oh, wonderful: littlefedi is spreading its wings and leaving its nest (=closed beta), apparently! there are now instructions how to deploy it and binaries have appeared - wohoo! really excited to give this a try! https://littlefedi.org/deploy.html

And in other news: it’s once again glue-up time. Remember: the IQ of any carpenter is reduced by 50% as soon as the glue bottle has been opened, so preparation is key. The process needs to be fool proof!

Surprisingly smooth. The only damper was the slow charging rate of the Dacia at three of the four (!) required stops. Instead of the theoretical maximum of 30kW it only charged with 13-20, thus nearly doubling the charging time. In the end it took us 10.5h for 580km (and about €38). Nice experiment but not keen on repeating it any time soon.

Given the notorious unreliability of trains in Germany these days and the current prices for gasoline I decided to use my trusty little Dacia with 25kWh battery to drive 600km to a small town in West Germany. If all goes according to plan, we’ll spend 6.5h driving and 3h charging. Fingers crossed.

@nprofile…zx3a @nprofile…v3ur fwiw, I have an electric car, own a house with PV and a carport, so ideal conditions BUT I never installed a wallbox. You don’t need it. If you can run a basic single phase cable to your parking space you’re good. I even deliberately charge only with 10 amps instead of the maximum 16 because it’s a) better for the battery health and b) allows me to maximize the PV usage.

@nprofile…q7ka I've reactivated VSCode last week in order to play with agentic coding and was immediately reminded of why I ditched it a year ago and returned to sublime text. however, I did notice also that I've kind of grown less fond of ST over the time and took the opportunity to give zed.dev a try (upon recommendation from colleagues) and after a week of using it daily I'm still very happy with it and haven't opened ST once during that time. so perhaps you might want to give it a go. For me it's still what ST was to me: not just a barebones editor but also not a full-grown IDE. YMMV

Making progress with designing the cabinet. Using STEP files from the manufacturer, I can confidently size and place the drawers and their fronts.
For the top drawer I even managed to create a working assembly that correctly simulates the actual sliding action.
Not too shabby for a free piece of software, if you ask me!

Designing a custom cabinet for a very tight and confined hallway for a client - being able to try out everything down to the millimeter *before* creating any sawdust is such a relief. The ability to use BIM, PartDesign and Assembly seamlessly all in the same software makes this rather nice.

As a diehard AI sceptic I'm delighted to find the odd useful application of these LLMs. In this case, writing tedious one-off #FreeCAD macros, that produce parametric sketches programmatically which then serve as foundation for "conventional" further processing i.e. padding, chamfering and finally CNC milling.

More good clean fun on the bike. Such a wonderful way to switch off, after a day at the computer.

@nprofile…vyue @nprofile…87ch IMHO bluesky is as decentralized as hybrid cars are electric. In other words it’s just a fig leaf.

@nprofile…7v9l Wonderful tips! The physical timers are a great idea. Putting them on my shopping list now (thus won’t forget to get some!)

Found this post but nobody figured anything out there, either https://www.reddit.com/r/applehelp/comments/125zpvb/super_strange_alarm_off_in_middle_of_night_on/?rdt=38432

Last night I got several loud alarms on my iphone, Several very loud beeps, perhaps four or five times but no alert or banner or any other indicator. After the first time I concluded I might have dreamt it but it happened three or four more times during the next few minutes after which I removed the phone from the bedroom (where it frankly doesn't belong anyway)... Anybody else have this in Germany? was this perhaps a malfunctioning regional alert?

@nprofile…lrlx Thanks! I’ve added it to my Pleroma instance social.tomster.org - I’m curious to see whether it will have a noticeable effect.

sehr schöner, wenn auch leicht deprimierender Text. “Meine Spülmaschine wurde übrigens als besonders leises Gerät beworben.”, “[…] niemand in der Firma wird aufstehen und sagen: Ist es wirklich das, was unsere Kundschaft will?” https://mas.to/@gabrielberlin/113791940972139267

#FreeCADFriday reconstructed a simple Clipart in Sketcher, parametricized the dimensions to match the length of the available lights, created the ring in the CNC and added some leftover 2x1 and created a Christmas star for our advent party. Quality times.

Using #FreeCAD to design a stool I now can use its assembly workbench to create and simulate the jig with which I plan to create the chamfered edges on the table saw. That's pretty damn neat, if I may say so myself...
