The heat must be getting to me. I thought about that song by the band Foreigner called "Hot Blooded" and realized that they used Fahrenheit instead of Celsius:
"I'm hot blooded.
Check it and see.
I got a fever of a hundred and three."
I did some math and wondered why they didn't try to rhyme 39.44 Celsius instead. (snort)
According to Internet sources: "The UK Meteorological Office officially switched from Fahrenheit to Celsius (then known as Centigrade) on 15 October 1962. While Celsius became the primary unit for weather forecasting at that time, Fahrenheit was retained as a secondary measure for several years, with the BBC eventually dropping it in the 1970s and 80s."
The song came out in 1978. So, perhaps the British and USAmerican band mates were all agreed that the rhyme scheme was better with 103 than 39.44. I imagine it was a close call and that there were many heated arguments about it with the British band members intent on fully switching to Celsius but the American band members remaining inflexible and reliant on Fahrenheit. So glad I figured that out. 😂

Pan (A double villanelle by Oscar Wilde)
I
O goat-foot God of Arcady!
This modern world is grey and old,
And what remains to us of thee?
No more the shepherd lads in glee
Throw apples at thy wattled fold,
O goat-foot God of Arcady!
Nor through the laurels can one see
Thy soft brown limbs, thy beard of gold,
And what remains to us of thee?
And dull and dead our Thames would be,
For here the winds are chill and cold,
O goat-foot God of Arcady!
Then keep the tomb of Helice,
Thine olive-woods, thy vine-clad wold,
And what remains to us of thee?
Though many an unsung elegy
Sleeps in the reeds our rivers hold,
O goat-foot God of Arcady!
Ah, what remains to us of thee?
II
Ah, leave the hills of Arcady,
Thy satyrs and their wanton play,
This modern world hath need of thee.
No nymph or Faun indeed have we,
For Faun and nymph are old and grey,
Ah, leave the hills of Arcady!
This is the land where liberty
Lit grave-browed Milton on his way,
This modern world hath need of thee!
A land of ancient chivalry
Where gentle Sidney saw the day,
Ah, leave the hills of Arcady!
This fierce sea-lion of the sea,
This England lacks some stronger lay,
This modern world hath need of thee!
Then blow some trumpet loud and free,
And give thine oaten pipe away,
Ah, leave the hills of Arcady!
This modern world hath need of thee!

I mean, obviously they can't boost them and only the person's followers can see them so there will be less opportunity for engagement than public toots. But I wonder if some people are less inclined to respond by tapping the star or commenting when they see followers-only toots. What think ye all?

Earlier this week I saw a conversation where one person was complaining that another person had called them out for posting a statement that someone else posted before them without giving proper attribution to the original poster (the OP). This person responded vehemently that once you put something on the internet, it becomes public domain and no one has copyrights. That is a spurious argument and avoids the issue entirely. While it's true that someone might have the same idea as another person, it's also true that there is no reason to take someone else's idea and state it so that you give the impression that the idea is yours alone. If I write a poem and share it, you do not have the right to take that poem and post it without attribution. But more importantly, you have no self respect if you do that and you think you're not good enough to be able to write your own damn poem, you complete jack ass.

When I was a child (single digits) I thought it was called Star Track and that my father, who spoke with an accent, was simply mispronouncing it. He would say, 'Star Trek is on." And I would say, "Star Track" as I ran over to the den to watch. Then, one day I read the title of the show on the television screen and realized there was a word spelled t-r-e-k. So I turned to the hundred-pound hard cover dictionary to find out what it meant. I remember telling my father that it was TREK not TRACK. He responded sarcastically, "Oh, really?"

Road Work Ahead! No U-turn!

Observations from an evening walk in April
Five dark little birds wait on the gravel road. They take wing into the safety of the wood just as the border collie arrives to sniff at them.
Countless cardinals calling in the crepuscule, as if they don't stand out enough in the sunlight. They need to be noticed even as the light fades.
We walk beneath the reign of trees. We gaze up at the purple sky as the stars make ready.
A lone hound beys in the distance.

When you live surrounded by woods and marauding deer, there is no tick repellent that truly works. The ticks awaken throughout the winter the moment temperatures rise above freezing. By spring they are battle ready and hungry. They jump at life. They suck at life, literally. Chemical sprays don't fool them for long. Natural remedies do little. How can we stop them? Can we make them fear us somehow? Can we make them loathe our company? My personal war on ticks has gone on for many years. Maybe one day I can outsmart this symbolic enemy. Until that day, I remain vigilant and without mercy.
