I often think about the •feeling• of different countries and places—ones I've never visited. And then I wonder what people from other places think about the United States, New England (if they even know that it exists) and Massachusetts (likewise).
I mean, I think of New England as relatively old and cultured. But to a European, does it seem new and crude? I don't know! Although I've heard some Europeans say that New England seems rather European in some ways.
And, of course, there's a LOT more space here.

"Black men are lazy. Shiftless. Dangerous. They're little more than animals, unable to control their bestial lusts. Every one of them wants to rape white women. We'd be better off without them."
Disgusting, right? Nothing anyone could say publicly in this day and age, unless they were in the White House. It's something you might hear in the 1920s or '30s, but certainly not today.
Now take out two key words:
"Men are lazy. Shiftless. Dangerous. They're little more than animals, unable to control their bestial lusts. Every one of them wants to rape women. We'd be better off without them."
Suddenly it's something anyone could say in a magazine, newspaper, TV, or on social media. A little extreme, perhaps, but perfectly righteous.
And all I did was take out "black" and "white".
So why is it okay to say about men in general what you CAN'T (and shouldn't) say about a particular subgroup of men?
People rarely realize that they're being bigoted. When it's common opinion, it just seems like common sense. It's not until times change that people realize what they did and (some) become ashamed of it.
I believe that in time, it will be recognized that men have become an acceptable target for hate that those same people would NEVER think of directing against a racial group, for example.
Unfortunately most so-called "men's rights" groups are fronts for white supremacy, MAGA, and fascism. But that doesn't mean that men aren't actually discriminated against in some real ways.
The presence of a Y chromosome doesn't make a human being a monster. The lack thereof doesn't make someone an angel. Women can be abusive just like men. •We're all human•.
I've been abused by women, badly. Date-raped by a woman. Molested by women. Stalked by women. But I've never done anything TO a woman. Nonetheless I'm constantly called a potential rapist, molester, deadbeat dad (although I had to raise my son solo when his mother abandoned him)...it gets to me. It gets to me really badly.
I've only ever tried to treat everyone as a human being worthy of respect until they proved themselves otherwise. And yet when I l say women can have the same flaws as some men, I'm immediately mocked, sneered at, and hit with the "Not all men" trope - as if that proved something somehow. It's bullying coupled with utter self-righteousness. And I just can't take it any more.
But my only option is to block those who come at me with that attitude, no matter how much I might otherwise like what they write. Because I WON'T join one of those men's rights groups. Still, I'm angry. And I won't tolerate prejudice, no matter how righteous those bigots think they are.
Either we're all human, or nobody is.

Around here assisted living costs 15 to 20,000 per month. I don't know how anybody is supposed to be able to afford that!

2026-06-03 23:58:49 UTC

I have a problem.
My mother is 91. She has dementia and she's stubborn as hell. I'm her health proxy.
Her latest tests indicate that she's not taking at least one important medication often enough. I set up a timed pill box to release her pills every morning; it's kept at her neighbor's place, and she brings it over to my mother every morning.
But Mom is a sneaky one. She'll maybe take a pill or two, and then put the rest of them aside and say she'll take them later. Sometimes we find a loose pill or two on the carpet or fallen inside an armchair.
The doctor also ordered her to give up drinking, but there is a wine shop 3 minutes from her door and she has been getting one or two bottles of wine a week. Despite the fact that Mom promised her doctor that she wouldn't drink any more.
Her memory is shot, but she's also capitalizing on that, I sometimes suspect. We need to either get someone to make sure she takes her pills everyday, or she's going to have to move to assisted living.
I live more than an hour away and I work full time. My brother and sister are closer, but they both have very important jobs and are very busy.
My brother thinks we can talk to her and tell her that she needs to take her pills, but I'm not buying it. I spend more time with her then either of them, and I just don't see her cooperating.
So now the question is, are there home health aids that can dispense pills? Or rather, who could make sure she takes her pills? I'm being told that there aren't, but that seems insane.
Anyway, is anyone else going through something like this? Any suggestions to share? Thanks!

I honestly doubt that centralized social media could possibly match that.
This just increased my interest in working up a good flyer and bookmark to promote Fediverse adoption by more people. I just need to figure out what website to point to. The key factor is avoiding ANY of the techno-speak that causes the non-tech public's eyes to glaze over.

Quasit's Book Recommendations: "Lord of Light" (1967) by Roger Zelazny
This is simply one of my very favorite books. Apart from being quite possibly the greatest work ever produced by one of the two finest craftsmen of prose in science fiction, "Lord of Light" is one of the rare books which I find deeply moving. I can never read the ending without getting a lump in my throat.
Winner of the 1968 Hugo award for science fiction, the novel could easily be mistaken for fantasy. On a distant planet in the far future, human colonists have created a culture based on Indian mythology—except that in that world magic is made real by highly advanced technology.
Some of the ship's crew have assumed the roles of Hindu gods, using both technology and paranormal abilities. The colonists and their descendants live as mortals beneath the rule of the gods, with limited technology and enforced subservience. But technology has made reincarnation possible, so those who obey the gods have a chance at another life when they die.
Not everyone is happy with this arrangement, and the inevitable result is, of course, revolution.
At 257 pages it's a remarkably slender book compared to most modern genre novels. Yet it contains more poetry, emotion, humor, and sheer •imagination• than any HUNDRED science fiction novels published in the last twenty years.
One point: After the first chapter the bulk of the novel is an extended flashback. Zelazny didn't try to hide that, but he didn't make it obvious either. The sheer length of the flashback confuses some readers, so please don't forget.
Another bit of trivia: There were once plans to film "Lord of Light" and turn the sets into a permanent theme park. Jack Kirby (yes, THE Jack Kirby) made sketches for the sets. Sadly the movie never came to be, but the CIA obtained the sketches and used them to help convince the Iranian government that they were looking to film the movie in Iran. This was during the hostage crisis, and was the means by which some diplomats were smuggled out of the country. A movie was made of THAT story, "Argo" starring Ben Affleck. You can see the sketches and more information here.
https://web.archive.org/web/20110724150727/http://lordoflight.com/
Every time I read "Lord of Light" I end up wishing there was more. And yet...how could more be anything but a diminishment?
The book is very much worth owning; I've re-read it many times, and I'll read it many more. But you can borrow it for free from the Internet Archive, too:
https://archive.org/details/lordoflight0000roge
Again: this is one of the greatest classics in the field of science fiction, a true work of art. If you haven't read it, you have a wonderful experience ahead of you.

Speaking of book recommendations: if anyone would like a personalized book recommendation, please feel free to ask! I've probably read more books, particularly older books, than 99% of the human race. And my memory for books is unusually good. So I'd be glad to make a recommendation for anyone who needs one.
Now, I •will• note that I haven't read that many books that were published after the year 2000 or so. I've read some, and I'm trying to read more, but just not that many.
Also I've seen a trend in book recommendation requests that I really can't oblige. Some people seem to want books that are written by someone who is exactly like themselves and which are about someone exactly about themselves. So, for example:
"I want a book written by a left-handed red-haired triple amputee with a birthmark the shape of an iguana on a pineapple who's only attracted to toothless Algerian basket-weavers and has an allergy to water. The book needs to be about a stamp collector who has a pet monkey with purple fur and learns to overcome their fear of leprechauns."
Okay, I'm exaggerating but not by that much. If you want a recommendation like that, I can't help you!
Otherwise, I'm all ears. 🤣

Google is stealing the whole Internet.
I looked up Project Gutenberg on Google. Clicked on the link. Used the search box to find a book. Used Share to copy the link. And that link...was a Google copy. Here it is, slightly munged because I don't want to give Google the clicks:
A Shropshire Lad by A. E. Housman | Project Gutenberg https: //share.google/A0nO7OWm4c2uVLgD2
Now mind you, I didn't take this directly FROM Google. I clicked on the Project Gutenberg link from Google, yes. But then I used the search box on Project Gutenberg itself. So this was two clicks in. Nonetheless Google hijacked the link, flat out stole it and replaced it with a "share Google" link.
Google doesn't own Project Gutenberg. Google didn't do any of the work to make the books available on Project Gutenberg. I'm sure Project Gutenberg didn't agree to let Google steal all their links and clicks. Nonetheless, that's what Google is doing.
And I'll be very surprised if they aren't doing that for EVERY OTHER LINK that could be shared from a site that someone finds via Google.
That is barefaced robbery on a global scale.
Who is going to stop them?
By the way, just in case you were wondering: Yes, Project Gutenberg has their own website with their own actual Project Gutenberg links. Here's the link that I was actually •trying• to get:

If you give people UBI but don't get rid of the oligarchs and capitalism, the price of everything will just go up sufficiently to erase that UBI—and probably more.
So if they give everybody $2,000 a month, the price of everything will probably go up $3,000 a month. If they increase the UBI to 3000, prices will go up to $4,000. Or 5,000. What you have to understand is that as far as the billionaires are concerned, any money we receive is rightfully theirs. And they will use ALL of their power to take it away from us. The working class must always be on the ragged edge of starvation at all times, in the eyes of the oligarchs.
So the UBI by itself is simply meaningless UNLESS we end capitalism. The necessities of life should be free to all, regardless of the specific costs. Everyone deserves housing, everyone deserves food, everyone deserves clean water, everyone deserves power and information.
Once the necessities are free, people can work and contribute to the general good. We can live the lives that WE choose to live, and help each other to make the best of their own abilities and talents. We're going to need every human being to be able to do their best to help save the planet, and to be as fulfilled and content as possible while doing it.
Nothing against UBI as such. Just a warning that in itself it is absolutely not a cure for capitalism.

@nprofile…rkgj For some reason this reminds me of the SCA. 🤣
I never participated myself (except for a feast or two), but my poli sci advisor was a knight with a magnificent suit of full plate. He was about 6'6" and built like Godzilla.
But he's not the one I was thinking of. There was a guy, a mean and not-bright guy, who also fought in the SCA. He went to Pennsic. As you may know (or not), those who can't afford metal armor sometimes wear armor made out of carpet. This guy, being not too bright, got green-and-yellow shag carpeting of the type popular in the suburbs in the 1970s.
But instead of making armor out of it with the backing on the *outside*, he had the shaggy, colored part showing instead.
He was promptly dubbed "Swamp Thang". 🤣
By the way, your armor looks great!

Horace...By Monty Python
Much to his Mum and Dad's dismay,
Horace ate himself one day.
He didn't stop to say his grace,
He just sat down and ate his face.
We can't have this! His Dad declared,
If that lad's ate, he should be shared.
But even as they spoke they saw,
Horace eating more and more.
First his legs then his thighs,
His arms, his nose, his hair, his eyes...
Stop him someone! Mother cried,
Those eyeballs would be better fried!
But all too late, for they were gone,
And he had started on his dong...
Oh! Foolish child! The father mourns,
You could have deep fried that with prawns,
Some parsley and some tartar sauce...
But Horace was on his second course.
His liver and his lights and lung,
His ears, his neck, his chin, his tongue.
To think I raised him from the cot,
And now he's going to scoff the lot!
His Mother cried, What shall we do?
What's left won't even make a stew...
And as she wept her son was seen,
To eat his head, his heart, his spleen.
And there he lay, a boy no more,
Just a stomach, on the floor.
None the less, since it was his,
They ate it-that's what haggis is.

The minute that Trump is gone, if a Democrat manages to get into the presidency, I 100% GUARANTEE that we will hear "look forward, not backwards" in unison from every fucking Democrat in office. There will be no trials. No prosecutions. Not even any investigations. ICE will still continue to exist, as will the surveillance state and the death camps. They'll just get a little less coverage in the media, and there will be more decorum in who they send into the camps. Maybe they will try to have the inmates in the death camps be a little more diverse.
That's the most anyone can expect from the Democratic Party. And Democrats who are expecting anything different have a big surprise coming, although no doubt most of them will stick their heads up their asses and pretend that everything is fine now.

I stumbled on a free collection of short stories by Mack Reynolds, the mercenary-turned-science-fiction-writer! He focused on the economic and sociological aspects of the future, writing often about (for example) a universal guaranteed income back in the 60s and 70s!
The ebook is free, well-formatted, and available in all the major ebook formats.

Yeah. Once again I'm patting myself on the back for having chosen not to follow someone who subsequently proved themselves to be a genocide-supporting scumbag.
I'd have unfollowed him instantly, but I'm glad I don't have to bother. Funny how people like that give themselves handles that seem to indicate that they are anarchists or leftists, but turn into lap dogs of the DNC when elections start to loom!

I want to try to grow a few things this spring. But I have no experience.
I have a small back yard with rabbits, chipmunks, squirrels, and birds. I'd like to grow cherry tomatoes and maybe potatoes. I'm thinking maybe in a couple of wooden half-barrels with chicken wire over the tops.
Should I put a layer of gravel in the bottoms and then cover it with landscaping cloth and topsoil? Should there be a hole in the bottom to let excess water drain out? Will I need stakes for the tomatoes? Should they be heirloom?
And what about the potatoes? Bury them in dirt?
Thanks for any advice!

I'd join a communist or socialist party if I could. But it seems as if there are a million splintered ones, and each one is full of people who are either fighting each other or swearing to the heavens that every other party is corrupt and sold out.
I wish there was a party that didn't get into these insane internecine squabbles over points of doctrine which make my eyes glaze over. Isn't there some sort of basic set of principles that virtually all communists and socialists can agree on? Could we start from there and just advance an agenda?

No need to fear! The DNC is still going to support Israel slavishly, and will happily continue to serve the oligarchs and military industrial complex. Dead children mean nothing to our Democratic leaders, as long as the oligarchs are happy. That's what counts!

Also, what's going to be harder? Persuading others to take up arms against the regime, or persuading them to stop working for a system that's killing them and for bosses who abuse them?

2026-02-12 18:52:31 UTC

Fighting the fascists in the streets is starting from a position of weakness. I suspect it's what the regime wants.
A general strike, on the other hand, hits the oligarchs at their weak point: numbers and money. That is, OUR numbers and THEIR (stolen) money. If enough of us stop working for them for even a few weeks, they'll crumble and run. Without a functioning economy, they're nothing.
They'll do anything to stop us from a general strike.
But we can feed and care for each other during the less-than-a-month it would take to win our freedom from them.
Think about how you can help other workers when the time comes. Prepare a little, if you can. Every little bit helps. An extra can of food or a handmade first aid kit put away on a shelf against The Day we take a stand can be a lifesaver when the oligarchs clamp down!
