Presence didn't have it), but I'm thinking it'd be nice to combine a few devices into one. If I could listen to music on the same headset I make calls with, that'd be grand.
4. USB-C. The Presence was my last EDC micro-USB device.
I *think* some of the Jabra headsets may qualify, but I can't work out their bloody product matrix, and *particularly* dislike the idea of accidentally buying one of their "MS Teams integrated" models 🤢 I've asked Jabra support to recommend a model; we'll see how that goes.
Anyone got any advice / suggestions?

While I'm whinging about this.
The staffer in question positioned herself between me and the exit, *after* I'd paid. She was also an older woman about a foot shorter than me and probably 30kg lighter.
Had I *actually* been a shoplifter and inclined to leg it at that point, what I presume is store or chain policy would have put her at quite significant physical risk, even from me just flattening her on the way out.
This just seems like such a disastrously poor policy.

2026-05-13 08:04:09 UTC

So apparently Aldi would rather refund me for my groceries, than let me leave with my purchases without first taking a look in my backpack.

Really do detest stores that treat their customers like potential thieves.

In today's "Computers Were A Mistake" news (cc/ @nprofile…e6sg who introduced me to the phrase) ...
Ruby and Golang by default parse YAML differently.
If you forget to quote a SHA string in your YAML, and you're unlucky and the SHA appears to be a number in scientific notation, Ruby will parse it as a string but Golang will parse it as a *float*.
Thus the hilarious CI error I saw today:

FreeBSD folks ... I'm trying to run two Gemini capsules on the same IP address, for two different domains, on two different ports.

@nprofile…vf35 It's a difficult one. Because of the walled-garden nature of push notifications on mobile (both Android and iOS), you need a central notification server, and *someone* has to pay for that.
However I was just quoted USD3,900 p/a to run a small private instance (for friends and family) with around 30 users.
I looked into Zulip - it's promising, but in the end you either forego push notifications, or pay per seat like Mattermost.
Leaving aside the issue with suddenly imposing a 10k message limit on existing open source installations (boo, Mattermost) I don't blame the vendors here as much as I do Google and Apple.

2026-01-19 11:48:22 UTC

Turns out the Mostlymatter fork of Mattermost does what it says on the tin: provides a drop-in binary replacement that doesn't have the 10k message limit on self-hosted servers (!).

@nprofile…vdjy Several company owners and senior managers I know ensure that interactions with *all* staff are part of the recruitment process.
For example, checking in with the receptionist or executive assistant after the candidate has left, to see whether they treated people in those positions politely.
It's sad, but perhaps not surprising, to learn how many candidates fail that check by being utter dicks to people when they think they can get away with it.

Amazon search results are so, so, broken.
E.g. search for "electric skateboard", get pages of relevant results. Sort that search by average customer review, and get page after page of junk results, with actual electric skateboards finally turning up at page 6.
I assume what's going on here is that Amazon wants people only to buy from their chosen products, and so has intentionally broken all other sort options.

"Here reign the successors of the poor fishermen of Galilee; they have strangely forgotten their origin. I am astounded, as I recall their predecessors, to see these men loaded with gold and clad in purple, boasting of the spoils of princes and nations; to see luxurious palaces and heights crowned with fortifications, instead of a boat turned downward for shelter.
"We no longer find the simple nets which were once used to gain a frugal sustenance from the lake of Galilee, and ... to see worthless parchments turned by a leaden seal into nets which are used ... to catch hordes of unwary Christians. ...
"Instead of holy solitude we find a criminal host and crowds of the most infamous satellites; instead of soberness, licentious banquets; instead of pious pilgrimages, preternatural and foul sloth; instead of the bare feet of the apostles, the snowy coursers of brigands fly past us, the horses decked in gold and fed on gold, soon to be shod with gold, if the Lord does not check this slavish luxury. In short, we seem to be among the kings ... before whom we must fall down and worship, and who cannot be approached except presents be offered. O ye unkempt and emaciated old men, is it for this you laboured? Is it for this that you have sown the field of the Lord and watered it with your holy blood?"

Truly shocking NBN installation today at the Scout Hall.
Guy draped the cable on the neighbour's roof, and lied to my face about there being clearance. Had to get him back on the ladder to at least get 30cm or so clearance between the cable and their roof.
Also only finished at ~ 15:00, after turning up at 12:30 for an 08:00 - 12:00 window, and then having to leave immediately to get more equipment because it's a tricky job. Which, of course, I warned the ISP about up-front.
However! We finally have the ability to make and receive calls reliably at the hall \o/

So this is interesting, turns out a bunch of AI scraping traffic isn't from infected systems (as I'd thought) but apps and so on that bundle or are bundled with malware for money:
https://jan.wildeboer.net/2025/04/Web-is-Broken-Botnet-Part-2/
Mobile folks: how hard would it be to detect the presence of Infatica in .apks? Publish some sort of "hall of shame"?
Also, might there be any point in reporting to Google / Apple? I'd like to think that one of the benefits of a walled garden would be the ability to reject apps that feature this sort of malware. But honestly both Apple and Google are so far in to the AI bubble that they probably use the results themselves 🙄

Any FreeBSD / bhyve folks ever experienced this?
https://github.com/churchers/vm-bhyve/issues/592
I have everything set up the same (I think!) as my other two machines running bhyve, but on this particular machine bhve exits immediately with error code 71. Nothing obvious in the logs, either :/

@nprofile…60lz It's not a crisis per se; it's a crisis because our taxpayer funded welfare systems are predicated upon (roughly) current age demographics.
I'm operating under the assumption that by the time I'm of retirement age there will either be no state pension, or it will be very aggressively means tested.

Mastodon hive mind ... have you ever seen clients with ludicrously large user agents strings?
We're seeing requests (more than a thousand, so far) with user agent strings many kilobytes in size, as large as 8,119 bytes so far.
I've filed it in the "cursed clients" bucket and am ignoring it for now. But it's so weird I thought perhaps someone else has seen it. Buggy browser? Some sort of bot / scraper / crawler? 🤔

"Contrary to our expectations, our findings indicate that AI adoption is negatively impacting software delivery performance. We see that the effect on delivery throughput is small, but likely negative (an estimated 1.5% reduction for every 25% increase in AI adoption). The negative impact on delivery stability is larger (an estimated 7.2% reduction for every 25% increase in AI adoption)".

Turns out the Framework's HDMI module is perfectly supported in FreeBSD 😁 Here's my Framework Laptop Ryzen 13 running on my wife's desk, hooked up to her HDMI monitor and Logitech keyboard and mouse.

Can confirm that the microSD module for the Framework Laptop also Just Works™ on FreeBSD as well. Currently using it to write a fresh Home Assistant image to a microSD card.

* WiFi upgrade caused LIFX integration with Home Assistant to fail, necessitating HA reinstall.
* Scouts training sign up Web app (partially) broken, necessitating workaround.
* Phone keyboard crashed necessitating restart.
* Chromecast crashed necessitating restart.
All in the last two hours.

Handy quality of life tip for FreeBSD ...
YouTube Music works *without* Linux-only DRM crap, and tunemymusic.com will transfer all your playlists from Spotify to YouTube Music for USD4.99 (it's a monthly subscription, but you only need the one month assuming you're just migrating).
So I'm currently running FreeBSD on my desktop and laptop, YouTube Music running in Firefox, listening on my Bluetooth ANC headphones via a 3.5mm -> BT adaptor.

Want to use Bluetooth headphones on a FreeBSD system that has a 3.5mm audio socket?
You can with a Bluetooth transmitter! I'm using this model, after buying a different (cheaper) unit that had unacceptably poor quality.
https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/aw/d/B0CJY56XG3
Just plug it, switch to TX mode, and your Bluetooth headphones *should* auto-pair with it (how, I don't know ...)

I just discovered htmlq (think jq but for HTML not JSON) and it's great!
for url in $(cat ~/tmp/urls.txt)
do
echo $url
curl --silent -H "Accept: text/html" $url | htmlq "meta[property^='og:']"
echo
done
... generates me a nice summary of the OpenGraph tags for each URL in urls.txt.

Turns out ACPI support on FreeBSD is a WIP on the Framework 13 Ryzen, with progress reported as late as last month. Needs work on both the sleep support itself, and USB4 implementation.
https://community.frame.work/t/acpi-sleep-framework-13-ryzen-freebsd-14-2/61925
It's painful living with a laptop without suspend, but OTOH, I'm pretty confident it'll get addressed given the FreeBSD Foundation's new focus on laptop support (with support from AMD!).

@nprofile…sr9k I remember trying to get Cypress running on FreeBSD years ago, and giving up. Don't remember why, but that and some issues dealing with SSO put me off Cypress, when I was originally quite keen on it.

2024-12-17 13:54:10 UTC

Okay so making good progress:
* Dual-booting to Linux Mint 22 and FreeBSD 14.2, with encrypted homedirs on both.
* Rebuilt drm-61-kmod from source on FreeBSD, to fix bug where virtual consoles were blank. (This will soon be fixed in 14.2)
Remaining issues with FreeBSD:
1. PEFS encrypted homedir doesn't play nicely with graphical login via xdm. Logging in to console then using `startx` for now, but want to fix this as it's irritating.
2. ACPI still busted. Have to manually power off even after a `halt -p` has finished, and suspend doesn't work.
Most stuff just worked out of the box though. Intel WiFi, AMD GPU, USB-C Ethernet, sound, webcam, microphone ... altogether a thoroughly pleasant experience.

First issue with FreeBSD on the Framework 13 Ryzen - ACPI sleep not working.
https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/acpi-sleep-framework-13-ryzen-freebsd-14-2.96099/
I suspect it's a matter of waiting for driver support.
#freebsd #framework

2024-12-16 22:33:14 UTC

@nprofile…c2pf General thoughts on it: it needs no excuses[1]! It's a sturdy[2], fast, visually appealing, cost-effective laptop that just happens to also be upgradeable / repairable / expandable.
Compared with an M2 Macbook Pro I ran a while ago as a work machine, the speakers and battery life aren't as good. But they're certainly not _bad_, just not class-leading.
The keyboard and screen are nicer though. The matte 3:2 ratio screen in particular is lovely.
[1] Unlike some other open hardware like the PinePhone; with the best will in the world it's still like using a box of papercuts as a daily driver. You'd only do it for ideological reasons, whereas the Framework is Just Plain Good.
[2] Mine's nearly new but my wife has run one for a while now, with no issues.

2024-12-16 21:34:41 UTC

First FreeBSD 14.2 update for my AMD Framework 13 laptop ... the hot-swappable Ethernet module works out of the box 🎉 So, I can run my setup scripts while I wait for the Intel WiFi card to arrive. I've chucked it in the home server cabinet for now.

BrowserStack support is so good.
I was having some trouble running BrowserStack local testing from within a bhyve VM.
One of their support engineers hopped on a Zoom call with me this afternoon. We "fixed" it in the course of debugging - a port wasn't being forwarded that needed forwarding. We did that during the call (it surfaces diagnostic information) and everything started working.

@nprofile…sr9k Well I can say so far that I'm a _very_ happy customer - but I haven't begun the journey of configuring FreeBSD, yet. Going to wait for the Intel WiFi card to turn up first.
As far as Linux support goes, it's great! My wife and I both chose the 13" Ryzen models. I'm running mine with non-OEM 2TiB SSD (1TiB for Linux Mint for DRM media and gaming, 1TiB for FreeBSD for everything else), and 64GiB RAM. The system *flies* - really, really, fast.
Build quality is great, assembly of the DIY kits is super easy, and the 3:2 aspect ratio is great. Plus the screen is matte!
I've been running refurbished ex-corporate ThinkPads for *years* - it took a lot to cause me to change. But (so far) I'm happy I did :)
