I am trying out GoToSocial.
If you miss my posts here on Mastodon et al, you might want to follow me over at @nprofile…wfkq .
Also, I will still be posting long form posts over at @nprofile…08nq .
Also also, I will still be posting videos over at @nprofile…cqsc .
I didn't disappear! <3

I'm taking a break from using Mastodon. The experience here has been less-than-great the past few weeks, and I am tired of this cycle repeating.
In an effort to stay in touch, I've launched a newsletter at veronicaexplains.net. Future blog posts will go there as well.
I explain more in the inaugural post: https://veronicaexplains.net/launching-ghost-on-new-domain/
I have also turned on ActivityPub for this blog, you can follow it at @nprofile…08nq.

I deleted most posts from yesterday. I got some DMs overnight that folks are harassing people from my replies (via DMs).
I'm so sorry.

2026-02-04 03:57:19 UTC

In one day, I've had so many horrible interactions here.
All because I talked about misogyny a little bit?
I'm really let down, all.

2026-02-03 23:15:14 UTC

Here's a fun data fact.
Today around 10am I opted back in to Mastodon's discovery features, and my server immediately went "wowie zowie" (that's a technical term).
It's no slouch of a server, either- a VPS running with two cores and 4GB of RAM. And it's always much slower when I turn those features on.

@nprofile…j9f5 I don't *have* to deal with this. Men can stand up to other men who harass women.
And I know that "blocking is your friend", that's what I said in the damn post, lol

2026-02-03 18:19:06 UTC

I'm talking about all of the misogyny crap today because folks keep speaking for me and saying I'm one of Fedi's big boosters.
It's true, I do prefer this place to corporate driven social media. But I want to be abundantly clear, I don't feel welcome here. Not really.
I get garbage sent my way that would give you therapy bills. And largely, as a quirk of decentralization, most of you won't ever see it.
Fedi is like being gaslit, every time I use it. And I need to flipping say that.

FYI this was in response to me being exhausted, as the amount of men creepily proposing to me continues to grow.
I was tired of being catcalled, I *talked about it*, and was told I was encouraging it.
This is the kind of behavior that drives women off of Fedi and toward closed platforms like Instagram where blocking is (seemingly) easier (and where there's more women).

Everyone loves blaming a victim. "You are encouraging other weird/creepy people" GTFO with that.
I get a few of these EVERY TIME I post about sexism on this website. I'm sick of it- you all are making me want to delete this server and abandon Fedi. I'm totally serious.
This is as bad as sexual harassment.

We've got Bruce doing a Minneapolis song- I feel like maybe Dylan should have said something by now? Did I miss it?

Don't mess with Minneapolis. ❤️

2026-01-22 18:11:25 UTC

Friendly reminder that Mastodon, et al is federated, which means you almost certainly won't see every reply on a thread.
Let's say you're reading a post from "reasonable.domain". And someone from "cesspool.domain" replies to it. If your instance blocked "cesspool.domain", you won't see that reply.
This effect minimizes the appearance of harm. It can be a blessing, but it also means you won't always see the problems inherent on these platforms.

2026-01-22 17:35:07 UTC

Deleted my post about the sexual harassment I'd received on Fedi, because it was driving more sexual harassment toward me.
Y'all want women on Fedi? Fight that shit. I can't do it for you.

This is still up on a major Lemmy instance right now, in a post about my Clonezilla video. So, yeah, Fedi is not immune to this nonsense.
Do better, dudes. If you're a mod and you see this type of behavior, boot people.
And if you can't moderate because of scale, delete your instance or get mods who'll do the damn job.

@nprofile…sftd That's right. There's a whole thing there with SSDs about wear leveling and the rotation of sections where data is stored, it's basically not possible to ensure you're getting all the data even if you shred a thousand times, whereas something like Parted Magic just tells the SSD controller "destroy all data". It's faster too!

2026-01-22 05:06:10 UTC

@nprofile…sftd Many recovery media tools include an SSD-compliant (including NVMe) Secure Erase. I have one from Lenovo that works really well- a client showed that to me as the option their cybersecurity insurance company supported.
I typically pop the drive into the computer, boot the tool from Lenovo's website, and run it. Takes minutes for an NVMe.
For other uses, I've enjoyed the ease of Parted Magic, which has its own Secure Erase feature that seems to work consistently.

I'm not going to talk about Bluesky anymore for a bit, but I know folks are coming back here after hanging out there for a while, and I want to encourage Fedi users not to gloat, not to be jerks about it.
And if you're just (re)joining us on Fedi, like all affinity groups, you're going to run into enthusiasts who are gloating, but I promise most of us are just happy you're here and want to help make this place awesome for you. <3

To be clear, I don't trust Fedi to handle this information with care, either. Difference being that on Fedi, your mods aren't some VC/blockchain-funded corporate entity. They're often enough your friends, your neighbors, or yourself.
While there are certain database-related exploits which can be used to pull a blocklist, often enough that's a challenge for a typical layperson with an axe to grind. And it's an incomplete picture thanks to the quirks of federation. Not so on Bluesky.

2026-01-18 18:27:40 UTC

My comments are littered with folks asking "why is it a problem if your blocklist is public on Bluesky?"
I'm glad you asked.
"Who you block" is a reasonable indicator of your personal alignments. If you block TERFs, you're likely trans-friendly, if not trans yourself. If you block white supremacists, you're likely in support of multiculturalism.
If you block government entities, well, you know how this goes.
Do I trust Bluesky to handle that information with care? Hell no.

2026-01-18 00:05:03 UTC

Aside: this is a *major* reason why I quit Bluesky and deleted my account some months back.
I would block a baddie, and because that crap is PUBLIC on Bluesky (?!?), that basically creates a "hate list" that's easily exploitable. And of course folks were exploiting it!
If you're going to use Bluesky, strongly recommend not blocking folks unless they're specifically harassing you. And don't block big accounts, that crap can come back to haunt you.
I went the other way, and deleted my account.

I don't "make Linux and FOSS work for me." Years ago, I *chose* to work with Linux and FOSS.
I just switched, and if things required Windows or a Mac, I didn't do those things. I did other things instead.
My priorities welcomed that choice. Yours might not. That's OK! But it doesn't mean Linux can't do it.
It'd be like saying "my bicycle can't haul a tractor, therefore bicycles are worthless." You'd sound absurd. That's what they do. Because rage sells.

A problem I have with every "I tried Linux for two weeks and could never make it work" video thing is that folks position themselves as the default, everyday computer user.
But they're not! Jeeze folks! They're already knee deep in Windows/Mac software if they have a YouTube channel where they make videos on Windows/Mac!
These folks have production workflows that they don't want to change. If that's not you, you can disregard their rage-bait!

2025-12-22 16:19:26 UTC

The problem with saying "Linux doesn't work" is that it's incorrect.
Folks are always surprised to hear that I've been doing music, videos, and gaming on Linux for decades.
Biggest thing is that I *only* buy hardware that works on Linux, and I *only* use software that works on Linux.
What you mean when you say "Linux doesn't work" is that "Linux doesn't work for me." But that's not rage-baity enough to attract attention.

2025-12-17 17:44:51 UTC

A lot of folks have asked me if I'm serious about relaunching Mozilla after their inevitable collapse.
What I can say with confidence is that if the brand assets become available, I would absolutely look into purchasing them, in the same manner Perifractic "resurrected" Commodore. I am no millionaire, so this would have to be a community-driven thing.
Imagine: everyday people like us banding together to resurrect our beloved browser. I'd absolutely do my part to spearhead that.

Every social media needs Mastodon's "personal note" feature.
That thing where you can leave a note only-you-can-see about why you followed, or why you muted, or why you blocked a profile.
I use this all the time in Mastodon to explain to future me why I took an action, and it would be great to know that while I'm wasting time remembering why I subscribed to various YouTube channels, or why I blocked various commenters.

@nprofile…dfpj My recommendation if you want to go this route is to take a bit of time and learn containerization. Spending a week or two reading about Docker/Podman/LXC is going to illuminate a lot about these sorts of challenges (and how to overcome them).
Doing them "bare-metal" (not containerized, raw installation) is a hard "no" from me, you almost certainly will run into conflicts. They all usually want to be the only thing on the server.

In other words, here on Fedi, as a hostess of a single-user instance, I literally cannot "censor" you. I'm not in charge of your server. I can't delete your posts or your account.
Best I can do is report what you say, but again, that's up to your mods to decide how to act. Not me!
I *can* choose not to host you, but (say it with me), that's not censorship. That's choice. You don't have to host me, either. It goes both ways!

2025-11-04 16:58:36 UTC

I, a Mastodon user on a single-user instance, cannot *ban you* from your separate instance.
I can (and do!) defederate from you or your instance, which will prevent my single-user server from picking up what you say.
But that's not a *ban*. That's me saying "I don't want to host your content." Assuming your instance doesn't care, you're still free to post it. In no world is that "getting banned!"

2025-11-04 16:53:12 UTC

This morning I got an email from someone saying I "sensored" them on Mastodon, because something they said to me was apparently ban-worthy.
I've seen none of this- my guess is that the user was banned by their instance mods shortly after posting, and before it had a chance to hit my notifications box.
Obviously I appreciate the hard work of mods in doing what they do. And, this would be a good time to remind folks that not everyone here understands how real decentralization works.

There's a thing that happens with educators that you might not know.
Often, an educator will want to learn how to do something, not because they think it's a good idea, but specifically because understanding the thing is a core part of the job.
So when they ask "how do I do _____?" or "how do they do _____?" it isn't endorsement, nor desire. Not necessarily.
This is one of those "nuance" things we keep hearing so much about.

@nprofile…dchl @nprofile…79m6 absolutely agreed. I'd argue "The Measure of a Man" was truly the entire franchise's best episode to that point.
By season 3, they got their sea legs, and the storytelling really started developing. My favorite is season 5, some of my favorite "thought provoking" episodes there!

Honest and sincere idea for Mastodon and other Fedi clients: optional pagination of feeds.
I'd love to be able to specify "show me ten toots and make me click a button to show me the next ten."
The amount could be a variable. But the effect would help the mental health of a lot of folks who use these programs.
Just as an option to counter infinite scroll.

@nprofile…lptk that and sluggishness. My understanding (I'm not a scientist) is that the chip might throttle down if it's running hot- repasting would potentially help with that.

Not for nothing, but your current laptop will likely last a bit longer if you're comfortable opening it up and repasting it.
That and a fan swap can take care of a ton of the issues with keeping older laptops alive.

My video won't be out before the deadline happens, but a common thread in the questions I've been getting is "what distro do you recommend for someone trying to get away from Windows 10?"
My answer is boring: Linux Mint.

I despise corporate-speak so much.

Is there a podman book?
Like, I don't mean a website. A book. You know, the thing that's made of paper that I can set out on my desk?

So for years I've had this milk promotional poster (from who knows when), and every time I look at it I have more questions.

I think that the "Mastodon is hard" vibe comes largely from folks who expect to be able to "find everyone on one app". I think when we tell folks leaving Twitter/Bluesky/Facebook/whatever about the Fediverse, it's important to address this disconnect with honesty and patience.
No, it is not "just like email". Because for 90% of folks email is "just another app".
It's more like webrings.

I've deactivated my Bluesky account.
I haven't exactly been having fun there- today's "CEO inviting transphobia" news doesn't help.
I was there to make connections but honestly it's increasingly just becoming noise. I remain convinced that real decentralization is better (warts and all).

New video! I know rsync is old school but sometimes old school is the right school.

Dudes keep telling me to try Linux on my desktop. Stop telling me that

Idea for the fedi: I would love to be able to see a list of who is tripping filters.
So, like, if I filter out the word "disc burner" it would be nice to have some kind of table which shows me "[user] tripped 'disc burner' filter 10 times". I feel like this would help significantly with the curation of lists, feeds, etc.
I don't think that exists by default- anyone know?

I'm taking a break from posting on here for a while.
If you need to get a hold of me my email is on the website.
