Emergency! was one of my favourite shows growing up, and Mantooth's character, John Gage, certainly qualifies as one of my childhood heros. Rest in peace.

I can still remember the rush of advancing into a new colour band.

In elementary school, SRA kits were totally my jam (via threads). There was also a math-based kit with a super hero theme that was particularly amazing. Anyone here remember digging into SRA kits as a kid?

How it’s done: “To attend school in Ontario, students must be vaccinated against nine vaccine-preventable diseases, including diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), polio, measles, mumps, rubella, meningococcal, and varicella (for students born in 2010 or later) or provide a valid exemption.” #ottawa #health https://ottawa.citynews.ca/2026/02/02/public-health-suspending-ottawa-students-for-incomplete-vaccinations/

"Every autumn, the [Ottawa Wildflower Seed Library] hosts seed giveaways of plants located across the Ottawa region where members of the public can pick up free seed packets filled with a variety of native species – wild bergamot, dense blazing-star, hairy beardtongue and many more."

Our home office setup, circa 2005. We were both wrapping up our MLIS' (we went back and got our degrees a bit later in life) and so spent a fair amount of time here. It wasn't easy, but we have good memories of that time.
This photo was to mark the acquisition of the filing cabinet, which I labeled our "HipsterPDA hard drive" (iykyk).

Any recommendations for basic, personal web hosting? Reliability and good service more important than bells and whistles. Canada-based, of course.

“This will be a scenario where when we plow a road or a sidewalk very soon after, it may not look like we plowed anything…” HA! You have got it be kidding me. I’m sorry: it is always obvious whether the snow clearing crew has passed, even if more snow has fallen or blown over. No, the city’s just been doing a poor job of it, starting with failing to clear snow from previous snowfalls, which has made the snow that’s fallen in the past week that much harder to clear #ottawa

More on snow banks: in our community FB group someone was saying that they city, seeing the storm coming, decided to hold off on clearing away the snow banks until after the storm. This is what happens when you prioritize bean-counting over service. I mean, you might as well wait until spring -- it's all going to melt eventually anyway! #ottawa

Last week there were a few books I was looking to order, and instead of going the usual route of getting them through Amazon Prime, I opted to order them through one of my local book stores. I got the notification a few days ago that the first book had arrived, and yesterday that the second one was there as well. I dropped by today while out running errands, and got to say “thank you" in person to the kind storekeep at https://octopusbooks.ca/ #ottawa #bookstore #shoplocal #canada

I also suspect that many CDL initiatives are being reviewed and possible paused now that the courts have sided against IA.

2024-09-06 16:11:20 UTC

While I was uncomfortable from the start with the Internet Archive's appropriation of libraries' "brand" to bolster their fair-dealing case in the court of public appeal, we should remember that a lot of libraries and librarians were glad to see IA take on the publishers and set a new precedent for fair-use. It seems disingenuous now to "tsk! tsk!" them now.
