unpopular opinion: software developers were too comfortable for too long. they didn't unionize when everybody told them to. they didn't use the time they had when they were on top to implement meaningful safeguards for their jobs. and now llms are hitting their industry like a sledgehammer and they don’t know how to fight because they never did.
i don’t say that to blame them, it’s still their bosses who are the problem. but take it as a wake up call and unionize. better late than never.

not an original thought by any stretch but while self-hosting is getting easier and the tools get better every day i don’t think the goal should be for most people to host their own stuff but to build up small communities and co-ops and work together.
(in the exact same way that it’s kind of insane that every household has its own set of power tools and ladders that sit around gathering dust.)

exploitation is bad and everything but the most offensive thing about billionaires is that they could do cool shit all day every day and choose not to.

i remember the images of people stepping up and helping refugees arriving at train stations. the being there for each other, the support, the community, the willingness to help, merkel’s proud »we can do this« – and we did! how is this not something to strive for? why would you want to regress? i have no words for what’s happening. how could you not want to help people in need?

these things are lived experience for most of us. we actually know what it’s like to gain more freedoms. it’s not through old tales, we’ve been there, we felt it. we got to see the happiness of queer people when they were finally allowed to marry each other. how much can you hate humanity? i know all the theory, the papers, the science on why people are like this. but on a purely emotional level this is all so fucking stupid.

this whole right wing movement in europe is so baffling to me because most eu citizens actually got to experience how much better a life can be that doesn’t focus on a single nation. we had 30 years of borderless travel. 20 years of our currency just being the same. and i just don’t understand how anyone would want to get rid of this instead of expanding these freedoms more and more.

don’t do the victim thing. you slid into my replies without knowing all the facts and then went into accusation mode because you got called out. at least own it and don’t try to play it as just trying to be nice.

yes, that will definitely help me, a technology journalist covering platforms, understand the actual trends of social media and help me report on industry and culture shifts. great input.
