I would like to announce a tragedy, firefox restarted for an update and lost it's window history state.
I have subsequently lost dozens of tabs that were not so interesting to bookmark, but were too interesting to close...
If you have any tips, please let me know. Otherwise, please send your condolences.

For years, once climate change became undeniable, a section of society insisted that we didn't need to change our climate impact.
Instead, they said, we will invest and "adapt".
Today, 71% of England is officially in drought. Crop yields will be their worst in years, and livestock are eating their winter rations because the pastures are dead.
It's not just farms: almost 3000 excess human deaths so far and economic productivity down.
Are you feeling adapted yet?

At default error correction, this is 42 bytes.
At min/max it's 53/24 bytes.

Needing internet to create internet is mostly because I don't want to have to manage physical infrastructure, I'd rather just tunnel.
But it's an easy way to add additional services (like IPv6, unfiltered access, etc) that you don't get from a retail ISP.

2026-08-06 15:15:29 UTC

@nprofile…nds5 @nprofile…dmz3 you need some upstream providers to get data flowing to your core router, yes. These can be cheap/free. My transit is provided by the org that hosts my router + freetransit ( @nprofile…9tct ). In my instance, both are free.
You also need some way of connecting your core router to your home. For this, I tunnel over my domestic retail ISP with wireguard.

Had a really good time at EMF this year giving telekline its first real run out. Thanks to @nprofile…6fvl for lots of inspiration and services and @nprofile…tpfq for EMF-IX.
Pictured is the mess of the network. The main stack up is a Cisco VG320 providing POTS voice, a Cisco 4331 providing network connectivity, and a Versa 4024 DSLAM mixing them into VDSL.
On the left are two "subscribers", one with landline voice + broadband via a tplink consumer router, the other just with landline phone.

@nprofile…09mr codeberg's software remains free and open source - they can choose not to host gen ai, but the license says they can't stop you setting up an instance that does.
The GPL protects your freedoms to run, modify, and share the source code, but it doesn't produce a requirement that services running it must allow you to use their specific instance for any specific thing.
I hope this helps understanding your GPL freedoms. Let me know if there's anything else.

EMF project plans beginning to come together more clearly in my own mind:
* Mini PC in EMF-IX as an ISP core
* CuTEL providing wholesale ISP connectivity
At the tent:
* Consumer router in the tent providing access to the internet over VDSL last mile.
At the village:
* Cisco ISR4331 getting VDSL last mile, as well as LTE failover via EMF GSM.
* Telekline mini rack with 4-8 modems providing "some service". Telecoms via CuTEL POTS, and internetworking via the Cisco.

While really designed as a bit of art, it did bring up some really interesting discussions in the lab.
For example, if you and your backgammon partner had full knowledge of the upcoming dicerolls, would you play differently?
Is there a tabletop RPG mechanic where you can be "clairvoyant" and see the next row of dice rolls, meaning you can try to manipulate upcoming turn-taking to get high value rolls (or conversely, get opponent players/NPCs to unwittingly catch critical fails)?

* DEFRA LIDAR is UK Open Government License.
* Rackmount data isn't clearly licensed, but is generated by boxes.py - GPL.
* Additional geo data from OSM is ODbL (but didn't go into the final cut, was just a tool to reference data against).
PrusaSlicer/XL Firmware: (A)GPL.
If anyone has leads on a lightburn replacement, I'm all ears.

@nprofile…7nl0 I have a confession: after a couple of test cuts, I couldn't get any real progress on the fibre laser, I used the CO2 instead.
I don't know what it was, but it was taking 10+ passes to get any marking on the fibre laser. It would have taken a long long time.
I also really didn't want to mess around trying to get the registration right between the 4 quadrants when rotating the different corners under the fibre laser, I'd never have gotten them to line up.
Definitely should do the work Mac.

Related: the Mac Mini has a small IR sensor for use as a media centre with a remote control.
I illuminated that with some oblique portion of the 30W of IR laser cutter beam.
There's a real chance that sensor is toast, but I'd never use it anyway. Whoops.
Finally, I would also have spent some time cleaning up the Debian swirl if I realised how many "bits" it had coming off the main swirl. It's deliberate, but on the laser it just looks a bit unclean/bitty, like a mistake.

Some things to note:
* I was going to do this on our new fibre laser but didn't - it's both too small (it was originally going to be 4 carefully referenced cuts, rotating a new corner in each time, which is what the green quadrants were for) and too slow progress. Turns out the CO2 laser did a better job getting through the anodised layer *and* fits the whole cut in 1 pass.
* The laser isn't 100% parallel and disperses after the focal point. This deposited some energy on the plastic/labels.

4. Take a zoomed out picture of the Mac from far away, to give you a minimally distorted reference image.
5. Put it all in inkscape, using the known size of the Mac to scale to reference. Trace a red "keep out" layer we can use in lightburn to avoid tracing the laser over the plastic when we're doing the aluminium etch. (The apple logo gets a debian swirl in the end.)
6. Chuck it all in lightburn.
Cost:
* Mac (recycled): £0.00
* Open Govt Data: £0.00
* QGIS: £0.00
* Laser: £2.20 (11 min run)

The Mac Mini was a bit more involved, but also more interesting.
1. Download LIDAR heighmap data from DEFRA (I used this data when I was doing my masters - great resource).
2. Whack it all into QGIS and normalise the tiles.
3. Decimate the data (went from 1m to 200m per pixel resolution) to smooth, and then run contour analysis. Export as SVG.

For the rack mount, a quick spin through OpenSCAD after taking measurements of where the mounting screw holes are on the side of the switch.
I have generic 10" 1U and 2U patterns made from https://boxes.hackerspace-bamberg.de/ that really help.
After that, fire the model through PrusaSlicer and it's 1h from "print" to part, and some M3 screws to attach.

A successful night in the hackspace - new old Mac Mini laser engraved and another successful 10" rack conversion.
Process follows.

If anyone in the UK (especially the South East/London) has unusual telephones they would donate or sell for a modest fee, I would be interested on behalf of the Reading hackerspace, rLab.
As long as they work or are easily repairable for a standard POTS network/landline.
See below a Dutch ex-prison service phone, as well as a ruggedised phone used airside at Heathrow.
Boosts welcomed.
