arriving in city 18 like
“let me get that can for you :)”
“drink the water! they put something in it to make you remember!”
“you, citizen! be on your way!”

we must never conflate zealots and purists with reasonable people whom we can treat with a little more respect at little cost to ourselves

i specifically chose "immigrant" because it's somewhat unexpected, and most affluent white people wouldn't choose to call themselves that, despite the term being accurate in the literal reading. it's also somewhat in tension with acknowledging the struggle of people who had it harder than me, but that's what this whole question is about.
i don't know what that bit about hegemonic discourse is supposed to mean. i don't really care about that.

that's exactly the train of thought that led me to this question. i'll say this: i haven't encountered anyone who made that assumption and then treated me like someone who was "stealing valor". i'll probably cross that bridge when i get to it, if ever.

calling myself a "white immigrant" in my bio might read kinda strange is what i'm thinking

i have a question. anyone is welcome to answer, though i'd especially appreciate POVs from immigrants with a visibly different ethnicity from the majority of their country of residence.
i moved from germany to france. no one here can tell i'm from germany until i open my mouth and speak somewhat broken french. should i call myself an immigrant on this platform? i feel like that term implies things about me that aren't necessarily true, but at the same time i do not want to call myself an "expat" because i don't want to put myself above anyone else who came to this country.
i am asking for opinions here, not dictionary definitions.

i think more people should know that jeff geerling is anti-abortion and anti-homosexuality – and used to be openly so. these days, it seems he'd prefer if people didn't notice, because his success playing the social media and oss game probably hinges somewhat on these things about him remaining in relative obscurity.
want proof? here's the URLs of two blog posts he has since deleted, but to my knowledge never made any public statement about. you can look these up in the web archive of your choice.
https://www.jeffgeerling.com/blog/2011/exodus-app-%E2%80%93-pulled-app-store
https://www.jeffgeerling.com/articles/religion/abortion-cases-of-rape
these aren't the only examples. feel free to go looking for more like this, if these aren't sufficiently abhorrent for you.
despite these views not being a secret, this man enjoys quite the reputation in tech circles, to the point that his ansible code finds me at my dayjob, introduced by people who likely haven't a clue what kind of a person he is, and that doesn't sit right with me.
