Happy Weekend! In a few hours, Open Source Conference 2026 Japan in #Nagoya will be held at the Fukiage Hall in Chikusa Ward:
https://event.ospn.jp/osc2026-nagoya/
One of their talks is from the Nagoya #BSD Users Group, and seems to target #NetBSD in particular. That sounds pretty awesome, and definitely one of the ones I'm going to attend.
https://event.ospn.jp/osc2026-nagoya/session/2296979
I wonder what the chances are I'll find anyone from Fedi in there? Anyone feeling like dropping by "boring city" on a Saturday? :P

But why not Primitive FTPD? SFTP? Samba? Pairdrop? Anything that would work over ubiquitous and fast 802.11 WiFi?
Don't ask me, ask the Android developers. They are the ones who made sure these would not work without any explanation.
Anyways, lotsa kudos to whoozle for developing this tool. Do check it out!

OK, real talk real quick? If you have to transfer large amounts of photos from your Android phone to your Linux computer (as when, you know, you do your regular *local* backups, wink wink), get a USB cable and use android-file-transfer.
Yes, Martha, a USB cable!
Because when every other option to transfer the damn files wirelessly to computers I control has been sabotaged by the Android OS (I mean, why would they do want to do that, right? If not, for, I don't know... their cloud services?!), I guess no other way except going old school. Luckily, though, the application is super freaking fast and well done. Not once with me did the transfer drop because the phone went to sleep or due to some other esoteric error like it happens with "native" MTP.
So, yeah that was a nice discovery to end the night.

Perhaps a little late for #Screenshotsaturday (maybe even for #screenshotsunday in this timezone?) but here we go... a little fiddling with #Openbox
The applet icons in the panel are still a little glitchy, but I like how this rice is turning out so far. I was aiming to reproduce the Win7/8 early 2010s feel more or less.

#TIL that the style of design from the Vista / 7 era of WIndows has a (retroactive) name: Frutiger Aero
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frutiger_Aero
When you look at those "glassy" window decorations and icons, know that's what Frutiger Aero is all about.
(ironically, I didn't even bother with KDE4 back then, which was right around my beginnings with Linux)
More info: https://frutigeraeroarchive.org/history
Now, if only I could find such a theme to fit #Fluxbox!...

@nprofile…h3v3 after a very long "terminal-only" streak and using solely #mutt for my emails, I can say that I've been VERY happy with claws-mail (probably the funniest-sounding client out there).
In my opinion, it strikes truly the right balance between usability and lightweightness. Plain-text email (cuts the fluff away) with viewing of images built in, plugins for pretty much anything, including RSS feeds, etc. The setup is also super easy, through a wizard much like Thunderbird. Once set, you can copy the saved dotfiles and carry them over to other installs, too, allowing quick redeployment.
Claws itself is a fork of an older and even lighter client, #sylpheed, but I found that the latter does not work with all of my accounts. I encourage everyone to try it!

@nprofile…h3v3 nice!!!
Man, I have an old Samsung phone around that could really be my first candidate to install it, but I'm pretty afraid of bricking it [1]... how "scary" was it for you? Was it the first time you flashed it to a phone?
---
[1] contrast this anxiety with the safety of installing Linux on a laptop, where you can eff-up your setup countless times, and yet the hardware will still be fully usable, and just a fresh reinstall away.

Hey fedi, what do y'all think about the L-series #Thinkpad s? They are not listed in that famous used thinkpad buying guide, and I've found mixed opinions as to their quality vs price values.
I've found some good (but not spectacular) deals on used ones, so just wondering whether to consider them next.
Comments appreciated!

Like, What the Fuck. Ads and shameless spying everywhere. Is this a business OS or a marketing OS?
And to top everything off? The right Ctrl button on the laptop's keyboard has an "Ask Copilot" function built-in. LIke, fucking forget pressing Ctrl+Pg Up or whatever. Copilot down your throat, motherfucker!
Guess FOSS OSes are so good we take their goodness for granted.

OK, it finally happened - I'm stuck with only being able to host services over IPv6 at home, while my mobile service provider only provides IPv4. So, most of the reasons why I self-host -> trashed.
(I know, I know, I should've signed up with another mobile provider. But their pricing and offers are reeeeeally hard to ignore at this point for me)
So, what are the options that I have to be able to reach IPv6 addresses from an IPv4-only network on an Android device?
Thanks already Fedi! #boostsapreciated

Man, picking a new #Peertube instance is not easy!
Granted, that are over a thousand that you can choose from, but to find a medium-to-small sized one that allows registration, and with agreeable content orientation and compatible terms is like detective work!
Of course, I could make it a no-brainer and just pick the largest instance around that allows registration, but then I'd simply be in for the same Fosstodon problem in the future.
Research, I must...

I just realized it's been 2 years since I started to use Debian Sid (and Devuan Ceres) as a Desktop daily driver. And we're still rolling with it!
Things changed quite a bit since I wrote this piece right in the beginning of the adventure, and I learned some valuable lessons on how to tread safely with it while still having fun. I should probably write an update for it soon.

Seems that my old terminal client #tut doesn't work in C.IM. I get a certificate error, but I rather blame the non-development for not updating their cert stack.
On a brighter note, a similar (and arguably more modular as it allows for real scripted CLI action) client called #toot works flawlessly. The interface is a little different, but nothing that can't be learned as I go. We're back to tooting lightly now!
