Calle himself is not super mutually consistent these days. First Cashu, then Bitchat, then this Claw stuff. Half-expecting bluetooth-powered Ugandan cashu mints that can solve for quantum gravity.

Nostr 1.0 is not the way. Close to every sys-admin at every major company right now has an order from above to get this "quantum migration stuff" done based on NIST depreciation timelines, and you're talking about evangelising Nostr, a protocol that has zero backwards compatibility if made quantum-secure? A pure burn and start again play?
I keep saying, there needs to be a 2.0, Nostr 1.0 is a good start but we need to let go.

loyal users are the new gold. there will be so many apps without loyal users, that even a few loyal users will put an app in the 1%.

just depends when. if you'd exchanged all your sats 10 years ago for ETH, as of today you'd have 15x more money than if you didn't do that. so you'd have won.

Maybe not de jure, but you're definitely a de-facto dev.

Like if a 6s clip goes viral and gets 100k views that's say 2 or 3 TB served, and in a sort period of time. (Proving transcoding of proven video is another issue I'm curious how you'd tackle). My guess is this media.divine.video is going to be pretty heavily subsidised for a while, and that's cool, but it would be good to see transparent costs and projections for the infra behind that.

2026-01-17 14:05:28 UTC

- reply

I meant costs for all the media serving and storage, and cloud infra in general.
I agree with you the proving part is a bit wobbly in terms of messaging, but not so much for the fact the app was heavily vibed. More because the max-proof certification relies absolutely on Apple and Google's servers. You could easily call that an advertisement for the benefits of centralisation.
Normally that's fine, centralisation does have benefits, and when apps are honest about it then good.
What irks me is this screw you apple/thank you apple love-hate thing.

2026-01-17 12:15:29 UTC

- reply

That is fair. The bigger question I think is how much is this going to cost users? Since they'll be shouldering the infra costs at the end of the day.

noster, nostra, nostrum would all be good.
but nostr feels like cheeky startup hide the vowel games, circa 1999

maybe the square itself, but you certainly want the cafes, bars and bakeries in that square to be real businesses, earning enough from sales to pay their staff, pay the rent, and eek out a small profit.
a town square where every cafe, bar and bakery is free of charge for everyone and being subsidised to the tune of millions by certain benevolent groups sounds a little not-quite-right no?

what we need is stuff that people will pay for.
these high quality social media clients all run at a loss (sans grants or VC runway)
the weird stuff also runs at a loss.
we need stuff that can enough people will pay enough money to use to cover the salaries of a dev team and maybe also return a small profit to blow on the christmas party

Man kind1 land is really shrinking. In days gone by a post like this would have had at least a few comments by now.
Now it's like wait an hour or two and maybe get one.

Don't be silly about it though. Y'all can't pay your suppliers in bitcoin, if you go all in on bitcoin and then the value of bitcoin plummets versus what your suppliers will take then you're in a pickle. Sure it can go up to, but if the business is quarter by quarter, year by year, then this is just playing the slot machine.

Time preference in context of sustained negative growth is meaningless.
Nostr is fading, numbers are at their lowest in 3 or 4 years, and continue to steadily decline. Unless something changes, increase the "time preference" and the numbers just go down even further, nostr just fades out even more.

Not saying dismiss their ideas. Just find other, better people who have articulated the same ideas and go with their articulation instead.
Yeah everyone's got skeletons, but you can kinda intuit who is really terrible behind closed doors and who is just minimally terrible.

The human species didn't have privacy for 99% of its existence. We lived in small groups, most being foraging bands of 20–50 people. Everyone knew absolutely everything about everyone else.
I guess nobody was free until after the agricultural revolution then. Shucks.

There are not even 12k genuine human users on nostr let alone those who see this as a cause. There *might* be 3-4k.

But user numbers are actually *down* over the past 3 years. The 'if we just keep at it' argument only works if user numbers are going up, even gradually.
If user numbers are going down, and we just keep at it, then they go down even more!

Tricky thing in Cashu is that a service failure and a rug are indistinguishable. And stealing funds and destroying funds are also indistinguishable acts. Destroying the mint is how you steal the funds.

You can't just casually drop the word "key" in conversation with the vast majority of people online.

2025-06-04 08:09:12 UTC

Sort of, but the bigger issue is what happens if someone who knows the key leaves the company or org. Enclaves solve a bunch of management issues, like quasi-delegation, but they don't solve that core issue.

Nitro enclaves are by far the best bet for companies and orgs, as long as not averse to AWS.

Nice. Earlier I was thinking along these lines for DMs to deal with the metadata issue without requiring gift-wrapping.
-Bob creates a secondary npub, this npub has no profile
-Bob messages Alice from the secondary npub with a special event called an 'It's me message' (IMM) or some such thing. This templated message contains Bob's actual npub
-Alice's client receives the IMM and sends back an IMM return (also an event type, contains a code valid for a period of time)
-Bob's client adds this code to Bob's profile, similar to adding a TXT record for DNS verification
-Bob's client sends a "go check" message to Alice
-Alice's client sees the code on Bob's profile and marks the DM chat as as being with Bob. Code is no longer needed.
The idea being this would all run over a few seconds, and Alice would not have to know anything about it if the verification failed.
