open weight models are getting bigger and the people hosting them aren't the ones who owe blackstone hundreds of billions. like the dotcom bust, i think this is the 'dark fiber' of the ai bubble. i don't think anyone doubts that there will still be ai models and access to them.
what i think most know is that the frontier models are too expense to run and the ai companies are hiding that. i think the days of "i made photoshop in 3 hours for under $500" are actually numbered due to cost. even if we retreat from this condition for now that won't be forever, but i do think there's intoxication going around about what is actually feasible and will continue to be feasible.
what you're doing isn't particularly taxing for llms... they're good at translating code and taking methodical direction. that isn't what's threatened i think, since smaller models can also do that. we will imo see models that can do million of token contexts retreat until cost and provider capability balance.
the big models may get lost or purchased by amazon, microsoft or the like. if so, i don't see anywhere near the effort to continue improving them. they're good products at a lower price point once losses on the debt are ultimately externalized.

i wonder what could we add to the online codepens out there to move them one step closer to that ideal.
the current web certainly is capable of living up to that old vibe. short webgl+threejs examples can do amazing stuff and while it's possible to just pick up a phone or tablet and have a cube demo in a few minutes, something's still not there. i wonder what's in that missing set of stuff.

something i notice (good) about automated code reviews is that they have good psychological habits, for lack of a better way of putting it.
- focus on the objective
- non-judgemental
- don't re-litigate the past
- yes-and rather than no
i try to be aware of when i'm not upholding these myself and do better, but it's a good reminder of what that looks like.

it can be worse. cities wised up to the big box scam for the most part, but for a good solid 2 decades, box retailers were able to on average get significantly lower property and local tax arrangements on their stores (the dark store theory).

i wonder what the percentage is when you add people who work full time for wal-mart and are also eligible for snap. the subsidy goes both ways.
it isn't bad that we have employers of last resort, but that we allow all profits to be captured while making the public subsidize their payroll.

back in the day, making a little ansi graphic dance was fun, but there's so much more expected now. I once thought a default codepen like interface might be good but the web platform is pretty heavy to actually use. Notebooks like jupyter seem almost there, but dont present interactive apps well. Godot is probably too heavy. What's in between nowadays?

my parents generation were very hard on themselves about certain things and it really held them back. my dad fancied himself a diy person but didn't actually do many projects. he had a crippling perfectionism and i'm pretty sure in hindsight that needing to iterate on designs caused him to feel intense shame, because he'd do literally anything beside revisiting something he'd made or improving it.
it took me until my late 40s to recognize what was happening and seriously combat it myself. recognizing that learning means improving yourself even if the outcome of what you learned from needs improvement seems to be an idea entirely absent from my parents generation, i don't think i met a single person from their generation who thought that way.
i think this is one reason our parents didn't do this stuff as genx and millennials do.

kind of amazing to do a diy this size. never would have done it without watching james bruton (seeing how easy it can be get a bunch of 3d printed mounting hardware), evan and katelyn (recovering and succeeding even when they do something wacky and regrettable even on bigger projects) and a bunch of others. it's neat that there are people out there showing how to think about what's available out there.
things i learned to think about:
- 3d printing, including sending out for 20 or more prints
- small hardware you can buy by the 100s
(hooks, eyes, washers)
- standard materials like m5 nuts and bolts you can have around in quantity without worrying about when they'll be useful
- when in doubt you can wing a lot with various kinds of cord, string, steel wire until exactly what you need is available.
- wood is passable if you all you need is right angles but lots of things are almost always better and easier.
- pvc pipe: it's not just for fluids anymore.
i haven't done anything like this yet and don't have any idea what i'd want to build with it, but i want to try using extruded aluminum channel stock in something.

2025-07-28 00:56:32 UTC

did all the remaining installation for the skylight build. cut risers to put tension on the hook and eye hardware for the middle panels. nice to have it fully complete and fold up the ladder.

as an example, i would absolutely ko-fi you $50 if you can find an example of animating a canvas in gtk# that only uses documented, supported methods to tell gtk to redraw the region.

that part is expected. the unexpected part is "i've tried 103871 ways to tell the windowing system that this has not been newly exposed but i want to draw it _anyway_ and none of them work"

2025-03-06 17:15:07 UTC

- reply

you need that but also remember that people want to animate canvas too. every windowing system and framework makes this a different, incompatible pain.

2025-03-06 17:12:50 UTC

- reply

something to note with canvas is that you'll have to pass through or emulate some kind of damage management to your ultimate client when they want to change the canvas data from top down.

2025-03-06 17:10:54 UTC

- reply

It looks to me like the reason they're doing that is to minimize the amount of actual transferred data when doing expose. The paint each pixel's 16x16 rectangle individually rather than the whole bitmap. In days gone by, this was over a socket (and still is even if a local socket if you use XPutImage instead of xshm).

rust is for the person who spent 6 years on a team of 12 watching crash logs coming in for a bug the day you arrived and having crash logs coming in for the same bug the day you left. it's not for you if your answer to software is 'i would simply not write bugs'.
rust is one step down a path i think is inevitable. software environments are becoming more strict and strictness is merging with proofs. some see beauty in shaping form from chaos and some see beauty in extracting form from order.
