World Wide Web Consortium

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) was established in 1994 by Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee, to develop interoperable standards to lead the Web to its full potential.

We are an international multi-stakeholder community where member organizations, a full-time staff, and the public work together to build a Web based on the principles of accessibility, internationalization, privacy and security.

Please be more curious than critical. Your interactions go to real people who care and do their best 🙏

📆 23 October 2026
Beau Morgan Murrah will present "Chasing perfection: websites that pass all the test" at SeaGL (Seattle GNU/Linux Conference) in Seattle, WA, USA
Ever wanted to get (and maintain) four 100/100 scores in Lighthouse? Make automated accessibility tests like Axe DevTools pass completely? ... Even tame the most verbose and difficult of checkers, the W3C Validator? His talk will show you how to get there and that its not as hard as it seems.

W3C's mailing list archives contain millions of messages dating back to the earliest days of the web.
Gerald Oskoboiny wrote about an update to our archives to add an experimental thread panel to the message pages to allow for a clearer view of the thread structure as well as easier navigation within a thread. This post is part of a series by our Systems Team to communicate incremental improvements to our tooling.

If you have ever tried to find out what a W3C group has been working on lately, you know it often means piecing together information from several sources: publication lists, GitHub repositories, mailing lists, meeting minutes, and more.
That's why our Systems Team has introduced activity pages: one place to see what a group has been doing, month by month.
They would like to hear what you use the pages for, and what you would want them to show next. See more at:

W3C standards are open:
"An open standard is a standard that is openly accessible and usable by anyone. It is also a common prerequisite that open standards use an open license that provides for extensibility."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_standard
Our standards are developed in the open and freely available. Different companies decide whether to implement them or not. We don't (can't) control the products of individual companies. Standards are not laws.

This month of June we are also calling for sponsors —big and small— who like us would like to see reflected in web standards and web design the diversity of background, gender, experiences, expertise and skills, to contribute financially to our inclusion fund and Invited Experts support fund

Today we celebrate Carine and the other wonderful women in engineering we have in the W3C Team and in the W3C community. This is an important cause, a necessary one. We hope our readers concur and celebrate a woman in engineering (or many!) but also pause to think how you can help levelling the playing field for all women.

23 June is International Women in Engineering Day (INWED). It celebrates the outstanding achievements of women engineers around the world.
In the spirit of the day and in celebration of the achievements of women who have helped to make the web, we wanted to highlight W3C’s @nprofile…5rx0 whose role is instrumental in bringing to fruition web standards that form the building blocks of the modern web and that connect and empower humanity.

At the Brussels seminar on Human Rights and ICT Standardization, W3C contributed to the discussion on how human-rights principles can enter technical work while design choices are still open. The post connects Ethical Web Principles, accessibility, horizontal review, threat and harm modeling, and the practical cost of participation: making assumptions, impacts, and responsibilities visible before they become infrastructure.

The Verifiable Credentials Working Group has published a First Public Working Draft for the Quantum-Resistant Cryptosuites v1.0 specification. This document defines several Data Integrity Cryptosuites for use when generating a digital signature.
This new spec will provide digital signature schemes for verifiable credentials, and other data payloads, using the best stable quantum-resistant algorithms known today.

As part of our commitment and continued focus on diversity and inclusion we annually report on gender and geographic diversity of W3C's governing bodies.
This year again, we want to financially help cover TPAC 2026 meeting travel costs for W3C participants from groups under-represented in the web community, who without financial support would not be able to attend TPAC in person.

The Internationalization Working Group has published HTML Ruby Markup Extensions as a W3C Candidate Recommendation Snapshot.
Ruby, a form of interlinear annotation, are short runs of text alongside the base text. They are typically used in East Asian documents to indicate pronunciation or to provide a short annotation. This specification revises and extends the markup model established by HTML to express ruby.
