📝 Become worthless (to tech companies) #ai #tech #politics #uspol
Tech companies and their executives have, broadly, moved to align themselves with investors and adopted a posture of, often, disdain or outright hostility towards their users and employees. If tech companies don't value you, why provide value to them? If they back political positions hostile to your interests, why not return that hostility?

At the moment I am writing this, bad internet bills are being proposed across the US, Canada, Europe, and the UK. They're using the usual tactics: they claim they're fighting for kids or fighting security risks, but in general, that's what surveillance and censorship bills have always claimed.

I work from a big corner desk and part of the space on that desk is taken up by a small TV positioned in the corner. I read a lot on the web. I almost never look at websites, though. I consume almost everything through an RSS reader. 📝 If your content is only on social media, I'm not going to see it #Tech #Socialmedia #Rss
If you only post on social media, I won't see it. If you don't have an RSS feed, I won't follow it, I won't subscribe to it. I don't want want your app because I don't want a homescreen full of apps for publications and platforms.

📝 Alternatives to US tech platforms #Development #Webdev #Tech #Politics #Socialmedia
With the US rapidly devolving into a failed state with the endorsement (both full-throated and tepid) of many tech leaders, I’d urge you to reconsider your use of any tech platforms and tools offered by companies based here. Donating to a fascist’s inauguration isn’t a shrewd business decision, it’s a demonstration that you’re...

@nprofile…xlhv Oh man, Misanthropic sounds really solid. The new Grave Infestation, Imperial Triumphant and Rothadas LPs are on my list and I'll check out the new Drudkh. I *was* looking forward to the new Vacuous record but the single sounds...pretty lame. :/

The world is a dangerous place, and complexity abounds, moreso today it seems than it ever has been. Navigating a world filled with AI-fueled disinformation, corporate-backed algorithmic control, political information silos and worse is no easy feat. So how can we trust what we see? How can we communicate safely?...

📝 Chronological feeds, slow feeds #Tech #Socialmedia #Rss
RSS has always been the best way to consume news online. I first used Google Reader soon after it launched (RIP), have cycled through Feedbin, Inoreader and NewsBlur and the slow, orderly chronologically ordered list of items the form provides puts the user in control of what they consume and the pace at which they consume it.

🔗 New tech gets chatter (2016) via Metafizzy #Development #Tech
My text editor of choice, TextMate, is old. Version 1 was released in 2004. Version 2 was announced in 2009 and has been in alpha & beta release since 2012. TextMate is old enough that a whole new generation of text editors have emerged and eclipsed it, most notably Sublime Text and Atom. They have built upon TextMate's successes and learned from its pain points. But I...

🔗 Faster Horses via @nprofile…hp3e #Ai #Tech
There's a famous quote that people in tech like to use. It was supposedly said by Henry Ford about the invention of the automobile:
If I had asked my customers what they wanted, they would have said 'faster horses'.
There is no actual evidence that Ford ever said this - regardless, it has become a favorite adage for people talking about creativity and innovation.

I know this is a rather dramatic headline and that some people might incorrectly assume that I’m mad about some particular piece of hardware or software, but it should come as no surprise that I’m hopping mad at Tim Cook for how he’s ingratiating himself to President Trump again.
