@nprofile…29up I am not built to adapt to that watch style. I pause and rewind if I there's an interruption and I watch shitty movies to the end in pure stubbornness.
I am really trying to learn to have a conversation while watching, but I am not optimistic :P

@nprofile…lc5w A bit odd to go half way - naming add-ons "apps", but not integrations "libraries"?

@nprofile…fnpd I switched from macOS to NixOS in 2019. Would absolutely not recommend it and would never want to run anything else.
Primary you should settle on first is your desktop and apps - underlying distro is effectively swappable.
For the desktop I prefer KDE as it's extensively customiseable. My setup is some early-days macOS + dark mode + window tiling blend.
For apps my approach was to identify good cross-platform options and daily drive them on macOS for months before swapping OS.

@nprofile…kgju I've been taking it as scripture that Debian chews up SSDs for breakfast - with lots of logging, so my main drive on the minis are all HDDs (external where needed).
Shared storage I do via iSCSI to a NAS only concerned with storage.
Those lockups sound super frustrating. Worth noting that I never pass hardware-based network interfaces directly to any VM - only bridges. Don't know if that makes a difference.

2025-10-13 21:20:07 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…kgju Yeh I've just got a couple of old & second hand mac minis here ;)
Guiding rule for my choices centers on not having the computer say no and not wanting to deal with shit until it works for me. If a mini throws a fit, I can deal with it on the weekend or something :)

@nprofile…kgju On the Proxmox end of things I run VMs only - for full flexibility on pve features like high availability auto-migration, pbs, etc.
I host services collected in VMs based on rough relation (IE work & private seperate). In the VMs, where possible, I use systemd containers w. dedicated pve network interfaces passed through, and podman for anything with limited releases available.
Really do not feel like wasting more energy juggling OCI network config.

@nprofile…gvnm Professionally we're putting another project to rest, turning off the lights, but remain optimistic for the future. Still hanging out with Charles, just focusing on building cool stuff :)
Personally we moved a bit out of CPH last summer, for a bit more quiet, a bit more nature, and the conveniences of replacing a 1930 apartment with a 2023 row house.
Things are different, but I find that over the last 10-15 years I have identified a lot more small things to generate joy & meaning.

2025-02-11 19:17:44 UTC

@nprofile…gvnm For the things that turn sour:
- I pick an aspect of it which has been positive, a central lesson to carry forward, and accept the limits of my control.
For the chaos & shit all around:
- I identify what meaningful impact I can have near & far. It doesn't have to be big or loud, it doesn't have to fix it all. It can be concrete, it can be an attitude.
- I figure out what else makes me happy and make sure to do just a little of that every day. The little TODOs chipping away at the project.

@nprofile…ss2n The flakes-only docs are annoying for sure. Another example of the hilarious state of nix documentation.
I don't actually pin the main channel - just specific packages where I find it necessary. The main channel I just lock to releases and then auto-update daily.

2024-12-28 09:42:42 UTC

@nprofile…ss2n Already doing pinning with vanilla nix and the design pattern of flakes isn't particularly interesting or useful to me. So not diving into flakes wasn't a difficult choice.

@nprofile…ss2n @nprofile…rm6v Not if you change the default shell of the nixos user to your own shell script running the install prep and then the install.
With that setup the install can be 100% hands-off if you want it to be.

@nprofile…ss2n Spinning up a new VM is a fairly manual process for me. I will have a script generate a new key and show the public part before running the installer.
Basically:
- Boot installer iso.
- Git clone my install scripts.
- Run the full prepare script:
-- Picking named volumes.
(formatting runs)
-- Specify repository URL.
-- Copy new pubkey to my git server.
-- Hit enter to proceed to config cloning.
-- Input main user name.
(install runs)
- Input main user password.
(reboots)

Mini PCs in the ground floor tech room. Towers in the 1st floor tech room. DisplayPort & USB cables run to the desk on the 2nd floor. Everything tied up in a Proxmox cluster.
Previous home had me sitting right next to all of that in a shelving system. Ended up correcting pretty hard for all of the noise.

@nprofile…jvvf Playing favourites doesn't make much sense, but one of the categories of comments most important to me is the non-intuitive flow explanation.
Like:
"NOTE: Yes, normally a more optimal walk of this data would be X, but the real world data we are seeing is Y, so while that remains true, Z is actually more efficient. If this changes, I would recommend W."
It takes a bit more writing, but is also just a solid favour for future self or colleague.
