The next section of trail consists of a 15km road walk into Kaitaia, followed by 6km of walking on state highway 1 and 15 further kilometres of quieter roads to reach the next section of track. Initially, I had assumed I would walk all or most of this. ...

The urge to think and write was too strong to ignore. So for three hours, I honored those things in the albergue in silence.
Once we had to leave the albergue at 8 am, my Italian and Argentinian brothers and I found a cafe that was open. We wanted somewhere warm to hunker down until the cathedral of León opened.

18. Water in the Desert
I looked across the river. The churning water was so thick with silt that the flow had turned a milky gray-green. A coyote’s lonely squalling unfurled like smoke in the dawn, unanswered. Just a fingernail sliver of a moon above the horizon.
Slowly, heavily, I pulled my feet up and out of the quicksand. The gelatinous muddy bank sucked at my shoes and almost took one, but didn’t. On solid ground I passed a sign warning of flash floods and the many thousands of tumbleweeds caught up in the barbed wire fence. ...
