Revitalizing an old flip phone for Amy for the shitty camera. Many cameras and phones from the early 90s to 2010 or so have rubberized coatings on them that degrade and get sticky.
You can often revive them and make them not sticky by applying washi tape and leave it on for a few weeks.
(Before you reply: I do not want to remove the coating which can easily be done with isopropyl alcohol; the washi tape will actually stabilize the coating and make it non-sticky without removing it.)

LLMs are really interesting as a technology because of how polarizing people think about them.
There’s three main very vocal groups: “AI boosters”, “AI doomers”, and what I would call “never AI” people.
Now obviously the doomers and boosters are very much worse than that third group, however all of these groups show at least some cult-like behavior and fallacious arguments.
I’d urge you, if you tend to be critical of “AI” (I’m too!), to not succumb to sanctimonious fanaticism about it like the doomers and boosters are.

This whole thing of "We have unlimited tokens! We can do anything!" is so devoid of any intellectual value—so if you do have that, probably other people have as well. What's the software you're generating worth? Why should anyone even use it when they can make their own software, "in English"? Why even make any software at all when you can just use tokens to "do anything"?
Of course the proponents of this craze will not ask themselves or others these questions.

It’s ok to tell people that you unfollowed or muted them because of it (I do this all the time); but it’s not ok to harass and dogpile.

I really think for “AI” coding that local models are the future.
It’s basically free to run them on hardware you might already have, doesn’t have the environmental issues that data centers have and you don’t have to share your code or project details with anyone.
I’m a bit ambivalent about the ethics of the training data—for coding stuff that data is mostly open source code. I don’t have an issue with my MIT-licensed stuff used for this, but I know other authors do and their preferences should be honored.
I’m hoping that we get “clean” models for this in the future.
Generally I don’t think LLM-assisted programming is universally applicable to all software development but it can be a useful tool.
I also don’t think LLMs are useful for much else (coding is like a one in a million special case). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The code is here, if you're interested: https://github.com/madrobby/png-to-scad/

People going back to optical disks* because of AI fad driving storage prices up
*more precisely "discs", in the ancient traditions of our retrocomputing elders "disc" refers to optical and "disk" to magnetic media

It's not only hoisting sponsored stuff—Google for example started rewriting queries more than a decade ago (long before "AI"), in order to optimize how many ads they can show and how long a user has to spend time to actually find what they're looking for.
This included rewriting queries for medical conditions, for example inside terms from "hypo" to "hyper" (which have opposing meanings), leading to showing people wrong medical advice.
They've relentlessly changed their search engine from finding results to bamboozling users to not navigate away from their site.

@nprofile…3src As a former consultant, I wouldn't have a problem with advising companies on AI use, but they probably wouldn't want to hear what I would tell them.
One of the reasons I tried to get away from it is that no one wanted to really listen.

I wish arguing (as in presenting, supporting and defending opinions while avoiding fallacies) was a subject in school that you have to do for idk at least 4 hours a week for 8 years .
We’d be living in a utopia.

@nprofile…n00n You’re confusing libraries and archives.
The purpose of most libraries isn’t to store all information forever, it’s to give people access to knowledge and entertainment.
Libraries throw out (sometimes selling, sometimes in the dumpster) books constantly, for many reasons, such as book age, obsolescence, frequency of lending, physical damage and demand for space for new books.

I'd love to see more open source maintainers take this clear of a stance.
