I noticed there is a new movie out about Jimmy Stewart.
In 1960, the US Air Force was working on a strange missile shaped like a lens. It had a peculiar code name "Pye Wacket".
The urban legend goes that it was named by Colonel James "Jimmy" Stewart. It seams that Jimmy was also starting with Kim Novak in a movie named "Bell, Book, and Candle". Novak had a witch's familiar named Pye Wacket.

Cuttlefish have an unusual feeding technique.
They use active camouflage to sneak up on their prey. When in range, they launch two extendable feeding tentacles. These dart out grab their prey, and instantly drag said prey into the cuttlefish mouth.
In mouth, the prey is injected with paralysis venom, and devoured by the cuttlefish beak.
Sounds to me like a cross between Captain Nemo and a Steampunk James Bond villain...

Two of my favorite YA novels in one book by Andre Norton. EBook is a free download from the Baen free library.
Contains novels Star Guard and Star Rangers. First is about the people of Earth chafing under the second class citizenship offered them by the alien galactic empire.
Second is about a military starship and it's crew trying to escape the decline and fall of the decadent galactic empire.
Very educational.

I've heard tell that all of Von Braun and Ley's extravagant plans were destroyed by the invention of the microchip. Huge manned space stations are barely profitable in the weather forecasting and TV transmission business.
But *unmanned* satellites using integrated circuits are an order of magnitude more profitable.

Oh, mastodon mass mind, please come to my aid!
I am looking for a cartoon article from MAD magazine, or at least the issue number. From the mid 1960s or so.
It said that all the young hippies would eventually have children. But since hippies were basically rebelling against stodgy "Establishment" type people, the hippy children would rebelling against their hippy parents, and become stodgy Establishment types.
So the hippies would have to wait for grandchildren. Far-out, man, grand chicks!

Edison Rex is a comic by Chris Roberson & Dennis Culver about a genius criminal science-adventurer - half Doc Savage and half Lex Luthor. After finally defeating the world's greatest superhero, protecting the Earth become's Edison's responsibility. 18 issues of superheroic (née super villainous) comic-book action adventure. Fair warning: it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger for a final arc that never came but it's a recommended read regardless. --Lorc

I was in a gloomy mood. I thought of how AI can generate graphic images on command. Then I remembered a science fiction story called "Blit" by David Langford. It was about a scifi image that would kill anyone who looked at it, by causing the human brain to crash.
Wouldn't it be nasty if an AI was poisoned to randomly emit the deadly image?

I am trying to remember the title of a scifi story.
While traveling FTL, passengers would see an optical illusion of a row composed of multiple images of themselves in an orderly straight line extending off into the horizon.
There were similar lines to the rear, the left, and the right.
Disturbingly some of the images were different. Different clothing, haircuts, etc. And some images were missing, leaving gaps.
Images are from branching timelines. Gaps are time lines where you died

Generally it is difficult to determine if a scifi novel was "inspired" by another scifi series.
Except if a starship defends itself from hostile laser fire by using a "sand caster". Then you *know* it was inspired by the #TTRPG Traveller.

I always liked this cover art. But whenever I saw it, I was reminded of the TTRPG Traveller. Not any other game, just Traveller.
I finally figured out why. The characters are carrying long arms, not pistols. Since basic Traveller does not have laser pistols, players who want to pack a punch are forced to carry rifles.
Other games have blaster pistols and other compact weapons.

I was channel surfing and ran across one of my favorite space movies.
Gee, I wonder why they decided to air this movie right about now...

Star Trek fans may be interested in this story. It is called "Thou Good And Faithful" by John Loxmith (John Brunner) written 1953.
It is about an exploration star ship encountering a planet inhabited by robots. The ship, crew, and story plot are very Star Trek flavored. The officers have "lapel speakers" that are similar to the com-badges used in Star Trek.

I just saw on Turner Classics an old favorite of mine: The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao. An amazing performance by Tony Randall.

Scifi Mastodon, please come to my aid! I am trying to remember the name of a scifi novel.
The protagonist is a teenager boy, whose father is a chief executive at NASA.
A villainous woman is staging a coup to take over the US.
The father wants to get his son to safety. At midnight he takes his son to NASA's electromagnetic launcher, sending him to the small lunar colony.
Ring any bells?
...
It has been answered by https://spacey.space/@npub103c…wfuw . It was ‘Apollo’s Outcasts’ by Allen Steele

I read Awol of Ulm back in the day, in an anthology edited by Isaac Asimov called Before The Golden Age. Half of the colored beams are for combat, with various deadly effects. The others are for defense, neutralizing the combat beams.

I have no idea. Obviously Ukraine is going to use whatever is cost effective. I have heard that Ukraine is training human teams of drone pilots.

Ukraine is advancing military drone technology by leaps and bounds.

You want a location that is as close to the equator as possible.
Secondly you want it on the east coast of a continent with a long stretch of uninhabited ocean.

Is it just me, or does this seem like a real bad idea? Sounds like the start of a "Terminator" movie.

Yes, I know about High Frontier. I helped play test a couple of early versions. It is one of the most scientifically accurate space games ever.

Centrifugal nuclear thermal rocket
This is an old idea, but I am glad someone is looking into it. Specific impulse up to 1,800 sec with hydrogen propellant.

People of Mastodon, please help.
I am trying to remember the name of a short lived TV show in the 1960s-1970s.
There was a mysterious artifact (maybe from aliens, had a Chariots of the Gods feel) which was a metal plate split into six or eight equal parts. Protagonists were looking for all the pieces. They find an elderly native American who has one.
But an evil super villain is trying to obtain all the pieces, to do something evil.
Does this sound familiar?
