Fosstodon is now a real life example of the nazi bar story.
The nazi has sat at the bar, drinking quietly. And no one is throwing him out.
His buddies will soon be here.

Fair warnings, thank you.

If "fighting the system from within" worked, it would have worked by now

You may have heard of modern luddism, but maybe you're uncertain what it's about, or perhaps you're even dismissive of it because you think it's categorically against technology.
Well, here's a talk by @npub1j8v…ld5q that criticizes the open source movement from a luddite perspective. By being critical of tech's effects on society and people (as luddites are) he identifies the problems with open source, and paints an optimistic future that can be.

Yes, and
the main effect this has is making Codeberg unsuitable for corporations to use as their main repo.
Small teams and individual developers? Not a problem, just like you said.
But big corpos won't go near such an "unreliable" service.
Which, is fine by me I guess? Let them stay on fucking Github or whatever platform will most efficiently steal their stuff and sell it back to them.
I'm fine at my cozy little corner without them, thankyouverymuch

The recent attack on #Codeberg shows, if anything, that software is very much political.
Pretending to ignore this means you're siding with the status quo.

2025-02-12 11:08:31 UTC

@npub1fh7…ee83 is commendable for demonstrating how politics are inseparable from FOSS, and they cut right to the core of the issue with their latest announcement.

Well done everyone at Codeberg, I am proud that I chose you as my forge.

Fosstodon decided not to defederate from Threads, deferring to the ability of each user to individually block
https://hub.fosstodon.org/our-position-on-threads
This is disappointing in a big way. To me, this is equivalent to saying that we allow transphobic content in the local timeline because you can block offending users yourself.
It is the lack of a position, the avoidance of a decision. I hope the admin team revisit this soon.

I feel like technology, especially software, have become what derivatives are to the actual economy.
It has moved on to create its own universe that theoretically has roots in the real world but in reality is completely detached from it.
People are no longer thinking in terms of real problems and solutions to them. Instead, they are making stuff up just to participate in the ecosystem.
And everyone has convinced themselves that this is progress.

@npub1kxe…ns4m After a few months of constant CAPTCHAs, it seems you have completely blocked 31173 Services AB, which means Swedish @npub1xh7…v9hj users are left out of your service.
I'm not sure how effective or necessary such a blanket ban is, but I would guess that a lot of your users opt for privacy and therefore also use a VPN.
Seems like you are disproportionately punishing your actual users. I want to use your service, but you have pushed me off it.

Latest Web Brief by @npub1wpv…rz2s is just brilliant
https://briefs.video/videos/what-is-react/
I am completely onboard the idea that when we talk about a framework/library/tool build by a company, the abuse, damage and destruction caused by that company should be an integral part of the discussion.

But that's the response all tech daddies give for the pet projects.
They will make all their money selling to surveillance states, weapons manufacturers and so on, and cater to their needs almost exclusively.
But, when they try to defend their record, they will ignore all that and just appropriate work some NGO did that made headlines, using their product.
Dishonesty is the main marketing tool for SV. It bears repeating, of course, but it is not new.

Logitech CEO: In the future we will sell a mouse that customers can use "forever.""
Me: <Looks at my mouse I've been using forever>
Logitech CEO: But what if it was, like, a software subscription. For the mouse. So it lasts "forever".

I swear, CEOs say crap that is indistinguishable from chatbot word salad.

The year is 2030.
Computers boot directly into the browser. IDEs are just a web app now, running in the GPU. No one knows why. Or how.
All programs run in 4 nested containers on top of a hypervisor abstracting over the 5 major computational clouds. The last time a branch was predicted correctly, in any CPU anywhere, was 4 years ago.
Cloud costs are withdrawn directly from your retirement fund.
Ext7 just came out, it's written in Javascript and uses AI to guess what the file may contain.
