You wanna vote? Cool. I see it as harm reduction, and I'm glad folks in #Brazil don't have to deal with Bolsonaro Jr.
But don't confuse winning an election with changing the system.
The work doesn't stop when the ballots are counted. That's when the real work continues.
Elections are a fucking Band-Aid. And when the whole system is rotten, sometimes you gotta amputate.

Mari Rueda is still rotting in solitary confinement, getting strip-searched and shackled every time she leaves her cell. Meanwhile, the state keeps doing what it does best: being a sadistic piece of shit.
We've raised $37,210 toward the $100K needed for a lawyer. Now we need 40 crews to raise $1,600 each by November 30.
Got a punk band? Book club? Anarchist collective? A few pissed-off friends? Organize a fucking fundraiser.
Solidarity ain't a spectator sport.

There’s a moment every spring in Japan when the cherry blossoms bloom. It’s everywhere in Japanese cinema: a symbol of how beautiful and fleeting life is. People gather under the trees, eat, drink, hang out, and celebrate this tiny window of time before the blossoms disappear.
It makes me wonder why we don’t celebrate the fall colours in the northeast of Turtle Island with the same kind of ritual.
Having the privilege of living here, this time of year feels absolutely magical. Nature just puts on a fucking show. And it makes me happy, but also a little sad, because it’s impossible to look at all this beauty without thinking about the damage we’re doing to the planet.
So, yeah: enjoy your life. Pay attention to the fleeting moments.
And if you’re lucky enough to live in this part of the world, go for a walk. Look around. Take it in. This explosion of colour only lasts a little while, and then it’s gone.
It’s really worth your time.
Here’s a photo I took a few years ago while walking in the woods.

The Quebec #meshcore network is growing by leaps and bounds. Which is great — but apparently all that growth comes with some growing pains.
Some folks who understand this shit way better than I do put together a few guidelines to keep all the new traffic from making the network shit the bed.
So please give this a read and adjust accordingly.
And by “adjust accordingly,” I mean adjust your repeaters and devices accordingly.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping the mesh happy and healthy.

My homie, filmmaking partner-in-crime, and Kanien’kehá:ka troublemaker Clifton Nicholas wrote this sharp piece on the connections between Indigenous struggles across Turtle Island and the Palestinian struggle.
Different histories, different places — but some disturbingly familiar colonial logic: land theft, displacement, fragmentation, erasure, and the machinery built to keep it all going.
This is also some of the thinking behind our documentary Red Road to Palestine.
Give it a read:

And everybody knows the best way to clean your house is with a good podcast blasting while you deal with whatever the fuck has been growing behind the toilet.
Luckily, this week The Final Straw Radio has an interview with Chris Matthias about his latest book, digging into the undercover, dangerous work antifascist comrades are doing in the United States.
It’ll make scrubbing your toilet a lot less crappy.

Wow, thanks, y’all. Obviously, I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing.
But I think that’s part of the problem with this technology: people don’t jump in because, one, it’s expensive, and two, the level of technical knowledge and equipment you supposedly need puts it out of reach for a lot of folks.
So I’m experimenting with off-the-shelf shit to see if I can slap together something that actually works for under $50 Canadian.
No fancy gear. No engineering degree. Just cheap parts, bad decisions, and science.

Little update: the charge on the solar battery didn't last overnight. That said I didn't give the battery a full charge when I opened the package (I just couldn't wait!) so I place everything outside the pickle jar and gonna try a direct solar test-full sun today! But looking for ideas for transparent containers. Really considering a glass jar.

2026-08-20 20:49:01 UTC

Another quick read this week was Timothy Snyder’s On Tyranny.
Despite Snyder’s insistence that the United States is a great country, and his really annoying calls for patriotism, the book is genuinely useful. It gives clear historical examples of how to recognize the warning signs of an emerging despotic regime — and does it in language safe enough that you can hand it to your liberal friends, or even your Republican friends.

2026-08-20 20:00:34 UTC

My newest creation: the Pickle Repeater.
It’s made from a Seeed Studio Companion — the cheapest one I could find, about $25 USD — a battery I got for free from AliExpress, and an empty plastic pickle jar.
The battery has a little solar panel built into it, so I’m testing how long this ridiculous contraption can keep running.
I think the battery normally goes for around $20 on AliExpress. So if this works, and I can make a casing that lets enough light in to charge the solar panel while also being waterproof and weatherproof, then we might have a pretty cheap no-solder repeater for people who don’t own soldering tools or just don’t want to fuck around with that shit.
Right now it’s mounted on a pool-cleaning pole I found in the garbage, because of course it is.
So far, it fucking works. I’ve been able to chat with people hundreds of kilometres away.
More pickle-based telecommunications research to come.

Anybody who’s an aging anarchist knows this reality: there’s no fucking retirement plan for spending your adult life fighting the good fight.
We build movements, organize shit, make media, feed people, fight cops and landlords, keep each other alive—and usually do it with fuck-all money.
So, naturally, when 'Margaret' needed a place for older people to live with dignity, autonomy and community, she did what anarchists have always done: she fucking built it herself.
Now this autonomous old folks’ home needs some help staying afloat.
If you’ve got a few bucks, kick them down. If you don’t, share the shit out of this.

It dawned on me while building a #gobag that hot sauce is missing from pretty much every “how to build a go-bag” list.
Huge oversight.
Imagine your house just burned down in a wildfire. You’re stuck out in the woods. All you’ve got to eat is squirrel.
That sriracha is gonna make a fucking difference, eh?
Now, if you’re not like me and don’t want to carry a big-ass bottle of sriracha around during the apocalypse, Tabasco actually makes a decent habanero sauce. And thanks to the heroic amount of vinegar in that shit, I’m pretty sure it’ll survive longer than most governments.
Also, think about the barter economy.
#Endoftheworld. Money is worthless. Society has collapsed.
But you’ve got hot sauce.
A couple squirts could probably get you a foot massage. Maybe batteries. Maybe someone watches your stuff while you take a shit.
Think about it.
Put hot sauce in your go-bag.

@nprofile…8uhr I really appreciate this. It’s because of people who actually know this stuff and take the time to explain it that the rest of us are able to get into these technologies. All of this information is incredibly valuable for helping laypeople like myself understand how these systems actually work.
That said, I think the purpose of using MeshCore can be quite different from communications that require a much higher level of security. I agree that Reticulum seems much better suited for that, and I’m really interested in its versatility, particularly its ability to use different kinds of transport and routing rather than relying exclusively on a LoRa mesh.
For my particular purposes, though, I want to see networks that are easy enough for ordinary people to use and that can provide basic communications during emergencies when the grid or telecommunications infrastructure goes down. This actually happens, even in highly industrialized countries.
One thing I find really exciting about MeshCore, and Meshtastic to a certain degree, is that their usability seems to be getting more people interested in thinking outside the corporate monopolies that control most of our communications infrastructure. Almost every time I show someone how this works—how you can send messages across an independently built network without relying on a telecom company—their mind is blown. I think breaking that spell is massively important.
My hope is that as Reticulum and the tools around it become easier to use for people who aren’t seventh-level nerds, reflashing some of the devices now scattered all over the place won’t be particularly difficult. If that happens, getting people to migrate toward a network that, at least in theory, offers significant advantages seems completely doable.
In the meantime, I’m really enjoying watching these networks grow. Seeing repeaters appearing across the border in the United States and being able to chat with people in different parts of Canada over infrastructure that people themselves are building has been genuinely eye-opening.

Today I'm so fuckin happy to find folks producing high quality video podcasts that not only empower peeps but make info accesible to a large audience without feeling preachy and dogmatic!!🙏👏
So while going through a YouTube wormhole of diy #meshcore solar repeater builds, I stumbled upon (well, the algorithm told me about...) @nprofile…pp5k
Benn's click bait video "Gadgets For People Who Don't Trust The Government" totally worked (and the thumbnail helped!) This geek porn clip masterfully embedded intro to anarchism bits interspersed the different gadgets Benn talked about. If you have not watched "Persepolis" put it at the top of your list. If you saw it when it came out, it's worth revisiting given today's context. SRLSY I feel dumb that I just watched this 20 years later after many people prodding me to to check it out.
Gonna read the graphic novel next.

Today I watched Orwell: 2 + 2 = 5, the Raoul Peck doc, and the damn thing is still rattling around in my skull.
I’m not even sure I can tell you exactly what the film was trying to do, because it does a lot. It weaves Orwell’s class analysis and anti-imperial politics into the nightmare buffet of today: surveillance, propaganda, colonialism, racism, empire, the whole rancid machinery.
And yeah, it’s dense. Maybe too dense. But maybe that’s the point. Orwell — not even his real name, which somehow I didn’t know — lived one hell of a life. A privileged dude who basically committed class suicide, not as some edgy aesthetic, but to try and serve something bigger than himself.
Whatever else the film is doing, it left me with this: Orwell gives us something to aspire to. Not as a saint. Not as a brand. But as a human being who looked at the world’s brutality and chose to betray his class instead of his conscience.

The witch hunt for “Antifa” continues in Minneapolis.
The DOJ and Homeland Security are holding a press conference today to announce charges against multiple people tied to two Minneapolis-based antifascist groups, accusing them of conspiring to “impede or injure” federal officers during opposition to immigration enforcement.
Translation: the feds are once again trying to turn resistance to ICE into a grand conspiracy so they can scare people away from showing up.

The Hormuz ‘dry run’: life without oil and petrochemicals - sober little wake-up call by @[markhburton@mstdn.social](mailto:markhburton@mstdn.social). Worth a read.
I was glad to see one of the proposed solutions involve moving away from militarism, something that mainstream environmentalists and green pundits rarely talk about.
What continues to frustrate me is how much of the burden for reducing emissions gets placed on individual consumers while some of the biggest polluters escape serious scrutiny.
The U.S. military is the world's largest institutional consumer of fossil fuels. The UK military burns through vast quantities of fuel as well. Meanwhile, a relatively small number of fossil fuel producers supply most of the carbon that enters the global economy, and the world's wealthiest consumers account for a hugely disproportionate share of emissions.
That doesn't mean individual choices don't matter. Of course they do. We need different habits, different expectations, and less wasteful ways of living, especially in wealthy countries.
But we also need to be honest about scale. The climate crisis will not be solved by shaming people at Walmart, banning plastic straws, or lecturing workers about their personal carbon footprints. The largest gains will come from confronting the systems that consume the most energy: militaries, fossil fuel companies, industrial production, and the economic model that drives endless growth. Ahem... CAPITALISM!
If everyone switched to electric cars tomorrow, we'd still have to tackle the institutions and industries responsible for the bulk of emissions. Focusing on consumers while ignoring those larger forces is a recipe for failure.

It’s gotta be humiliating to try to throw America a 250th birthday party and get turned down by Young MC. Not “young emcee” as in a category. Young MC, as in “Bust a Move,” a song old enough to rent a car, buy a house, and complain about property taxes.
And once Bret Michaels (ex-front man for Poison, remember them?), Martina McBride, Morris Day, The Commodores, and everybody else started backing away from this Trump-linked shitshow, what was left? Vanilla Ice, Flo Rida, and the ghost of a ’90s mall food court.
The funniest part is the vibe of the remaining lineup: Milli Vanilli, C+C Music Factory, Vanilla Ice — the Mount Rushmore of “wait, who actually sang this?” politics.
Perfect, honestly. A fake billionaire president throwing a fake patriotic festival with a lineup haunted by fake vocals, fake street cred, and fake nostalgia.
#America250: sponsored by fraud, lip-syncing, and the last remaining cassette tape in a Florida pawn shop.

@nprofile…8uhr @nprofile…xehw thanks for the update and looking forward to reticulum to improve because it does seem impressive. A few of us started fuckin around with meshtastic and now have switched over to meshcore and have had some success but even meshcore's user interface is a tiny bit technical for folks who just want to plug and play. Like you, we're building up a mesh network for catastrophic situations, not day to day blah blah but I'm wondering if reticulum is ever able to get to a level in which regular humans can use it, how easy would it be to switch over the network over to it? Of course we'd have to reflash all the devices, but other than that?

@nprofile…xehw exactly - the folks who put out the signal contingency plan pointed that out - that signal is still the superior option but in its absence Delta Chat is a better alternative than no encrypted comms at all. Unless you know of something better? I think the key is that people buy into it. It took a lot of work to get peeps on signal and we might be in that boat again soon. @nprofile…8uhr

Signal may actually get pushed out of Canada because of Bill C-22, a proposed “lawful access” surveillance law. Signal says it would rather walk than break encryption or start hoovering up metadata for the cops. Good.
Some folks seem to think that it could happen in the US as well.
This is a big fucking deal.
I spent years trying to get people to use PGP and failed miserably, because PGP is where usability goes to die. Signal worked because normal humans could use it. I even got my parents on it.
So what’s the plan if Signal gets blocked, banned, or bullied out? Delta Chat? SimpleX? Briar? Carrier pigeons with threat models?
Also switching to an app in Canada does not solve the problem because a lot of peeps do cross border comms so it would mean a massive shift in platforms worldwide.
Curious what folks are actually migrating to, testing, or setting up before the surveillance state shits the bed completely.

Little update on the kid MP3 player project I posted about earlier.
We ended up using an old smartphone, stripped the fuck down. No browser. No games. Just a photo viewer, a podcast app, an audiobook app, a music player, and DSub, which connects to a Sonic server generously run by a homie.
The biggest pain in the ass was getting everything installed from F-Droid and setting up the sources properly, but it works.
And here’s the wild part: something actually shifted.
Before, when he played music on the computer, he’d just stare at whatever image was on the screen. We kept trying to tell him, “Music isn’t about staring at a screen, it’s about listening.” But good luck explaining that to a kid raised inside the glowing rectangle apocalypse.
Now he plays the music, turns the screen off, and just listens.
He’s been listening to podcasts, audiobooks, comedy, and we snuck in some Public Enemy among the hundred-plus albums buried in there. He really likes Public Enemy, which is obviously a parenting win.
So far, so good. It’s become an actual music-listening apparatus, not another dopamine extraction device.
I’ll keep reporting back from the front lines.

This is one of those “the internet can actually be useful for something besides making us all worse” moments.
Kailo is only two years old and needs a second open heart surgery. His parents are taking him to another city for specialized care, and they’ll both be off work for several weeks so they can be by his side.
That means lost income, travel costs, and all the extra expenses that come with trying to keep a tiny heart warrior safe in a system that makes families crowdfund survival.
Please support this fundraiser. A few bucks, a repost, a text to a friend — it all moves the needle.

Every so often you learn about a truly remarkable person because they passed away. I knew very little about #BenMorea partly because the New York anarchist was so elusive. Alas, the leader of the "Back Up Against The Wall, Motherfucker" collective left our world, but his extraordinary life, labour, commitment to his ideals and the fact that badasses like him don't come around too often should be remembered and celebrated. Below are some articles about his incredible exploits. Read them and get inspired ! Rest in Power!

Since moving north 20 years ago I learned that when people talk about "the game" they are talking about hockey. It's religion up here. I've started playing hockey in my old age and I get the appeal. It's super fun! The capitalist enterprise that is the NHL is not fun. Right now all over Quebec cars fly the Montreal CanadiENS flag form their car window and balconies (the "ens" is important historically for reasons I can't get into. Google it) Even my kid's school ask the students to wear the "Habs" (Google that too) colors.
All that to say that I watched the fucking playoff game last night and Montreal won. But a question to hockey fans out there - Montreal won because of sheer luck and an incredible goalie, right?
