I was using my #Kaweko Sport #FountainPen, and noticed that it was making an odd rattling sound. I opened it up to investigate and found that the converter had somehow come detached. Fortunateluy, the converter doesn't hold a ton of ink, so it wasn't as big a mess to clean up as I would've expected. Besides, are you really a fountain pen user if you don't have ink all over your fingers? I have to say, though, I'm impressed at the capacity of the feed. It had been rattling for some time without any noticeable loss of ink.

Just saw a YouTube video where a guy took some wood ash, water, and a bunch of other common ingredients and made soap with it. That's cool and all, but then he said it was "chemical free".
Setting aside my typical argument about how a "chemical free" product is objective nonsense... my dude, you literally just made lye, which is a pretty harsh chemical.

@nprofile…m7l3 Question about the HIPAA compliance of telehealth sessions: what is actually required for that? My last therapist used Microsoft Teams, which I was rather nonplussed about. I'm sure Microsoft is now probably training AI on my therapy sessions.
Don't get me wrong. The therapist was genuinely helpful and otherwise great. I definitely got benefit from those sessions. I wanted to suggest using a Jitsi server that I host myself, but didn't because even though I knew it was legit, I knew it sounded scammy. It's the same thing with my doctor who insists on emailing forms in plaintext.
I'm sure they know way more about their respective fields than I can ever hope to. This is something they've spent literal years studying, after all.
...but when it comes to infosec...
For added clarity, I'm in Canada, so the rules probably differ.

@nprofile…ugpy @nprofile…f50z @nprofile…vrsc It's more computationally expensive than writing a simple script to do the same thing. You just don't notice it because modern computers are so stupidly powerful.
There is a big caveat to this statement though: the latter requires the user to know how to write such a script, or to have one convieniently handy. Plus, you have to weigh the effort of writing such a script against the amount of work it's going to save you.
Personally, I wouodn't trust an LLM not to hallucinate and subtly corrupt my work in a non-obvious way, but that's a judgement call and you might choose differently.

So, for a while now, after hearing a bunch of #ActuallyAutistic individuals talking about their experiences, I've been asserting that I wouldn't be shocked to learn that I was on the autistic spectrum.
Today, for shits and giggles, I decided to take the AQ and RAADS-R tests, and scored "very strong alignment with autistic traits" on both. While I'm not shocked to learn this, I have to admit, I didn't expect to score that high.

I think I've been able to pin down what it is that I like about #Emacs so much. When I first started using computers, I was using a TRS-80. If you didn't have a cartridge inserted, It'd boot directly into BASIC where you could program the machine directly. That wasn't a bug, it was a feature.
Modern computing seems to do its best to hide all that stuff away. Everything is treated more like a simple (albeit specialized) appliance, not a powerful machine that can be made to do literally anything you want. Instead, it's about what the various software vendors want it to do.
Emacs by contrast not only gives you all the tools you need to modify it in any way you want, but actively encourages you to do so. It feels a lot more like the computing systems of old. Perhaps that's not for everyone. There's a reason computers were so niche back in the early days. Most people just didn't care to learn what was going on under the hood, and that's valid. There's something to be said for a tool that just works effortlessly out of the box. Also, to be clear, you don't strictly speaking need to dig into the internals to use Emacs, but I prefer for my technology to serve me, and I'm willing to put the effort in to make that happen.
That's why it's a good fit for me.

Little by little I've been going more and more analog. I still track every little thing I need to do in my #OrgMode system to help manage my #ADHD, but that list itself can get a little overwhelming. I've started combing over that list in the morning, picking out the most critical things for that day and writing them down on a paper checklist in a small notebook I keep in my pocket. The notebook has the advantage of not distracting me with a thousand notifications every time I'm trying to do something productive.
Plus, I just really like having an excuse to put a nice #FountainPen and ink to paper.

This probably won't help me in my current job search, but is it worth learning COBOL? I've heard that there are still a bunch of critical systems out there that use it, and that it's hard to find COBOL devs these days.

I also have a reasonable grasp of #HTML, #JavaScript, #SQL, #Python, #Lua, #Linux system administration, #bash scripting, #Perl, #AWK, some #Lisp (common, scheme, and emacs), and probably several others I've forgotten to mention.
I am not necessarily looking for something in tech. I just need something stable. I have done everything from software development, to customer support, to factory work, though my current circumstances make in-person work more difficult than remote work. I recently got a #Sailor #Hokoro dip pen, and much to my chagrin have found that several of my #FountainPen inks do not work well in it. It's almost like the ink refuses to be picked up by the nib/feed.
Has anyone else encountered this? Is there a solution?

One of the things nobody tells you about wearing #glasses is how annoying it is to keep them clean. I had resigned myself to the fact that there would just always be some degree of smearing in my field of vision. Try as I might, I could never get them quite as clean as the day I got them.
Then I got an ultrasonic cleaner for my #FountainPen hobby and realized I could use it to clean my glasses as well.

I know I can order a replacement nib assembly relatively inexpensively, but I don't know if the thread in the pen body is intact either.
It looks like when I lost the cap I didn't clean the pen out properly before pitting it ib storage and there was still some ink sitting in it for a few years. I don't know if that was what caused the damage.
My local pen shop apparently has an AL in stock, and I happen to have gotten a gift card for them for Christmas that would cover the difference between the Diamond 580 and the AL. Perhaps it's time to upgrade?

How old does a #FountainPen have to be before it's considered #vintage? The very first one I ever bought back in 2012 (a Parker GT Urban) doesn't seem to be available any more, though it is still available in ballpoint. Still, maybe I'm just getting old but 2012 doesn't feel very "vintage" to me.
I mean, it's kinda scuffed up because I was a newbie who had no idea how to take care of it, but I'm not looking to sell it or anything. It's more of a curiosity, really.

So while the paper in this dollar store notebook is surprisingly good, I'm starting to see how it's not quite on the level of my Rhodia notepad. I am finally noticing some minor feathering and bleed through when I use some inks in my #FountainPen

Just "cleaned" one of my #FountainPens and had the disassembled parts drying on a clean tissue. Found a small spot of ink where the nib was resting. Guess I've got to clean it a little better...

So, my local-ish pen shop has a collection of these Korean inks (Wearingeul) that I've not seen before. Just bought a bottle of Enki and can't wait to get it home to play with it.

Katy bought a bread slicer, so obviously I had to make a loaf of #sourdough #today to test it out.
Why does it have to take so long to cool?

Just got my sample ink pack in the mail, and I've got to say Diamine Ruby Blues might be my new favourite ink. The photos online don't do it justice. The ink changes colour depending on the angle you look at it from. Is this a more common thing than I realize?

TIL:
data Foo = Bar { val :: Int } | Baz { val :: Int }
is valid #Haskell. I wouldn't have thought you could define val twice like that.

Has anyone else been having troubles getting updates from @npub1y8a…5cy0's #Debian repository? The signing key seems to be expired.

I have come dangerously close to allowing myself to run out of coffee.
This will not do.

It rather amazes me the number of people who are suspicious of the pharma industry, who then turn around and put total and absolute faith in the supplement industry.
