“We are a rich country with supposedly universal healthcare. Raising jobseeker to the poverty line (about $37,000 a year) would cost roughly $11bn this year.” Greg Jericho, Guardian, 170926.
We can’t afford it? Well we can afford to spend $35m per day for the next 25 years to get AUKUS, which many independent defence experts say will never happen. #Auspol

“Currently, jobseeker payments are almost half the poverty line – roughly $300 a week less than what would be needed for a single person to be right on the poverty line. The only time this was not the case was during the Covid pandemic when the Morrison government effectively doubled jobseeker temporarily. During 2020, the death rate of those on jobseeker dropped 32%”
Greg Jericho, Guardian, 170926. #Auspol

"A country that cannot recognise a duty of care to future generations is not merely failing environmentally. It is failing morally. It is admitting that short-term political survival matters more than the safety, stability and dignity of the people who come after us."

“Above the streets of Tehran, the weapons bay of an F-35 fighter jet opens and a missile streaks groundward, raining death and destruction on the city below.
The mechanism that allows the jet to rapidly open its bay doors and fire is made in only one place in the world: a factory in suburban Melbourne. More than 700 of the fighter jet’s “critical pieces” are manufactured in Victoria alone.” Ben Doherty, Guardian, 140326. We are complicit in an illegal war. #Auspol

“ … the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change found global emissions needed to be cut by 43% between 2019 and 2030 to keep the Paris agreement goal of limiting heating to 1.5C above preindustrial levels in play. We are light years from that.” Adam Morton, Guardian, 120226

I think Richard Dawkins explained our behaviour in 'The Selfish Gene'. We've evolved to protect our own survival today, not the survival of others, now or in the future.

"A number of critical factors allowed Australians to elect a more climate-forward government despite total inundation with climate disinformation by the Murdoch media and other conservative news outlets; {including} several key attributes of Australian elections: compulsory voting, absence of partisan districting {gerrymandering} and preferential or “ranked choice” voting." "Woodside’s North West Shelf extension {is} a “carbon bomb” ,..., According to Woodside’s own reports, the project extension will be responsible for 87.9m tonnes of CO2-e per year, including the greenhouse gases released when the gas is sold and burned, mostly overseas. This is the equivalent to about 20% of Australia’s current annual carbon footprint." Graham Readfearn, Climate and environment correspondent. Guardian, 120925. "How can you seriously say you are committed to reaching net zero emissions by 2050 while allowing a potent greenhouse gas to be produced for decades beyond that? Especially when national climate pollution is not coming down at anything like the pace promised, or required?" Adam Morton, Climate and Environment Editor, Guardian, 040725. Of course Labor have approved Woodside's massive expansion of fossil fuel extraction, processing, use and export until 2070. Most of us voted for this. I don't expect our descendants will ever forgive us.

"Anthony Albanese has made a remarkable U-turn on protecting nature. A year ago he was backing his environment minister, Tanya Plibersek, to revamp the 25-year-old national law and create a national Environment Protection Agency (EPA) to make key decisions and impose beefed-up penalties." "the richest 10% will get $27bn this year in tax breaks from the capital gains tax discount, negative gearing and the superannuation tax concessions" Greg Jericho, Guardian, 270225. Yet Labor can't afford to raise welfare benefits. Vote Green or Teal. #auspol.

"In 2023-24 the government delivered a budget surplus of $15.8bn. It did not do this because it gained more revenue than expected; ... It delivered a surplus because even though at the time nearly 22% of retirees were living in poverty, the government chose not to do anything about it." Greg Jericho, Guardian, 200325. That's how Labor looks after low income earners. Vote Green or Teal. #auspol

"But starting a nuclear power industry from scratch in Australia is a nonsensical idea for many reasons – not least because it is too expensive and will take too long.
In the context of the coming federal election, the nuclear policy is arguably a red herring – one designed to distract voters from a Coalition policy program that slows the transition to renewables and drags out the life of dirty and unreliable coal-fired power." I think Dutton, despite his malevolent deeds and words and past failures, is supported by about half of us is because of the Murdoch and Stokes propaganda.

"If he’s good as his word, Dutton would attempt to put the brakes on investment in large-scale solar and windfarms and battery storage, which has just taken off and begun to approach the pace needed to get close to Labor’s goal of 82% renewable energy by 2030 and replace a fleet of coal-fired power plants nearing the end of their lives."
