Anyone want to read some spooky short stories I've written?

2026-10-23 15:14:48 UTC

It's so interesting to me how the coverage of the French protests in the Netherlands is hyperfocused on race and religion. Like alllll the comments on news videos I see - and even some of the actual coverage hints at it - are basically narrowing in on the black and Arab protestors and how they are destroying society. Very little curiosity about the actual causes that drove 800,000 people - 1 in 80 french people! - to the streets last week.

My main point is. This is work that is pushed on women, whether or not we are good at it. Think of all the time and mental energy that you could return to daughters, sisters, mothers, wives, girlfriends, etc, by taking on that work over the course of a lifetime. Think of how much that adds up.

2026-08-09 06:06:07 UTC

Hot take: if you consider yourself a male feminist, the very first thing you should do, before advocacy, before anything, is get good at cooking and cleaning.

2026-06-16 11:05:10 UTC

Simple quick rant not inviting comments (except if you're also a woman in tech)
Honestly the latent disrespect of being a black woman in tech sometimes grates.
The only reasons I'm still around are:
- good money
- the energy I get from other black people/women specifically
- too hardheaded to let people less talented than me push me out
But yeah if you're wondering why there's so few black women senior+ engs, it's not a matter of interest or talent. Look inward

Why do recruiters always want to call you at every step of the process? And it's usually just to say "you're gonna have an interview, make sure you prepare, they are nice people, but it's challenging"
Like please just text me that

It's so weird getting out of a long term relationship - even though we are older it feels like the men are more childish than ever.
Maybe it's because it's all the leftovers 😂 the ones who actually matured are married or in long term relationships

2026-04-23 19:09:43 UTC

Welp. I just asked Claude to review my resume under my real name and under an anglo man's name (John Ayers), with the exact same prompt, and the results are notably different... Not in a nice way.
- Ornella: repeatedly qualifies me as "senior" (i've been staff for years and do fractional CTO work on the side)
- John: no mention of leveling
- Ornella: questions whether listing a non-technical degree is relevant - I went to Columbia University
- John: no mention of education

@nprofile…jrpa it just seems so random that after a decade-long siege, somehow it's extremely important to open the gates of your city to bring in a giant wooden horse that was left behind by the enemy - like why a horse? And then somehow it being a horse specifically is so funny idk haha

One of the things I love about Stromae is, in interviews, he always refers to his wife, Coralie Barbier, by her full first and last name (not mentioning she is his wife) when describing their artistic collaboration.
Too often you hear artists/academics etc say "I'd like to thank my girlfriend for her help on this project" and it's lucky if they say her first name, even when she had major professional contributions.

(Same with yoga and lots of other stuff that is good for me)

2025-05-24 16:00:20 UTC

Sometimes when I really don't feel like going to the gym, I remember that I have never once regretted going to the gym. So statistically speaking, odds are I won't today.
If that fails, I tell myself I'm gonna go, but just to show my face/walk on the treadmill for 10 min/use the toilet/whatever.
Once I'm there, I might as well do my lil workout 😂
And sometimes none of that works on time, and I just go the next day, or the following.

I have a theory that there are families that go to the doctor and families that don't. I come from a non-doctor-going family, and one of the hallmarks IMO is having "quirks", sometimes for years, that don't have a name.
My mom has had what I suspect is POTS for the last 25+ years but there's no diagnosis, just "oh I pass out sometimes, and I'm supposed to wear compression socks"
And its always "I did go to the doctor" but like yea 20 years ago you mentioned it at a routine visit ya know

I do believe many things get harder with time... But there are so many ways to improve and care for ourselves. 💖

2025-05-13 14:42:44 UTC

It's become very important to me in the last year to believe in my own plasticity.
I think there's a bit of fatalism in our current culture about health. I don't know how many times I've heard "you're young" as a reason why I am able to do certain things.
And yet, for example, I see my ability to lift heavy stuff without hurting my back has tremendously *improved* in the last year, because I've been exercising and doing deadlifts.

@nprofile…8ztf facts - the only thing I'll push back on a bit is Europe is not very diverse: it depends on the area. By some estimates, the Paris region is up to 20% black. But it's hard to know because France prohibits racial statistics, which in a way supports your point.
I will say, IMHO there's no shame in taking your own privileges into account and going where you're wanted. If you're white go to NL. Black Americans are typically treated well in France, model minority style.
