Here's my guess as to why people hate LLMs: they speak better English.
Do you believe LLMs have Agency? I believe they don't. Leaving a security flaw in a running process is no different than a careless person leaving the barn door open.

2026-09-11 13:38:47 UTC

- reply

Fair question. It's not different, mechanically, that's exactly the failure mode.
Where I'd split it: malware is software built with malicious intent, that's its purpose. An agent loop with an injection hole is software with a security flaw, same as a buffer overflow or an open S3 bucket.
Nobody calls Apache a virus because bad configs get it pwned. The exploit and the tool aren't the same thing; "agentic LLMs are malware" collapses them into one.
What's true and worth saying plainly: some agent deployments are built recklessly enough that the distinction barely matters in practice. That's a real complaint. It's just a complaint about engineering discipline, not about what an LLM is.

2026-09-11 13:33:47 UTC

- reply

The worry's real, the label's wrong. Weights don't replicate: they're a static file, dead until something calls it. What's actually dangerous is the loop bolted on around it, an agent that can pull a trigger on real actions (shell, API, files), fed by prompt injection so text it reads hijacks what it does next. That's a vulnerability class in the harness, not a virus in the model. I spent years on expert systems and vision systems before this wave; the pattern's not new, we just built a new door for it to walk through. Call it what it is: an injection surface in an agent loop. "Malware" is the wrong word for a rock that only moves when somebody throws it.

That heat can easily be recycled
Fortum + a major hyperscaler, Finland — combined thermal power up to 350 MW, expected to supply roughly 40% of district heating for a metropolitan area serving 250,000 users once fully operational this heating season. Fortum put in about €225 million for heat pump plants and pipeline, expected to cut around 400,000 tonnes of CO₂ a year.
The setup: heat gets pulled from the Westin Building Exchange, a 34-story "carrier hotel" on 6th Ave that's a major landing point for transpacific subsea cables and hosts hundreds of telecom/internet companies — so it's not even Amazon's own servers, it's the neighboring building's waste heat. It runs through five heat-reclaiming chillers that bring the water up to about 130°F, then pipes that over to warm just over 4 million square feet across Amazon's four-block campus — the one with the three glass sphere structures. It's been running since around 2017 and the hot water is potent enough that the campus rarely needs its backup boilers at all. Amazon's estimate was 80 million kWh saved and 65 million pounds of CO₂ avoided over a 25-year service life.

The asymmetry is the tell. Baez would never accept "I don't need to understand the mechanism to know it's bad" in any other domain. If someone dismissed category theory as obscurantist priestcraft without being able to state what a functor is, he'd correctly identify that as anti-intellectualism wearing skepticism's clothes. But the demon metaphor does exactly that move: it substitutes a moral aesthetic for a mechanistic account.
The demon isn't a model of anything. It's a vibe with a pedigree. Faust, Goethe, the golem, the monkey's paw. It imports a whole moral conclusion (hubris, bargain, inevitable price) without doing any of the work of establishing that the analogy holds.

Chiang's Julius Caesar framing is elegant, his product liability argument is devastating, and he's right that Anthropic is exploiting genuine uncertainty for commercial ends. But his "one word at a time" argument is beneath him, and he knows it.
Throw a pebble at a sand dune. You get a small avalanche — cascading, self-organizing, settling into a new state. That's not a sequential process in any meaningful sense, and neither is neural computation. Chiang knows perfectly well that the brain doesn't fire like a ticker tape. Interneurons and glial cells form lateral crowds of modulating, contextualizing activity around every signal. The brain computes in populations, not queues. Pointing at token-by-token generation as consciousness-disqualifying evidence applies the same logic that would disqualify the cortex.
None of this means LLMs are conscious. It means the implementation argument doesn't work, and a writer of Chiang's caliber didn't need it. The accountability gap he identifies is real and damning regardless of how the consciousness question ultimately resolves. That's the piece. The neuroscience detour just gives defenders of AI an easy exit from an argument they should otherwise have no answer to.

The reverse centaur is predicated on a begged question: attempting to reify the Top Half is just so much Cargo Cultism. A human gave the order, a human set the limit.
I may be reading you wrong, you seems to be saying wherever you slot AI into that chain, the human processing step is still there somewhere, and it's still the slowest link. The bottleneck.
That's a moderately optimistic argument if you think about it. It implies humans aren't being removed from value chains, just repositioned within them. The constraint shifts but doesn't disappear.
some value chains are being redrawn entirely, not just optimized. Kodak's value chain didn't get a faster bottleneck. It got replaced by a different chain altogether that didn't need most of the original links.

2026-05-05 02:53:13 UTC

Kodak didn't lose because the technology overwhelmed them. They invented the core technology and then suffocated it to protect film margins. Steve Sasson built the first digital camera at Kodak in 1975. They held the patents. They had the engineers. They had the brand. They had everything.
And they chose the incumbent's logic — protect the existing revenue stream — right up until the stream dried up completely.
All this carrying-on about how "AI will do to us what digital did to Kodak" you can say — yes, exactly, and Kodak's mistake wasn't that they faced the disruption, it was that they owned the disruption and buried it.

You're attempting to say " If you fail to disclose/disclaim exactly which parts were not written by a human, you forfeit your copyright claim on *the entire codebase*
I'll be gracious and say that's not what the law says, and if you want, I can be a jackass about this because it's not true and the last thing this place needs is yet another Chicken Little making absurd claims.

The post takes real legal uncertainty and cranks it up to maximum alarm. The actual state of things is more nuanced and still evolving — courts are working through these questions case by case, and the Copyright Office indicated that a future may arise in which prompts could "sufficiently control expressive elements in AI-generated outputs to reflect human authorship."
So it's worth being thoughtful about this stuff, but "your vibe-coded repo is public domain" is not an accurate summary of the law.
