My new job has me building out a high touch #IT team for a quickly growing company that puts me quickly out of my depth. I’m hiring good people but slowly and not many. I currently have the most experience and understanding of the work and that’s a problem.
What are good #sysadmin communities that aren’t Reddit?

Foone is a treasure that I’m better off for following. If you enjoy learning from reasonable people sharing their passions to make stuff who are actually pretty nice, then check them out, and consider helping them out.

The #openscad playground is amazing. It's openSCAD compiled to wasm and runs in your browser. I wonder if we could make a preview generator out of it 🤔
> It defaults to the Manifold backend so it's **super** fast!

Big layoffs across Microsoft (including GitHub) today. https://www.theverge.com/news/659401/microsoft-layoffs-three-percent-workforce
The best thing you can do is help your peers find good jobs that match their abilities and interests. As far as I’m concerned, that is your duty as a citizen. Keep your peers afloat.
IN tech people ask me how can I be a good engineer? HELP PEOPLE FIND JOBS. it’s the best skill.
if I’m gonna generalize it; Support one another as your first job.

We have CEOs telling junior developers to not bother learning how to code, try to vibe code. That’s scary! You don’t learn much with vibe coding. Learning is the best part of the job!
I tell my junior engineers to not outsource their learning. AI can’t do the modeling, the architecture, the understanding. Can it do boilerplate? Sorta! But the job isn’t writing boiler plate.
We knew this way back with the no silver bullets essay on incidental vs necessary complexity.

When this bubble bursts, and the fraction of software that was created during it that remains useful will need stabilization. At some point the infrastructure that hasn’t been maintained will need rebuilding. Many engineers will be hired back again. But the people with the skills will be fewer and older.

When you’re young or new, every technology is new, it’s hard to see the difference. You play along with wonder instead of fear, you feel valued, you haven’t seen the cycle before.

I’m tagging these posts so people who filter them out or subscribe can see them or not. I’m also calling LLMs AI because we’ve publicly lost that distinction but I’m honestly referring to this new product or feature category rather than a particular technology.

My friends who have spent a lifetime learning how to make stable change on critical systems will be forced to adapt to help stabilize the tools that lost them their jobs.
Some of them will find a way through, some of them will join the Cobal programmers I have met in other industries throughout the world.
They have told me they were let go because they were getting old, or didn’t want to change. I wonder if it was a similar hype cycle that I was too new or young to see.

CEOs “any advancement in efficiency will reduce the need for jobs”
I’ve never seen so many of my friends out of work on the promise of efficiency. I’ve never seen so many forced to work on fulfilling that promise. I’ve never seen so many of my friends out of work.
The job are in “ai” and they are not good jobs, they are not stable jobs, they don’t pay enough money, they pay with “promise”.

Is there a Linux based streaming speaker application that I can hook some good speakers to?
My sonos play 1 are not functioning as I’d like but are functioning as designed. I would stick a raspberry pie under each one if it meant they were reliable and did what I wanted when I wanted them to do it. I would gladly pay money to never to use the Sonos app again.

I got some troublesome filament and ... What's this? Am I over extruding? I'm not really seeing that on the sides. Most of what I get is fine but this bottom is trashed and I have no idea why.

She attributes this behavior to the development of Cobal, they didn’t have funding for their own computers so they had to steal time on other peoples. And to do that, they needed a common language that they could compile to the byte code for all the different computers.

her philosophy was to steal anything that wasn’t nailed down in order to get the job done, her small underfunded team in the Pentagon (where her team developed Cobal) flew a 🏴‍☠️ and had a collection of office equipment from all over the place. Apparently it was pretty common since official requisitions took forever.
