Turtle Bower Retreat wants you!
@npub1x7n…rzwr is the one who came up with the idea of #TurtleBowerRetreat, a spoonie convalescent retreat for 4-6weeks over the winter at a camp or meditation retreat in southern Ontario. She says "There's a lot of power in rest and kindness and vegetables. I'd like a chance to prove that."
Turtle Bower Retreat is described by Valerie as "Basically a temporary care home for the chronically ill. A quiet place to rest, specific to our needs (unscented, masked and/or isolated cohort), with god nutrition, opportunities for (very!!!) gentle movement/stretching, coaching on turning parasympathetic system back on to get into deep rest."
My (Somcak) goal as a project manager is to put together a checklist of how to get this done (so it can be replicated in other local places) and shepherd this into being by guiding volunteers along the way.
So what can you do? Do you have ideas on what you would want to do at a spoonie retreat? Or maybe there's a recipe for a nutritious meal that serves lots of people? Do you know someone who would be interested in attending or volunteering or both? Even if you can't attend, you can contribute to making this awesome and something that could be replicated anywhere in the world.
Reply here or DM me. All ideas welcome. My goal over the next month or so is to gather ideas and volunteers to start fundraising to make Turtle Bower a reality.

I finally got out to the garden (in the front yard) today to trim down and pull out my tomato plants. The plan to put them in a bag didn't work, so I pulled up the box the cat and dog food came in from Chewy to wrangle them into. There were lots more tomatoes on the vine, but it's been below 50⁰F/10⁰C at night all week and yinz told me they wouldn't be good. I thanked them for growing and slipped them in the box with the vines. Then I carried the box to the dumpster. I felt wrong for that, but I have no way to compost and couldn't find a community place to compost or dispose of it.
I do still have some pre-picked green tomatoes in a box with 2 apples ripening. I'm hoping to get another batch of tomato sauce out of them next weekend.

On the way home from Target after work, there were 2 cop cars behind me and there were cars in front of me waiting at the light by the Tim Hortons. The light changed, we started to go and a guy jumps out from the bushes and throws something in front of the car ahead of me. I break hard the cops swarm around me and the car in front of me from all directions! I couldn't get out, I was blocked in. The cops have their guns drawn and arrest the 3 people in the car in front of me. After they were all cuffed and in cop cars, they moved some of the cars so I could get out. It was fucking scary.

#Gardening question about tomatoes:
My plants have lots green cherry tomatoes on the vine, some are red (picking those tomorrow). The overnight lows are in the high 50s F (~15C) for the next week or so, but the daytime highs are only in the 60s F (~18C) for the next week.
Are my tomatoes done, or is there still a chance the ones on the vine will ripen?

I woke up in the middle of the night determined to catch up on the housework today. So far I've made a grocery run, dropped books off at the library, got coffee at Dunkin, came back home, brewed coffee for iced coffee for the week, put together a pot roast in the slow cooker for dinner, picked cherry tomatoes, made tomato soup, did dishes, have laundry going, Swiffered the first floor, and folded some laundry. Now I've just got to chop and freeze the remaining onions and put my meds together for the week. I'm exhausted!

I have a lot of cherry tomatoes to pick tomorrow (it's raining now so the tomatoes can wait). I'm sick of eating them! So, I need to know how to freeze them. Like do I need to cook and mash them? Can I freeze them if they're cut in half? Gardeners, how do you keep your tomatoes frozen for winter?

I went out today to pick some tomatoes, it's been 4 days so I knew it would be a lot. I had no idea that I would fill a 6-cup container with cherry tomatoes! I made a "Greek" salad with some of them: feta, olives, cucumber chunks, cherry tomatoes cut in half. I'm saving some of the not quite ripe ones for a couple days and will harvest again and make some tomato sauce.

It was on the classic rock station, and I'm in a red state, so it most definitely leans right. And yes, Carney was absolutely right to walk away from negotiations.

2026-08-24 12:24:25 UTC

One of the news stories I heard on the radio on the way in to work was that Canada's PM has decided "Canada is at war with the US over tariffs." Nothing in the reporting talked about the US's negotiation requirement that French has to go away, or that the US should be able to veto any of Canada's other trade deals or any of the other awful things this administration was requiring of Canada.
It's only because I'm chronically online that I know that Canada did the right thing and stopped the negotiations. The US has no right to control Canada that way. It's the average USian who's going to pay the price, and the media is blaming Canada, not the Trump administration. Ugh.

Hubby got called by the endocrinology office today to make an appointment but he's so exhausted he couldn't talk on the phone. So he texted me the number and I called to schedule the appointment for him.
I called the number and pressed 1 for scheduling with endocrinology. She brought him up in the computer and said "oh! I need to transfer you to endocrinology-oncology because that's where the surgeons are." Okay.... Talk to the endo-oncology scheduler and she said "let me look. It seems the soonest is September 8th. Wait, the note... Oh! We have Monday at 8:45. Can he do that?"
So this tells me it's serious about the parathyroid and he's going straight to a surgeon and they worked him into the schedule. That's scary, but good. I'll be at the appointment with him.

2026-08-06 23:14:33 UTC

Hubby fell twice today. He's fine but the cause of it is still unknown. He's in bed now, I'm still up for a bit.
So this afternoon at 3 was Bucky the dachshund's annual vet exam. He's the picture of health, friendly, and she couldn't believe he's 12!
Anyway, hubby was home getting ready to go to his doctor's appointment at 4:15. Vet ran late, got home at 3:45, and hubby was passed out on the floor from leaning over to tie his shoes. Get Bucky sorted, get hubby up and ask if he needs to go to the hospital. He said no. So I ferry him to the car, and drive the 25 minutes to the doctor's office.
Doctor has narrowed it down to his liver or parathyroid. She was a little concerned about his fainting, but not concerned enough to send us to the hospital. Hubby has a liver ultrasound next Friday and has a referral to endocrinology which I'll call tomorrow to see where we are in the process.
We went to Sam's Club (warehouse grocery store) afterwards. Quick trip to get the last of the month's groceries. Go home, unpack everything, feed the dogs. Then hubby got up to get some pie, wobbled, and nearly collapsed to the floor. I was in the kitchen and caught him and shepherded him back to the couch. After the pie he said he's feeling better so he went upstairs to bed. I told him he's not allowed to get up.
He starts vitamin D tomorrow, a 3 month regime of weekly megadose: 50,000IU. She also ordered him to get outside 15 minutes a day to get additional vitamin D.

Hubby has been dealing for a year with extreme fatigue, brain fog, and low libido. He finally got in with my primary care nurse practitioner 2 weeks ago. We got his bloodwork done Friday and the results came back that there were issues with his liver and possibly thyroid. The NP wrote him a long note today, scheduled him for follow-up bloodwork today and an appointment Thursday. He's also on the list for an ultrasound of his liver.
Some of the labs came back from today before the NP left and his parathyroid is producing too much hormone, so now he's referred to endocrinology for that. Well have more answers Thursday when we meet with her.
Keep your fingers and paws crossed that it's an easy fix.

2026-07-30 22:05:41 UTC

Just got the MRI results from radiology:
1. Partial tear of the gluteus medius tendon.
2. Gluteal cuff tendinopathy with adjacent intramuscular edema.
3. Tendinopathy of the hamstring origins. No associated discrete tear.
4. Mild right hip osteoarthritis.
We knew about the arthritis from X-rays, but that is on my inner hip, not the other hip that was in pain. Items 1&3 could be the "pop" I heard and felt. Item 2 is what we thought it was and would need surgery to drain the edema.
Within a week I'll hear from my doctor about the next steps. I'm glad the MRI shows that something is wrong.
Please no medical or health advice.

I sleep with a comforter, no top sheet. The comforter I had was made for kids and is at least 16 years old. This past week it developed a hole and Bucky has been destuffing it. So I made the trek to Target today to find a replacement. I headed for the kids' bedding because I wanted something fun and similar to the one I had. Did you know comforters start at $40 and range up to $200 at Target!??!
I think I found a replacement for $40. It's the same thickness and weight. It's cotton and it feels like it will have the same sleeping temperature. The cotton is brushed though which feels different but tolerable. We'll see how I sleep tonight. I saved the old one in case this one doesn't work out.

#Garden update! I have harvested a total of 8 delicious cherry tomatoes, I have about 12 bunches of green ones still growing. The mystery tomato plant (I got it at a mutual aid fundraiser and it was a volunteer tomato plant from someone's raised beds) has 3 palm-sized tomatoes that are light green with dark green stripes. I'm interested to see what they turn out to be.
My carrot greens were turning brown so I plucked them, and they are tiny but very sweet! We already ate them. They were about thumb-length.
My bell pepper plant died. This was a longshot plant after my cat had eaten all the leaves off it before I had a change to plant it. The dill died, I think I overwatered it.
The chives are still going strong as is the lettuce. I didn't harvest either today as they need a little more growth to be able to be a salad.

Hubby: I don't know about pineapple, but I know Heinz beans don't belong in pizza.
Me: I've got to post that! [So I posted it]

This is a very Somcak color palette! Like the majority of my clothes, jewelry, and household linens fit in this color palette.

I did last year and continue to do the exercises. It didn't really help.

I'm trying to #releasethebutt (relax my butt muscles which are currently freaking tense as my hip is hurting and my butt is trying to lessen the pain by being tense or something)

Gertie had the hiccups.

I got up this morning worried about finances. We'll maybe *just* squeak by this month.
Brienne the tortie cat was giving Pippin the kitten a bath, which calmed me a bit.

I went to Sonic for a Diet cherry limeade and some tater tots an hour ago. It's 101⁰F/38⁰C with 70% humidity. Even with the AC on in the car I was sweltering. I'm just now back down to a comfortable temperature.
And my city is going ahead with their fireworks tonight that people have been waiting for since noon. Unbelievable.

I just had my first tomato that I grew myself!! It was orange-red in color and I was watering my garden before the heat of the day and I just plucked it and ate it! The rest of the bunch should be ready tomorrow or Sunday.

I gave you all a follow. The gardening "bug" really got me this year. I've been watching people here garden for a few years, and I finally decided to give it a go this year. So glad I did!

Gardening has been the most exciting, low effort, cheap fun I've had in years! It's so fulfilling to see it all grow!!

2026-07-02 14:45:24 UTC

Yinz!! I just had my first carrot from my garden!! I was so excited I ate it before I thought to take a pic! It was a spindly 4-inches long (10 cm) and was really sweet!!
I was out there watering before the heat of the day, and tugged on a carrot to see how they were doing. I think they need a few more weeks.
And!! One of the tomato bunches is yellow-orange!!! I'll have my first tomatoes to eat soon!!!

I know you all think Gertie is the cutest puppy ever, but you've got to understand that 4.8 pounds of dog launching herself on your face at 5:30 am on a weekend because the sun is out and therefore she must be played with is not cute. It's adorable.
