We’ve been missing the point talking about “decentralized” social media, says New_ Public’s @nprofile…wr93.

How can we make the feed be less of a doomscroll and more like sitting on a stoop or porch?
Rudy Fraser considers his platform Blacksky, the largest Black community on the open social web, as a true third space — where folks can chat, hang, and see what’s going on.
This speech is refreshingly personal and rooted in community organizing, with a hopeful look at the open social web.

“We believe the heart of social networks are people — not platforms or protocols.”
This is @nprofile…0gpy from @nprofile…233h, the non-profit behind Bounce.
Bounce makes it easy for users to shift between the two biggest open social web protocols: ActivityPub, which powers Mastodon, and AT Protocol, which powers Bluesky.

Big Tech social media isn't really social anymore. We scroll more than we post, and we consume content more than we connect with others.
Research from danah boyd suggests we should call it what it really is: parasocial media.

Everyone’s posting about 2016, with a heavy dose of nostalgia.
In 2016, Instagram switched their default feed from purely reverse chronological feed to algorithmically-sorted. In retrospect, this marks the beginning of a shift towards a passive, spoon-fed internet.
Product design matters – people are hungry for digital tools that actually allow them to feel connected to friends, family, and community.
