I finally gathered my thoughts on the avalanche of vibe coded clones of proprietary software, and the potential impacts (positive and negative) that it could have on #Linux.
In short, I think this might be THE biggest opportunity we ever had to completely destroy every user lock-in measure Windows or macOS ever had, but that comes with significant costs in terms of open file formats and open source alternatives:

Here is this week's #Linux and #OpenSource news video, in which the ensloppification is everywhere, Bitwarden makes some licensing changes, LibreOffice breaks download records, and more !

And for today's video, it's time for #KDE #Plasma 6.8!
This new version ditches x11 for Wayland, adds the Union theming system (beta), fixes a lot of remote desktop issues, improves the login manager, and adds a TON of small touches everywhere, and some pretty big performance improvements too!

Here is this week's #Linux and #OpenSource news video, bright and early (for me at least), in which we now have 2 different ways of getting the full Adobe suite on Linux:

I've been trying out a few web browsers on #Linux recently, and I thought it would be fun to make a video out of that, so here is my own ranking of the 14 web browsers I tried recently on Linux:
As usual, highly subjective, might not coincide with your own preferences :)

Time for this week's #Linux and #OpenSource news video! In this one, #Ubuntu adds a Windows-like tiling layout picker, Firefox's redesign is maybe a bit too rounded, there's a proposed Flatpak-like tool for CLI & developer tools, and a lot more:

It feels to me (in my very #Linux bubble at least), that people are getting extremely fed up with #Windows 11, so I decided to take a look at the actual data we have on market share, and give my opinion on why Windows fails the core jobs of an operating systems, and why people are choosing to move away, more than they did in the past at least:

Since #Linux is now 35 years old, I took a look at where we are in terms of desktop, server, smartphone and gaming, so see the massive progress we made as a family of operating systems, what works well, and what still needs work.
Year of the Linux desktop? No, but there's definitely some kind of strong push right now!

I've had the beta for Tuxedo OS "Debian edition" for a week and a half now, and I've been using it as my main production system (yes I know, beta and prod shouldn't go together. Call me adventurous!).
So here's a deep dive into what it does, how it works, and why that's probably my new favorite #Linux distro, now that it's based on Debian testing and not Ubuntu LTS:

Here is this week's #Linux and #OpenSource News video!
In this one, the AUR is having more and more problems, Valve funds Mesa drivers for Windows, GoG works on a Linux client, and the Framework Laptop 13 Pro looks like a good pick to run Linux:

This week's #Linux and #OpenSource News video is a bit early this week, as I won't be available tomorrow (another #Warhammer tournament!).
In this one, we have Torvalds talking about A.I. in two different ways, and also talking about the "social" aspect of Open Source, we have Wayland beating x11 in gaming benchmarks, and Age Verification growing quietly in a lot of countries:

So, I have spent 30 days with a #Linux phone (#Ubuntu Touch): here are the apps I used, what I tweaked, what worked well, what was hacky, what didn't work at all, and why I'll be sticking with it.

It has been a while since I looked at other operating systems (other than #Linux of course), so I decided to do another one of these videos.
I looked at macOS 26, and it has improved significantly since the last time I used it. I still feel #Linux desktops are mostly better, but there are a few things we can learn in there:

Over the years, I've managed to lock myself into a corner made of proprietary software, even though I use #linux

It's been about 5 years since I've looked at Ubuntu Touch (or UBPorts?), so it was time I revisited this alternative OS.
And now with Waydroid in a really usable state, it is really close to being fully usable for me.
Let's take a look!

As a #Linux user, you sort of need to be a bit careful with the tech (hardware or software) you go with, and I've made a few mistakes in the past years, so I felt it would be cool to look at my worst tech purchases as a Linux user, but also in general:

In this week's #Linux and #OpenSource news show, we have some trouble brewing for our Open Source office suites, with OnlyOffice beefing with EuroOffice and Nextcloud, and COllabora having problems with the Document Foundation, the entity that manages LibreOffice.

I've recently dabbled with #Wine and Winboat, and while it was all pretty fun, my conclusion is still that these solutions really don't help with running Windows programs on #Linux all that much, and don't help with "serious / professional" adoption.

#KDE Plasma 6.4 should be released today, so here is my loo at all the things that were changed or added, and there are a lot.
In my opinion, KDE is currently the best Linux desktop, mixing simplicity, polish, and easily accessible power user features, and Plasma 6.4 adds a lot more quality of life on top of that:

CORRECTION FOR THE NEWS VIDEO:
Looks like Denmark's Ministry for Digitization is not in fact moving to Linux right now.
The original interview given by the Danish Ministry said that they planned to move to Linux, but this apparently was a misunderstanding between the Ministry and the outlet.
They've since corrected the article, they're moving to just LibreOffice, but not Linux, at least not in the near future.

#Ubuntu 25.04 will be released today (maybe it already is), so here is my look at this new update!
The TLDR is: I thought it wouldn't have that much, but it turns out that between #GNOME 48, APT 3.0, Nvidia dynamic boost, and a new default app, there's a lot to cover!
Also, props to Xubuntu for the move to XFCE 4.20, that's going to be a big change for Xubuntu users!

To be clear: I’m not saying the GIMP name is awesome and should be kept at all costs. It can change.
What I’m saying is: focus on the cool stuff first, praise the devs for their cool work. Don’t turn all the cool stuff into a battle. We can talk about the name AND also think the devs delivered some great stuff.
Firefox is adding excellent features. Sure, the Mozilla stuff sucks, but the browser is great. We can give praise AND also raise issues, not everything needs to be back or white.

2025-03-18 08:43:01 UTC

GIMP: makes incredible progress towards being an amazing image editing tool
People: « the name has a kinky or bad connotation in one language, and there are no screenshots, WTH.»
Priorities. They’re important.

@nprofile…tnk6 I don’t think you understand what generative AI does, cause it’s clearly not « reading and understanding » anything.
It’s using the contents of licensed works without permission to generate paraphrasing, on a massive scale, which makes money for the AI company, without authorization, or licensing deals with the original creators. The very definition of stealing.

I tried the @nprofile…czc7 InfinityFlex 14, and took the opportunity to look at how well, or badly, major #Linux desktops ran on touchscreens.
I tested #KDE and #GNOME, and well, let's say the one that looks the most touch friendly, really wasn't...
The laptop is really nice, though!

Time for this week's #Linux and #OpenSource News video, with some weird stuff happening...

As @nprofile…vcea Plasma 6.3 should be released today, here is my look at the myriad of new touches that make this release a very, very polished one;
And since this #Linux desktop also has a sort of "official" laptop in the form of the KDE @nprofile…uvkz VI, I also tested that in the same video :)

Here is this week's #Linux and #OpenSource News video!
In this one, we have #AI coming to #Fedora in the future, the lead developer and maintainer on Asahi Linux quitting the kernel after some more #Rust related problems, and a lot more:

Last week, I asked my community to rank #Linux distros, specifically desktop distros.
After compiling the results and editing things together, here are the results: the distros my community prefers, the ones they don't like, and judging from how many people ranked each distro, or didn't rank them, I also gave a measure of popularity, even though it's clearly imperfect statistically :)

Early video today, just because I didn't feel like waiting for the usual publishing time :)
In this #Linux and #OpenSource News video, we have the Freedesktop.org project (and all it hosts, so Mesa, X.org, Wayland, and more) looking for new, expensive hosting.
We also have #Debian leaving X/Twitter (congrats on that, btw), Facebook blocking links and mentions of Linux for a while, and more!

@nprofile…tnk6 Sure, because AI only uses « information ». No films, videos, images, scientific papers…
Sorry, but that’s the worst take.

OpenAI accusing DeepSeek, another AI model, of stealing their outputs to train their own model is the funniest thing I’ve read this year.
« This thing is stealing our work that we built by stealing other people’s work and paraphrasing it incorrectly ». Peak 2025.

Since a lot of people seem to have completely missed the instructions on my previous Poll and just voted willy nilly on distros they never used, thus skewing the results, I'm redoing the poll...
Sorry for people who already answered / shared, please consider voting again :D

I'm running a small poll to let people rate various desktop #Linux distributions, so I can make a "reality check" video and see what the community really likes, and dislikes.
I'll turn the results into a video next week.
The poll is open until next Wednesday, don't hesitate to share it widely so it's as representative as possible ! It's also shared on my Community Page on Youtube!

#Linux Mint 22.1 is now out, and I took a look at what's new in there, it's a bigger release than I expected:
- Updates to Cinnamon
- More options all around
- Better #Wayland session
- Entirely revamped tooling around apt and deb packages, which is going to help keep this format in a good state

Meta: « We don’t like moderation, we think it’s censorship, so we’re going to let everyone say what they want ».
People post link to Pixelfed as they leave the soon to be Twitter-like cesspool of fake information and hate.
Meta: « let’s censor links to other services like Pixelfed ».
Very coherent stance there, Zuck.

Just like every year, I took a look at a few big moves that happened for #Linux and #OpenSource in 2024, and why I think 2025 will be a much bigger year:
Linux changed in 2024, but 2025 will be MUCH BIGGER

@nprofile…wzq0 In name only. The story of the 1st one is recapped throughout the 2nd one, and the gameplay of the first one has aged quite a bit, IMO.
