I guess it's #Caturday so I should add this image of one of our #Cats chilling out in the cool of the morning.

@nprofile…qfsf it was all around our tent for a couple of hours. Feeling very exposed especially when the lightning lit up the tent walls. We were supposed to camp a second night somewhere but we bailed out on day 2 (yesterday). Good job as yesterdays storm was probably worse

And it all started so nicely 🤣. This day ended with us camping by the lakeside of Ibon de Escalar at 2000m over the border in Spain. A perfect hiking day which finished at the perfect campsite ... until the thunder, lightning, hail and heavy rain hit us for a couple of hours. Don't you just love contrasts!

Previous post talked about the lake at Ibon de Piedrarafita but I forgot to add an image of the lake itself. Here's a short video showing the stunning cirque of peaks rising above the lake

Glorious hike today up to and beyond the Embalse de Bachimaña Alto. Stunning scenery. This walk up through forests to the waterfalls was just the start of a long but ultimately thoroughly enjoyable mountain day.

Day 2 of our backpacking trip was defined by poor visibility and drizzle. Cold, damp night in a makeshift forest bivouac. Ice on the tent next morning. So much snow! Cross border trekking routes closed unless mountaineering gear taken.

Tomorrow we head north on the first part of our ong 10 hour drive through Spain to the town of Panticosa in the Central Pyrenees. Panticosa will be our base camp for the next 3 weeks. Looking forward to plenty of snow and mountains. Some multi day backpacking trips, some day hikes and maybe even some alpine ascents if conditions allow.

Yesterdays fine hike in the quiet and underrated Sierra de Huetor just north of Granada. Lots of interesting mountains, hillsides and forested areas.

After a hard week watching the bird migration it's an afternoon off from watching our feathered friends. Beer, sun lounger and distant view of Africa it is then

@nprofile…mpa6 big subject, but basically applying the same rules fairly to everybody.

I used to be a big #F1 fan. Not now. 5 years ago I got sick of the corruption and dual standards. Never watched another race. But, an annual highlight for me in the mid 2010s was a visit to nearby Jerez to see the pre season testing.
A chance to get up close and personal to these machines hurtling past. Used to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Ground entry for the day only €10 too and, a chance to drink lots of fine sherry in the evenings 😂 Good times.

@nprofile…men0 Nice video, thanks for sharing. Backcountry skiing is just the best form of skiing. Once you've sampled it it's hard to return to the pistes

It's a week before we head off to the Pyrenees for a week long trek. Seems there is more snow than normal for June so will have to take crampons and ice axes to cross the high passes and maybe summit some stuff.
Bummer, as adds to the weight. In an effort to lessen the impact on my ageing body I have bought a pair of these. Petzl Leopard Flexlock crampons, very light, only 385 grams (similar to my existing micro spikes).
Anybody used them?

Yesterday we came across an interesting and unusual feature that we've never encountered before in mountains (outside of Kamchatka in 2013). A deep crack/crevice was found near the summit of Morron de Enmedio at 1098m in the Sierra Elvira. Coming up out of the crack was a constant strong blast of warm wind. This feature (the Raja Santa cavity) is just west of the summit if you want to experience this for yourselves. Natural warming for a cold winters day!
