Apparently, my brain is still grave-struck and I have bothered a woman. Maybe more. I don't know. Things that I've said in public.
So I'm going to unfollow all the women I know, just to be safe.

That's kind of funny!
Sad, but funny.
If you put the subdomain 'noai' in front of duckduckgo, you can avoid that slop
https://noai.duckduckgo.com/
And it's more private1, obviously.
As well "DuckDuckGo's results are a compilation of "over 400" sources according to itself, including Bing, Yahoo! Search BOSS, Wolfram Alpha, Yandex, and its own web crawler (the DuckDuckBot); but none from Google."2
It's not for everyone, but if you are able to self-host your own SearxNG at home, I find it's the best option: controlling your own meta search engine3
I was very pleased to be able to add https://marginalia-search.com/ to my mix of results yesterday after the lead dev, Viktor, emailed me an api key 🙂 . I gave it a weight of 1.2 I think.

And on mercury, CO2, lead... USians are right screwed.
And lots of other things. The misinformation on vaccinations will kill and maim many USians in the coming years. Health and safety, medical coverage, unions, food stamps - nearly any advance in USian society since WWII is being rolled back - especially 80% taxes on the filthy rich to near zero, while increasing the tax burden on the poor to pay for the USA's military-based economy.

@nprofile…x9tq More than one geek I know on here writes that A'i' stagnates his thinking. The pathways fade.
There is no 'i' in A'i'. It's simply predictive. It's reflexive to call it a predictive spell on drugs, but...
Here is a great comment I found a bit ago.
Best description of 'AI'
Drew Kadel @nprofile…6cqg wrote:
"My daughter, who has had a degree in computer science for 25 years, posted this observation about ChatGPT on Facebook. It's the best description I've seen:"
Something that seems fundamental to me about ChatGPT, which gets lost over and over again: When you enter text into it, you're asking *"What would a response to this sound like?" If you put in a scientific question, and it comes back with a response citing a non-existent paper with a plausible title, using a real journal name and an author name who's written things related to your question, it's not being tricky or telling lies or doing anything at all surprising! This is what a response to that question would sound like! It did the thing! But people keep wanting the "say something that sounds like an answer" machine to be doing something else, and believing it *is doing something else. It's good at generating things that sound like responses to being told it was wrong, so people think that it's engaging in introspection or looking up more information or something, but it's not, it's only, ever, saying something that sounds like the next bit of the conversation."

"similar and 120-140"
That's the number for the Seniors. The breakfast combines to 250 people or so I think. No one really counts, because it's by donation.
Sometimes, if the line up is way out the door, we quickly dispatch someone to go out and buy a ham we can slice up quickly and hot up on the flat top.

I'm not a cook, per se - I just volunteer for different organizations.
Once a month, the Knights of Columbus have a pancake breakfast at a K-10 school and I've been cooking for it for ~20 years. I am not in the Knights of Columbus, I just like donating my time. I do the odd other thing from them too.
So.. the adjacent Catholic church has a 9am and an 11am mass which generates 2 sittings at 10am and 12 noon.
That meal includes fruit platters, french toast, pancakes, sausage, bacon (I do all the meat) and scrambled eggs. The cost is by donation - you can eat free, over pay or whatever. Each time is for some charity or other.
The other one, is because I'm a 'senior' now and I am another group. About every 6 weeks we have a free meal about something and 120-140 people show up.
https://skeenavalleyseniors.org/
Don't be too critical: I just threw this website up last week.
All the Irish stuff sounds made up, but I'll be cooking it. I cooked all the burgers for the Valentines thing, you can see a foto of me with pergoies for the oven in the gallery. I need more fotos of the other events and to take out a bunch of Ukrainian Christmass - it's just all I had on my hard drive.
The yellow house and barn are all thrift shop - I need to do a lot of work to that site, but I'm in other things too.
Our Skeena Local Action for Palestine had a 5 course dinner with a couple of cooks from Gaza. I did hours of prep and ran the dishpit. I got home at 22h30 that night after starting just after noon. Very successful politically and donation-wise. We're going to do it again.
And now I'm also in the Greens executive...
I like and need to be doing things vs. just doom scrolling and filling in petitions and stuff.
Sorry, maybe tmi.

2026-03-09 23:00:10 UTC

I'm eating a veggie burger. Basically, black beans. I've home made them before, but these are frozen patties given to me as a gift.
The irony is that I fried it in the bacon grease I rescued from the 16kg of bacon cooked at the pancake breakfast Sunday.
Still, it's really good!

So not a good Sunday for a pancake breakfast.
We had very high winds last night. The power went out, but only for 5 minutes or so, but the internet was off for the next 14 hours.
One of the guys I cook with is in charge of the electrical grid for quite a large area around us. He told me he had to send crews out to a substation near us and he sent two crews up north to Stewart and... somewhere else; forget.
But the thing is, our clocks moved forward an hour, so when I got up at 5, it was really 04h00 in my body, but I need to start cooking early, because I do all the meat for the first sitting of probably 120-140 people.
Speaking of which... I said to buddy "Why this different bacon?" 16kg of bacon wasn't what I was used to cooking. Well, that brand of bacon is now C$30/kg (€19)!! The one I used was C$12/kg and quite fatty. Our grocery prices in Canada are insane these days. 2L of milk I just bought was C$5.37 (€3.40). A can of olive oil that was $18CAD is now $40 (€25.34)! You can bet I save all the bacon grease from the flat top!

Our first green party riding association meeting
Well. There were only 4 of us - and 3 of us are also in Skeena Local Action for palestine - including our candidate. We need to get the news out - there must be some card carrying greens around. I think we can find out and have the party mail them.
We put up a poll for the date of the first AGM. It needs 30 days advance notice and a voting period of 7 days.
Frankly, there's lots of paper work to get through as well as a lot of regulations to adhere to.
Well, I'm happy anyhow. It's a start.
Our local action went from 4 at a demo to several dozen within a year. I'm happy.

A young lady ahead of me in Safeway took that to the next level!

I was just standing there, gormless, waiting for my turn, when I found myself gawping at my No Groceries! Where did they go‽

Raised Knobby Bits and Blind Bits
Intersections at Japan were strange to me.
They don't have induction calls beneath the roadway like ours have.
And there are no 'Walk' buttons to flip the switch directions.
Instead, or in addition have to, are raised patterns of either dots or bars to indicate which way the traffic should go.
This habit is repeated within large malls and public spaces too.
On the other hand, Japan does not use signal buttons or inductive coils in the road bed.
Again, why do such great ideas reach us across cultures and the easily spanned world to our mutual benefit? Why?

Debt: The First 5,000 Years David Graeber
It is an hour-long talk, plus questions afterward.
One of the recurring themes is a jubilee when all debt is forgiven. I think that's only personal debt?
He said that a model was run by, I think, Goldman-Sachs as to what would happen to the economy. The model predicted a lot of financial turmoil, of course, but it was less damaging than simply waiting for the whole house of cards to collapse.

The right to protest is sacrosanct and more stifling of protest makes democracy worth less.
We only have the right to free speech and protest so long as it is not inconvenient for oligarchs, the property and businesses of whom the police are there to serve and protect.
The interests of commerce are paramount in our society.
Anything else the police do (badly) is mere window dressing.

BC (canadian western province) electrical grid dashboard?
@nprofile…6ena 's absolutely gorgeous page of the the UK grid https://grid.iamkate.com/ sent me down a rabbit hole I've burrowed in before without success.
Ontario has nice dashboards1 and there is a national demand dashboard2 with BC notably missing data, except for interconnects with USA and Alberta.
I found some maps from BC Hydro of our grid https://www.bchydro.com/energy-in-bc/operations/transmission/transmission-system/maps.html and I was like "what are these capacitor symbols doing?" - they are capacitors! :-) Are they there to correct the power factor? I suppose there is enough inductance already for going the other way... @nprofile…w8de ? I imagine you know.

A magazine declares the growth of renewables as the 'breakthrough of the year'. Solar outstripped coal for energy production. I was initially cheered.
But when you actually consider the graph, CO2 producing energy inputs haven't gone anywhere. We haven't reduced at all. New needs are being filled with solar perhaps, but the old needs are still puffing along just fine.
It is good we're not increasing, but we aren't fixing anything and my country (Canada) and my province (BC) is working hard to export even more oil and gas, building new LNG plants and more pipelines.

In canada, the RCMP is, of course quasi-military out of the gate and before with the NWMP, but I'm increasingly horrified as I see video from down south, france and many other places at the sheer number, weaponry and tactics that are brought to bear on nearly any large gathering.
On more than one occasion I've actually thought "Is this a joke?" when looking at what would appear to be masses of men cosplaying StarWars storm troopers.
I'm not an 'abolitionist' so to speak, but I do have problems with their number, weaponry, how they are deployed and other issues. As well as how they self-select - even normal people don't deal well with that kind of power over others.

After an emergency, your tap water may not be available or safe to use.
Use bottled, boiled, or treated water to avoid getting sick.
Boiling is the best way to kill germs in water.
After an emergency or disaster—such as a water main break, hurricane, Thames Water, or flood—you can take steps to make sure you have safe water.

Wow! That was an adventure! :-)
I made enough room for both vehicles to get out (the 3rd is AWOL, probably gaming).
I just moved snow from the driver side door. No sense filling the driveway with even more snow.
I got it out into the street, which had only had one pass with the council's plough truck. I had ~20cm (8") to take off. By the time I'd done the vehicle with a broom and came back to the front, there was already ~3mm on the windshield again. Hmm. This may be a Bad Idea gem...
Yeah. It was really sloppy out there. I don't have a four wheel drive pickup truck anymore. I have this thing that's just short of a sports car and 1997.
I skidded on turns - everyone did, even 4x4 trucks. I ignored red lights and stop signs for the most part - yes, it was that bad. On any upward grade, I was afraid to stop. When I did stop, I got mildly stuck. Of course, I have a shovel in the car, in case it gets serious! :-)
The worst part was the windscreen icing up and/or the wipers accumulating ice. For the last couple of km I gave up and just went with my knowledge of the streets. Fun, fun (for low values of fun). I have driven in much worse, but with better vehicles...
My SIL still hasn't put on my winter tyres, so that didn't help either! :-)

That all sounds right to me. Extremes of any idea are toxic to societies.
And then there's defining terms. Even 'justice'.
By which moral values? Codified in the law, certainly, but how to compare criminal codes that lean more to revenge and punishment to those leaning more to correction and reform? Or laws that favour one segment of a society over another? Legal isn't always moral.
OK, recidivism rates, for one. I'll try to think of something else.
It seems like the entire notion of 'legal justice' is inextricably bound in the problems of religion and moral philosophy in general.

In the trades, large projects build large fly-in camps. Journeymen are rotated in and out and when the project is completed, they move on to another project, perhaps in another country. Maintenance shutdowns in mills and factories are handled the same way, except with the expediency of local hotels vs semi-permanent camps.
Outside the trades few new hires happen and elderly staff are kept on without mentoring younger folks.
This has an end. We've seen it in micro already, but when the boomer generation finally has to quit or dies...

There is unrelenting pressure from corporations to privatize our health care. Everywhere in the world.
BoJo actually hired a USA corporate CEO from the industry to plan the dismantling of the NHS and I think he succeeded.
Breaking things up into small units that can supplement shortfalls in funding with for-profit out-sourcing will, inevitably, lead to larger shortfalls in funding. Of course.
That's the UK done for and it's happening in Canada too with the province of Alberta leading the way, but there are moves and pressure everywhere. Healthcare in Canada is social, but not national as with the NHS and provinces have a lot of autonomy. There are rules, but Alberta is breaking them using an infrequently used clause in the constitution.

The fire, once begun, spread for the same reason though.
What my friend and I admired, when we were discussing the two events this morning, was the government's response: immediate.
UK legal is still dragging its feet ten years later. I doubt anyone will be brought to book over Grenfell in the end.
Wong Fuk was undergoing renovation.
Yeah - "all of the windows had been sealed with flammable polystyrene for more than a year."
Government subsidized, eight residential blocks, 31 storeys tall and with nearly 2,000 units
Here's the current wiki page opening summary:
"On 26 November 2025, a large fire broke out at the Wang Fuk Court apartment complex in Tai Po, New Territories, Hong Kong. More than 128 people were killed, and 79 were injured, including 12 firefighters. Many of those who died were trapped in their apartments. Around 150 people remain missing as of 29 November 2025.
The apartment complex was undergoing major repairs to all eight residential towers' exterior walls, and had bamboo scaffolding erected around the buildings to their full height. Construction safety netting was required to wrap the scaffolding for safety purposes. Such netting at Wang Cheong House (Block F) was ignited by an unknown source and, given the presence of expanded polystyrene foam boards covering the windows as an accelerant, quickly engulfed the building and spread to the adjacent blocks, ultimately engulfing seven buildings of the eight buildings of the complex."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wang_Fuk_Court_fire
Now then. 3 plans were submitted after the government inspection mandated renovations. The most comprehensive plan was chosen and changes from the plan were approved over time. So who signed off on those?
edit: I know it's a long way from IT, but one of my very long term clients (20+ years) was a general and, when they were out of town, I sometimes had to inspect job sites. I mostly only cared about payroll in particular, but you'd be surprised (or not?) how often I'd ask "What's going on here?" to learn "Oh, the engineer/architect flew in and asked me to ..." That's nice. You're such a good guy. Congratulations. Where's the effing change order‽‽ Now we're responsible for that! I did read the scope etc.
Anyhow, there are Other potential contributory factors https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wang_Fuk_Court_firer#Other_potential_contributory_factors https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wang_Fuk_Court_fire#Other_potential_contributory_factors
"No official convictions in either case at this point"
In the UK, there haven't even been any charges laid! Never mind convictions - and it's been ten years now!
I do worry about you and yours living as you do. I know lots of people around the world live that way. And I know I have an issue with heights in general (even with fall arrests, I have to force myself to climb an antennae tower or w/e), but I still pray for you guys.
Anyhow, bamboo scaffolding was already on its way out and that didn't help either.
128 people.
More than: 150+ are still 'missing'.

@nprofile…dhvz I know you're way up in the sky where you live, so I was wondering how you were. I couldn't live in one of those myself.

If I ever met Pope Leo, I'd ask him if he ever gets to drive
After getting all of Pope Leo’s luggage loaded into the limo, (and he doesn’t travel light), the driver notices the Pope is still standing on the curb. ‘Excuse me, Your Holiness,’ says the driver, ‘Would you please take your seat so we can leave?’
‘Well, to tell you the truth,’ says the Pope, ‘they never let me drive at the Vatican when I was a cardinal, and I’d really like to drive today.’
‘I’m sorry, Your Holiness, but I cannot let you do that. I’d lose my job! What if something should happen’ protests the driver, wishing he’d never gone to work that morning.
‘Who’s going to tell’ says the Pope with a smile.
Reluctantly, the driver gets in the back as the Pope climbs in behind the wheel. The driver quickly regrets his decision when, after exiting the airport, the Pontiff floors it, accelerating the limo to 205 kms. ‘Please slow down, Your Holiness’ pleads the worried driver, but the Pope keeps the pedal to the metal until they hear sirens.
‘Oh, dear God, I’m going to lose my license — and my job!’ moans the driver.
The Pope pulls over and rolls down the window as the cop approaches, but the cop takes one look at him, goes back to his motorcycle, and gets on the radio.
‘I need to talk to the Chief,’ he says to the dispatcher.
The Chief gets on the radio and the cop tells him that he’s stopped a limo going 205 kph. ‘So bust him,’ says the Chief.
‘I don’t think we want to do that, he’s really important,’ said the cop.
The Chief exclaimed, ‘All the more reason!’
‘No, I mean really important,’ said the cop with a bit of persistence.
The Chief then asked, ‘Who do you have there, the mayor?’
Cop: ‘Bigger.’
Chief: ‘ A senator?’
Cop: ‘Bigger.’
Chief: ‘The Prime Minister?’
Cop: ‘Bigger.’
‘Well,’ said the Chief, ‘who is it?’
Cop: ‘I think it’s God!’
The Chief is even more puzzled and curious, ‘What makes you think it’s God?’
Cop: ‘His chauffeur is the Pope!’
So, Alex, that's why not! :-)

I'm so old that, at first glance, I thought it was the album cover for Tubular Bells scrolling up the screen! :-)

@nprofile…czr6 No winning you reckon?
On top of this, our scare-mongering media has people driving their children 2 blocks1 to school, because of stranger danger...
An anecdote. An old priest commented to a woman that he hadn't spoken to her the other day when she was jogging, because of her earphones.
She admitted that she isn't even playing music or listening to anything! They are simply there to deter people (read 'men') from approaching her.
[1] My own grandkids! Which is weird, because their mom walked quite some distance to the school bus and there were bears around our place. Go figure. That's partly why I think it's down to diseases like facebook, fox, cbc et al.
